Movies, books, tv

@zeke4ahs watch the first season of how to with john wilson on hbo. great stuff. there's a scene where he is looking the wrong way at an mtv concert that's hilarious. you'll get a kick out of the show.

Yep, I’ve read several of his books (but not recently), and it was one that I really enjoyed.

similar formula to many of his books. Narration starts in modern times (this case the 60s?), and then they go back in time to uncover the history of a region. Usually the people that are doing this uncovering are descendants of families that have long ties to the region. In this case it’s about a tell, and the layers that are uncovered revealing the rich history of the region.

I highly recommend it. It may be my favorite one of his books.
That was his first book and he actually wrote it...his later stuff was more like a team project.

Interesting video that is related to the US Army talk:

I am about 15-20 minutes in, so far I love it.

I just passed a comment that Lawrence believed one had to cross the street, get to know the people, fit in and see from their point of view.

That struck me, a month ago I finished Vietnam by Max Hastings. The book is excellent and it skewers the left, the right, the military, the press, the politicians.

One of his early observations at American failings came when we sent advisors that spoke no Vietnamese. When the Vietnamese we worked with seemed aghast at that, our reply was "that's ok, they speak French and almost everyone in Vietnam speaks French".

The French had been very cruel imperialists, and speaking French was really, really, considered poorly by the people of Vietnam (though some in power spoke it). These early Americans going over and visiting hamlet's speaking French was a terrible idea, it immediately drove a wedge between the people in the countryside and the US. The urban Vietnamese tended toward Catholic and spoke French, the rural were Buddhists and viewed anyone speaking French as an outsider.

But we did it. We didn't pay attention evidently to Lawrence about crossing the street.

When you thought it couldn't get worse. Peacock, what are you doing? She might be the most hated woman in America.

Hey Lars, I watched the NetFlix version of "All Quiet on the Western Front", it was good but still think the 1930 version with Lew Ayres I think was superior. I just didn't like the actors as well in the new version or the changes to the script. What did you think after watching the new version?

Have not watched it yet. Wife hates war movies so I have to find the time on my own, which means I have to find some time to myself. So give me ten years.

I keed.

I really loved the book. I'll get back to you

Sounds good. I wouldn't have known to watch the new version but for your post. The cinematography was really great.

Just saw Glass Onion: a Knives Out Mystery with the family. We all really enjoyed it.

Good screenplay, and I liked the ensemble cast--like the first one, kinda star-studded and everyone is having fun.

I hope they keep making them every few years.

I’m going this weekend. I saw Spielberg’s The Fableman’s last weekend and enjoyed it.

Posted without opinion.

Apparently based on a real events. Of course it's Kentucky

What's interesting is who the director was.

Elizabeth Banks. Tri-Delt and sexy board game (UnVeiled) inventor and now movie director!

Just watched 3:10 to Yuma -- the original and the remake.
This is one occasion where the re-make was so much better (eg Seven Samurais v Magnificant Sevens, not so.)

versus

The remake had a lot more depth. Or am I missing the context & nuances of the 50s?

Yellowstone has gotten really awful. Is there even a plot anymore other than Beth running around being mentally and physically abusive to people?

The entire show feels like an hour long infomercial, cash grab for the Taylor Sheridan universe.

I did notice that this season they replaced a lot of the barrel racing scenes with lassoing scenes. That’s some creative genius right there, keeps the people coming back.

Just listened to the Rewatchables pod on The Verdict. What a great movie. Need to go back and rewatch with my kids.

Casting what-ifs: at one point, Burt Lancaster was tied to the James Mason role. Sinatra wanted he lead and said he'd do it for free. Redford was on the project before Newman but wanted to change a bunch of stuff and the producers got rid of him.

Top 5 courtroom movies: The Verdict, A Few Good Men, 12 Angry Men, My Cousin Vinny, Anatomy of a Murder.

Breaker Morant is a sleeper pick (set in the Bohr War). I also love the Rainmaker. Others people love?

The verdict is my favorite legal movie and one of my all time favorite movies. For as old as it is it’s pretty darn realistic. Paul Newman is the best

Breaker Morant is a great film that most haven't heard of.

I have always had a soft spot for The Caine Mutiny.

James Mason is the hidden gem in this movie. His performance is just perfect as the elder lion of the white-shoe law firm:

A Civil Action is my favorite legal book ever. The book drags the movie into the top 5 for me. Loved the way Robert Duvall played Facher and Travolta’s portrayal of Schlichtman.

Another good one is the movie about the OJ Simpson trial where Travolta played Schapero.

The Music Box, a story about the trial of a Nazi is good mostly because a real federal judge played the judge in the movie and he was very realistic.

Concur with your list.

A civil action is in my top five. Actually number 2. It’s a good book too.

@Marvin the Martian so I told you my library has a poster up for “old school d & d” on wed. Well they have “regular” d & d on another scheduled date. My office is right down the street so I walked down there to get a look at the people playing old school. There were 8. I took a picture of them. I won’t post it. Then I went back to see the regular day of d and d. And I took a pic again.

Marv. It was the exact same 8 people.

Does not surprise me at all. D&D's biggest change, women play now. We had two in our college group, both pretty attractive though one was a bit crazy. Now at places like Gencon the number of women playing are maybe 40%.

A Time to Kill belongs on the list.

We NEED that pic.

Finally watched The Last Duel tonight. Was pretty impressed, but I felt like Jacques' version of the story was a little too rapey. I'm not saying they should have made it obviously an affair, but they could have done with some small things that made it at least more ambiguous in his favor. Instead, a story that should have been about unreliable narrators ended up being about justice for a wronged woman. And I'm all about wronged women getting justice, but I think it was a disservice to the story to make it so clear that Margeurite was the one telling the truth.
