Currently reading: Justinian's Flea. It promised a fascinating premise. Why, at the end of antiquity, it asked, did the Roman Empire collapse, while the Chinese and Arabian cultures flourished and became ascendant? Well, it suggested, right at Rome's apex of revitalization, Justinian's plague happened, and that pandemic just happened to spare Arabia and China.

I'm halfway through the book, and I've seen nothing to justify or even address the thesis. So far, it's just been 250 pages on the end of the Roman empire. Which is fascinating enough, but I'd like to see some of those dots set out in the prologue start to get connected.

That would seem to be a good reason.

So what Christmas movies did you all watch? Spirited was pretty good. Watched a couple dumb ones, White Christmas, and It’s a Wonderful Life. And the Christmas episodes of The Office is our Christmas Eve tradition.

We watched Lemon Drop Kid and liked it. I wish we had signed up for Apple again to watch the Ted Lasso Christmas.

Spirited, Christmas Vacation, Elf, Die Hard, 8 bit Christmas, Home Alone, and more I'm forgetting.

Also started the HBO show Barry. It is really good.

Just watched My Cousin Vinnie tonight and my daughter loved it so much I think she's now thinking of becoming a lawyer, which means I will have failed as a parent.

Ha. I love Barry. There’s one really dumb episode where he fights a karate guy; it’s so ridiculous it’s hilarious. Good stuff

We just finished Wednesday, I loved it. The actress playing Wednesday was great. The weakest spot was not the show's fault, no one alive could play Gomez and Morticia like Astin and Jones.

I think Gomez was really miscast. He’s supposed to be suave and debonair. Wednesday actress was amazing.

And does your daughter know the Wednesday dance, I’d guess? I was teaching my 9 year old niece.

Just saw Glass Onion: a Knives Out Mystery with the family. We all really enjoyed it.

Good screenplay, and I liked the ensemble cast--like the first one, kinda star-studded and everyone is having fun.

I hope they keep making them every few years.

Meh, watched it this weekend and it was ok, but not as good as the first one. Worth a watch but I’d give it a 6/6.5

Surprisingly good watch. Gets better as the series progresses. But like anything with Sly, I suggest you use the subtitles.
I like it. Not great but entertaining. A benefit of being single is now I watch what I want. So instead of Emily in Paris last night I watched the ric flair documentary. It was okay. Not great. But the one guy in it had a fantastic quote:

“Ric Flair lives like Ric Flair every day of the year”

We just finished watching "Human Performance" on Netflix. It's about the games people play...odd sports of competition played around the world. In addition to some quirky competitions steeped in tradition, it displays beautiful photography that was 5 years in the making.

Just finished Stephen King’s newest , Fairy Tale. It’s more back to his fantasy roots than he has been writing lately. Really enjoyed it.

Oh? Didn't know you did the deed. Good for you! Explains some of the aggro in the recent past! ;)

Favorite Book Read of 2022: Lonesome Dove (even though I'm not particularly fond of McMurtry's concept of women in this book. The writer, not the poster)

Favorite Movie of 2022: The Northman

It's still a really good read. Augustus McCrae has entered the pantheon of all time favorite book characters. At least now I can finally watch the mini series.

I enjoyed the Kennedy Center Awards. I missed those . Of course George Clooney was the best, but U2, Gladys Knight, Amy Grant, and Tania Leon.

I’ve read Lonesome Dove twice in the last 30 years and listened to it on audiobook once a few years ago. It’s excellent.

Gladys Knight was the best . . . Clooney was just the longest . . . U2 was meh. The one that surprised me the most was Tania Leon . . . I said to MrsSope "we're getting cultured" . . .

. . . Vince Gill did everything he could to hide and not steal Amy's night . . . .
