Our Former PresidentsNeed to Act

So, i think this thread is proof that we read posts “from the other side” with the intent to find a way to characterize them (and the poster) as containing evil intent and being made in bad faith.
I was taught (in the IU philosophy dept) to read with a spirit of generosity and curiousity. I recommend it highly.

In part, yes. Plus, Trump is still eligible to run. He’s a candidate, not a former President. And he is intentionally part of the problem. He is not a person of good will. He lives to insult and counterpunch. He is Maxine Waters with a penis.

Speaking of women who wish they had a penis..............

Yes, it was conciliatory instead of inflammatory. It was also a bipartisan proposal, and those are rare. So kudos to him for that.

Here's the thing, though. Trump has more influence than the other former presidents combined. If he made a statement simply saying that he expects to be fully exonerated (one of his favorite words) while asking people to tone down the dangerous anti-feds/anti-law enforcement rhetoric and be civil - - - and if he followed through himself - - the country would be in a much better place. He needs to stop the reckless and false claims like Biden knew of the search in advance, the FBI planted evidence at Mar-A-Lago, and that the feds let Obama off the hook for taking millions of government documents to Chicago at the end of his presidency. (“President Barack Hussein Obama kept 33 million pages of documents, much of them classified. How many of them pertained to nuclear? Word is, lots!” - DJT).

Once again, he's fanning the flames and somebody's going to get hurt.
I agree 100%.

Trump is not just fanning an existing fire caused by someone/something else -- he is personally stacking the fuel, soaking it with accelerant and lighting the match to start the fire in the first place.

Remember, Trump (not the FBI) publicized the fact that the Mar-a-Lago search had even occurred, using intentionally inflammatory language. He enhanced all that followed.

Every day afterward, he comes up with some new defense/excuse that he hadn't mentioned earlier (like attorney client privilege, even though his attorney was present in the area and communicated with the FBI on the day of the search as they took the same boxes).

Each day, he loudly publicizes his new excuses with brand new inflammatory language which further serves to generate a new batch of Republican robo-comments attacking Garland, the DOJ and the FBI.

Who publicized the names of the FBI agents who were involved? -- Trump.

Why are people riled up? -- Trump.

I'm gonna guess that with you having the hammer everybody who wants to be on the Cooler is a Persuadable. ;)

I'm all for some heat and rancor. Too much civility gets boring. It's the juvenile taunting and food fights that get my attention.

I think most of the people you're referring to have, in some way, shape, or form called "Americans" and our leaders to task in recent years. Some of them more directly pointedly at Trump/Trumpism, others just the general political climate. Each and every time, it starts very loud backlash, support, arguments, etc...

I would imagine most of them just don't know what to say or do at this point.

And one of the main reasons Trump even "exists" is because Trump supporters believe the leaders you mentioned basically ignored, even crapped on them, for years. So they aren't going to convince many of the Trump Republicans of much of anything.

I think we need someone like DeSantis to rise from Trumpsewer, and slowly distance himself from the BS. Trump, as a viable political leader, wasn't created overnight. And "he" won't be destroyed over night. Even if he is charged and convicted with whatever crimes might have happened...he'll still hold power over millions of voters. Maybe even more power!

Someone that holds a lot of Trumps policy beliefs, that can relate to Trump followers, needs to ascend to power in the Republican party...and needs to navigate everything back closer to sane, good conservative values.

And I'd say the exact same thing for the Democratic party. Biden/Harris aren't the answer. Find someone that is. A good Governor somewhere. A Senator that has fought for progressive ideals, without completely flipping off people they know don't agree with them.

DeSantis vs Klobuchar??? I don't know. First thought at a Presidential race that would be 100,000,000 times better than Trump V Biden II, or Trump v Harris.

The call for civility that the former Presidents were supposed to make. That's what MTIOTF was proposing.
MTIOTF admits he's just trolling us, but he trolls a bit too harshly to attract a lot of supporters to his idea. He'd have more success if he tried to be just a Smurf.

Ah. Here we go.

A post in the spirit of defusing the animosity. (Yeah, right).

I'd take a long hard look at a Condi Rice candidacy. She's about the right age . . . and has the right demeanor.

Maybe Rice vs. Sherrod Brown?

Shroom doesn't believe in that. He came of age in the Newt Gingrich school of politics.

S'ok. He can cancel out others from the opposing side.

Trump is different, though, different from any other American politician, different in his campaign style and different in the fact that he attracts blind, absolute loyalists.

DeSantis needs to develop a more statesman-like persona to appeal to the few remaining middle-of-the-road voters. He likely won't beat Trump. Until he masters that, here's what he looks like every time he sneers and makes some insult to the democrats:

Mr-Collins-pride-and-prejudice-1995-6171521-150-200.jpg

DeSantis really doesn't look genuine when he smiles or sneers.

No Thanks. Very pleasant person, but she was clueless about the OBL threat prior to 911. A disqualifying offense imo.

Sneering at Democrats is the primary political game du jour . . . without it, no self-respecting GOP candidate could win.

That's the problem.

I don't like a lot of the stuff DeSantis jumped on board with recently...but his record Pre Trump is much more palatable.

That ticket you mentioned would be amazing!!! Man...man...so much better. But I'd worry that Condi Rice would be too big of a departure from Trump...his supporters wouldn't accept her the same way they would DeSantis.

And I'm one that thinks once he had the full power of the Oval Office, DeSantis would drift away from Trump, and would probably be a decent President.

If I knew people would rally around Rice, man that'd be an awesome, and refreshing race in 24'.

And that's not even touching on Sherrod Brown, who I think would do a fine job as well.

***edited after reading/remembering their ages. Not ideal, but as was responded, better than Trump/Biden/Harris...

Thanks . . . but it's not like either of them is clamoring to be president. Maybe that's what we need . . . an overwhelming draft ______ campaign. Get rid of the egos who think they want to put up with the crap that goes with being president . . . find folks who know what's involved and have just enough ego to not say no to a draft . . . .

At this point I'd take a Rice/Sherrod Brown ticket. Show the rest of the geezers running . . . .
My dream match up, which has no chance of happening, would be Ben Sasse vs. Chris Murphy. Both are young and smart. Sasse is an old school conservative and constitutionalist in the George Will mold. As a Democrat, I would vote for him just to keep democracy on track. Murphy is a sincere, common sense liberal to moderate senator. With that said, neither would be able to raise enough money to have an exploratory lunch meeting.

Just no to Trump and Hillary. Neither should run.

And Bernie. They're all too old. Hillary's 8 months younger than Trump . . . who is 5 years younger than Bernie.

Aside from the other negatives . . . .

DeSantis would kick ass, but he does need to get around Trump first. He may not be up for it.

You forgot Joe. He needs to call it a career too. If both parties do nominate these people, it may be the first time voters really take a hard look at their running mates, because we could see the top of the ticket on both sides not make it through the rigors of the campaign.

Or a third party could qualify and run one or the other party - or both - out of business. Yang and Whitman? The Forward party?

Gotta get a new name . . . that's bad.

Having read all these post and ideas I am starting to think about running for congress myself. At 88 I would fit right in with most of these old farts and am just starting to reach my prime. These guys make all kinds of promises, sit on their butts most of the time doing very little except point fingers, and then take a few weeks off. I am damn good at every one of those things and in fact excel in two of them.

I think I'm on to something.

I think a Grassley/Shelby vs. Feinstein/Waters would be awesome. Whichever pair lives to election day, wins!

You should look up the pensiom and other benefits for ex-members of Congress..

88? That would work for age and/or IQ.
