Shadow of darkness for Purdue

Like it or not PU recruits to the culture and system and do well with it. Two best players for PU we’re 3 stars
The culture thing is getting overblown in my opinion. It's easy to talk about culture when you have a dominant player that is a 1 of 1 and a matchup nightmare. Every guy on their roster was better because of Zach. Let's see how they do without him.

Imagine, for two seasons, IU starting every offensive possession with the defense in rotation.

They were a fluke free throw miss from going to the final 4 a few years ago with Kline and Edwards

UConn had a great game plan, take away the 3 and guard Exeybine on one and let him have a tough 30+
IU did this with TJD and swept PU by 13 combined points. Its always been the way to beat this PU team the last couple of years. Go man-to-man on Edey, try to push him out as far from the basket as you can, let him get his points but be physical with him. His range eventually gets shorter and shorter as he wears down. But if you put more of a focus trying to lock down the rest of PU, which isn't that difficult when you're not doubling down on Edey, their flaws are highlighted.

Edey gives them consistency which is the hardest thing to obtain in college bball. He is guaranteed to get his and get his at a high percentage but as you saw with UConn, the highest level of guard play always wins in the end.

Compared to the rest of the BT, its pretty good! IU has what? You got to remember Purdue has owned the BT in recent years, return the majority with some really good athletes coming in! Purdue is going to be top 3! Woody Wood Pecker retiring soon!
Purdue has owned the Big10 in recent years for one primary reason. A low rated recruit turned into a monster recruit. Put him on any other team in the conference and that team would have dominated. The narrative that Painter has created a masterpiece program is highly overrated. Edey is a once in a lifetime college bball player.

Was Carson Edwards also?

CBS has Purdue at the top of BT next year, they actually listed IU at 11th! You should be proud!
Lose in the National Championship... run to the IU board to talk about CBS BT projections for next season..... you can't make this stuff up.

Have you heard of Kanon catchings just saying painter recruiting has got better over time and big dog son Harris is plenty good he coming

Again, you are projecting based on a past that does not exist today. NIL and transfer portal is changing college sports significantly.

Understood. I probably am understating that.

But...even so. PU is in fine shape. lol We however are not.

Big Ten champs 4 of the last 8 seasons. National runner up, one second away from final four. This is since 2017. We can agree to disagree about the success of Painter’s culture, but nobody at Purdue is looking to see who’s available to coach our team after next season.

Yesterday Purdue was in better shape, but today we are in better shape.
PU returns 5 of top 7 in rotation and we have a roster of 5 guys from a team that was below .500 in conference play. Iu is not in PU class right now.

Bad timing. Having your all time best team run up against a historically good UCONN team is unfortunate.

Happy to see Edey gone. What a monster of a player.

But, Purdue will slide to the bottom of the league and we can stop hearing about their culture.
First, Edy was a beast and he got calls. Without that Purdue was a decent to above average team, like usual. Second, Purdue had one of the easiest paths to the championship game in recent memory. But they got exposed by a true great team. Third, they will continue to be a good team as long as painter is there because they have a system where they keep players multiple years and dont use the transfer portal (ie, they have continuity). But, it will be tough to get back to the finals. Lets not forget Butler went there two years in a row not too long ago. Where are they now?

They won last year in 2022-23 and IU swept them and IU has been crap under Grandpa.
They rode the most dominant player in college basketball as far as they could. That part is not likely to happen again for them anytime soon. Since they won’t replicate that exact model, they have to up the level of the supporting cast. Those guys on Purdue were not at the level of the overall supporting cast at UCONN.

I don't really agree with that at all. Without Edey, Purdue is awful. His presence made everyone better. Just my opinion.

I think more likely than not PU and Painter maintain their grip on the BT and continue getting high seeds.

To say this was their one shot, given Painter's age and trajectory, is presumptuous.

PU will be good every year, great some.
pu always good, never great!
