Not crazy about the packline defense...as it is intended. You will win games but not championships. You have to be able to guard the 3 and defend passing lanes. We do neither.

This style takes more speed and effort, but that is what travels and wins championships.

If you can't pressure the other team for turnovers and guard the 3, you will continually loose to a hot under-rated team over and over. This is how good teams get tossed from the tournament.

It is nice to see them playing some form of team defense for a change, but still have miles and miles to go to be descent on defense.

It's better tonight. They have extended it out and aren't over helping as much. They are more aware of shooters and no fly by close outs. Much much sharper.

They were exposed last game mentally and physically. I hope learned a little something.

They have more intensity, but it's mainly better because of who they're playing.

Ft Wayne would be shredding it tonight too.

They are giving up 3's because they aren't quite sure when to help and when to get back....plus we don't have the length or athleticism to quite recover as much as needed. It'll look better as time goes on with more familiarity and better recruits....though it is designed more to take away the post and the drive than the 3.....but it is supposed to only give up contested 3's. Don't judge it on a team that has played it for just a couple months and isn't as athletic as it needs to be.....

Has anybody here bothered to research Dayton's 3Pt FG% allowed while Miller was there? Last year, it was 32%. Anybody bothered to research similar stats for Wisconsin or Virginia? Despite the unsurprising ignorance of the pack line defense displayed on this board, some of the best defensive teams in the country utilize it. Teams that execute this defense properly do not give up three-pointers at a high percentage.

Crean was given all kinds of time to rebuild - then given extra time because of a couple Sweet 16’s - even though he ran a system that over 17 years of coaching was consistently performing poorly in all the important areas (turnovers, defensive efficiency).

Archie inherited a team with poor guard play, no senior leadership that has had little emphasis on defensive fundamentals, yet is supposed to work miracles overnight.

Do any of you complainers have an inkling of what the word “patience” means? Geeez . . .

The pack line is designed to swarm the post, but teams like Dayton, Virginia, and Arizona don’t exactly struggle to defend the three-point shot. It’s not designed to just give up open threes. We are just not a good defensive team. Our players have no idea how to play team defense.

Yep. It’s kind of mind-boggling to see so many people talk about it as if it’s some amazingly foreign concept. Someone on the premium board asked if it was a 1-2-2 zone.

Hard to believe some people apparently expected this team to play great or even good defense after the defensive effort we saw under the last coach. There is an idiot on the Scout Ohio State who says Archie is trash and he is happy they didn't get him. This after one month. It takes time folks. It will get much better when Archie gets his players.

Our guys have been inconsistent in running the scheme. That doesn't mean the scheme fails. Wisconsin made the championship game a few years ago with it. You can win a championship with it, you've just got to executed it a lot better than we have been, generally. Archie needs time to implement all the fundamentals in a way that the guys are reacting instead of thinking--and he needs time to drill some bad habits out of the team, either through attrition or improvement.

I appreciate those who have coached or played before giving some thoughtful answers.
