Please explain to me how Purdue losing is good for IU

Very good post. I think the responses posted to date show the true character of IU fans that post on this board. That should be tempered, however, because it is the same with all boards like this. People can come on the board virtually anonymously and spew stuff they would in public. ALL boards are the same. If you look at the total fan base people that post this sht on this and other boards are a very small minority. For me, I cheer for all Big schools all the time. I think the Big places the proper balance on academics and sports. For me, I remember the great rivalry with Bobby and Gene when both schools were ranked high and the press coverage was unbelievable for their games.

Thank you for the kind reply.
It seems the question I posed has, unfortunately, only elicited diatribes and vitriol without any cogent reply.

Good grief, you post a silly question but you expect cogent replies?
Let me give you a cogent reply.

Do you live in Indiana? Do you live in a PU area?

If you answered no to either then we have no basis for a discussion.

First off, please link the posts that state our success is based on their failure. They are virtually no part of our success but they could be part of our failure. We have to recruit against them and granted, it has been a while since they got a recruit we wanted but the fact still remains.

I grew up in a PU area and it is still a PU area. And even with those facts, I had NO animosity against them when I went to IU. BUT as I talked to people in this area when I was a student, SO MANY people dismissed IU as a school and I got reactions inferring that I took second place, that I couldn't get into PU. Once is an anomaly, but several times is a trend and I came to despise PU and their fans and STILL do. So it was PU fans and PU people in my extended family that turned me into --- I have two favorite teams, IU and WHOEVER plays PU. And it will be that way until the day I die.

Is that cogent enough for you?

Actually, not in the least.
Help me understand how the answer to my question relies on the state in which I'm living when it is posed?

So again, how does Purdue's failure help IU?

And realistically, would you actually any Indiana kid that visits W. Lafayette and Bloomington and then chooses PU? I certainly would not.

West Laffy is concrete, ugly, and smells.
Bloomington is beautiful, hip, and has hot women.

PU sucks, and I have no control over that.

I get tired of seeing the posts berating PU and wishing they get blown out by anyone and everyone.
As an IU fan, I hope for the exact opposite. The higher ranked they are, the better our defeating them means in the tourney seeding (and if we were to lose, the less harm it can have).
Frankly I'd much rather beat them, or anyone else, when they are ranked #1 than as some also ran.
Can someone please explain their logic? Our success is not determined their failure, quite the opposite is true.

It's hard to take anyone seriously who can't figure out how to use the quote function. Coloring your comment differently inside someone else's comment makes me want to dismiss you outright.

See what I mean?

It really isn't the PU team or coaches People enjoy watching lose, hell, a lot if those players would have killed to wear the stripes and they work as hard as anyone else.

For most it is a reflection of their grad base whose inferiority complexes and embittered obsession with all things IU makes them worthy of all disrespect they get. Go read a bit on GBI...it helps with context.

Most people here know that my career is in agriculture. I accept the fact that Purdue is an excellent resource for me. Most all training seminars I attend are at Purdue or have a strong Purdue influence. Never do I attend one where there isn't an off color remark about IU. My question is does this happen in reverse? My thinking is no. I have never had any high regard for their athletics, except Stephanie White. Lately, my disdain for them has turned to irrelevance. Maybe I'm getting old and realize not to waste my time left worrying about them is in my best interest.

Do you honestly believe Purdue fans don’t get that 10 fold? Try wearing Purdue apparel in southern Indiana and see if you don’t get condescending remarks totally unsolicited from people you don’t even know, or are just casual acquaintances. And many of the casual acquaintances are likely to have attended Franklin, Hanover, Ball State, or no college at all, but feel compelled to let you know they’re IU fans and have to insult All things Purdue.

Just in SOUTHERN Indiana? I would be disappointed.

This question sounds like one posed to Mr. Obvious on Bob And Tom years ago. Well caller, who is your favorite team and who is their in-state rival?

Like IU and all BIG schools, PU is a very good academic institution particularly in agriculture and many engineering disciplines. In fact I sent my own kid there for a specific program they excel in.

It was odd though they have a freshman orientation week they call boiler gold rush whichnisnquite organized with activities. I learned that the embittered hatred for and obsession with IU starts early. There were signs, stories, jokes and even activities that include a heavy dose of Anti IU rhetoric. Weird.

The rivalry is driven 75% by PU grads. IU fans have many other interests.

Boyfriend? Really? Talk about sloppy. You have a lot more license on here than me so I'll just say haha.
On a serious note, Dakich said something about Terry Hutcheuns involved in a car accident. If I heard this correctly, then thoughts and prayers. Hoping for full recovery.

This thread has the worst OP in the history of this board (That is saying something) followed by mostly greatness.

Serious medical issue on top of the car accident.

Well, here's a post from Gold and Black that I just copied telling us all what the Boiler Faithful, Semi-Faithful, Sorta-faithful, Hardly-faithful, Barely-faithful think of their current team by predicting before Jan.1 what it will do next year:

"My big thing is looking at next year. Who are the likely starters?

Nojel
Hunter
Newman
Wheeler
Haarms

Sorry, but that squad can’t win you 20 games...it just can’t. There is even less jumpshot consistency from that group than there is right now. CMP could be looking at back to back years of missing the NCAA tourney and that should never happen here barring injuries."

There are also numerous posts directly attacking Matt Painter. These negative posts seem
premature so early in the season.

Despite the premature abandonment of Purdue's own team, the fans go out of their way to yell, "IU Sucks!"

POTFB times a bizillion.

I interact daily with a building full of PU graduates, with ugly black and gold everywhere, Glenn Robinson and PU Mascot Pete bobbleheads, and giant PU football and basketball calendars hung in almost every cubicle. After the Bucket win I had black streamers greeting me at work on Monday in my office.
I feel for you, Outnumbered Man. Where do you work...what engineering firm? Farm Bureau Coop in Lebanon, maybe? I hope you have our five banners strategically placed above your office door. Maybe that's what keeps your boss so irritable. I'd have a case of Miller in the trunk of my car, ready to hand out in the parking lot when we play them in roundball. Take down the clowns!

Purdue losing means they get less good recruits, and less competition for IU for the same recruits. I hope PU signs Painter to a lifetime contract.

Well he's currently on his 14th season and is signed though 2024. That's essentially a lifetime with regards to a coaching career.

Not sure who is out there that could get better results than Painter has at Purdue.

They're lucky to have him.

I think you're mixing two things. It's more exciting to beat Purdue when both teams are good, and while there are no good losses, a loss to a good team is more understandable than a loss to a bad team. However, a putrid Purdue only increases IU's recruiting potential in the state and thus potential overall. For recruiting, marketing, sales, and exposure, it's better to be the clear leader in the state that one of in the state.

With exception of the Sampson situation that created the Hummel Boilers, IU hasn't lost many recruits to PU regardless of good or bad.

And yet has won at least 26 games the last 3 seasons. He must be a helluva coach since he can't recruit. Yes, that streak is over. IU has won 26 twice in the last 20 seasons. Take heart. IU is better this season. Our teams seem headed in opposite directions. I have to give them credit. They've won close games this season. Morgan will be first team All Big. Just hope we can get you in Mackey.

Any IU fan who has to spend any time around PUkes who might be relatives or co-workers understands. The fan base is obnoxious and obsessed with IU failure. The fact that they have an organized chant of "IU Sucks" at every home event in every sport says it all.

POTFB
I love watching games at Mackey on TV, when an opposing player takes an extra step. Half the crowd stands up and spins their hands/wrists/arms in air, making the 'traveling' call. They all have lil' bro chips on their shoulders.

The "purdue howl" is legendary when the broilee fans disagree with a call. broilees are hands down the whiniest fan base in college basketball.

PU isn't able to get a coach better than Painter, not that he is an elite coach or anything. Plus, it's PU, it's PU. There are issues at the program and coaching levels, but the program issues are the bigger problem. They named their court after a coach that never made it to the Final Four. Painter is basically Gene Keady, and that is probably all PU can hope for.

The state's elite recruits won't give PU the time of day, and they can barely get recruits out of their own backyard, anymore. Phinisee rejecting PU for IU says a lot.

MP has always been able to get kids that fit his system and play hard. My comment was in the context if the head to head recruiting discussion.
