Movies, books, tv

I read it in my 20s. So there’s that
You were busy and probably b/c nobody assigned it to you. Goat's dad assigned him reading. I waited until a teacher told me and I had zero idea who James Michenor was.

My dad was more of Clive Cussler guy. I wish they made more movies like Sahara. Matty McConnoHAY is the living embodiment of Dirk Pitt. Excellent casting.

Never read Michenor. If I only read one of his books, which one should it be?

Pick out one that is set in a locale that interests you. I think they are all good. And educational also. I like Centennial because that’s where I live. I also really liked Alaska.

I remember a friend I suggested Hawaii to skipped the first 100 pages because he spent so much time and the animals and fauna. She may have exaggerated, Not sure which is my favorite.

While we are on the topic of reading, any current authors to recommend? I feel like so many we cite are from "back in the day." I haven't read much at all in the last decade plus but would like to get back into it. Who are good current authors? Fiction.

Dennis Lehane.

You like mysteries? Tons of good mystery writers out there. Lee Child, Dennis Lehane, Michael Conelly, Jonathon Kellerman, Harlan Coben Tana French. Stephen King has had some really good ones lately, ( not fantasy), Billy Sommers my most recent favorite. Frederic Bachman is consistently good, of his Beartown is my favorite. I like most of Dave Eggers’ stuff . David Balducci, Ken Follett.

Oh dear. Same. So much the same. I saw him speak once and he’s great in person. Visited his workshop in San Francisco.

James chandler has a series of books about a Wyoming lawyer who has issues with war related PTSD. Good writing and the court and lawyer stuff is pretty accurate even if the plots are kinda far-fetched.

Oh that's really cool. It's his publishing house? McSweeneys?
Yes and he has a workshop for kids where they help them with creative writing. It was one of my favorite things to teach. That and helping kids find books they enjoyed reading. I’d spend forever trying to come up with stuff for non readers. Like Smiley too…so you like kind of quirky sense of humor…no surprise there.

I do like quirky humor. Without question the funniest short story I've ever read was Holidays on Ice

John Irving? His older stuff is best. There’s another one on the tip of my tongue. I’ll have to think

I give that to people for Christmas all the time. I love listening to Sedaris read it himself. He’s hilarious. His last couple ones have been sad too though.

Authors who are still alive and writing:

For more pop/fun reads

Alan Furst--series of historical fiction set in the build up to WW II (The World at Night was one of my favorites)

City of Thieves by David Benioff

I'm guessing Game of Thrones books are great, but I haven't read them

For more literary tastes:

Gilead by Marilynne Robinson

Julian Barnes (anything, but I really like History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters and Sense of an Ending)

Anything by Kazuo Ishiguro (I like Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go the best)

All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr (plot is meh, but the writing and imagery on a sentence-by-sentence level is some of the best around)

Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead (I'm still not sure he pulled off the plotting and its trick, but his imagery of the various states and their versions of race relations were really interesting).

A strongly opinionated recommendation: never read Goldfinch. It is awful.

"One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories"...by B. J. Novak

"A Confederacy of Dunces"
The funniest book I've read recently was the Flashman book. But it was written in 1969.

I generally need to see or hear something to laugh. Reading it doesn't do it for me. I usually end up just smiling and thinking "O.K. I see what you did there. Clever."

A Man Called Ove fit that bill. It was also heartbreaking.

Just saw a trailer for the Tom Hanks movie version of Ove.

I've never read it but will. Bulk and I love a confederacy of dunces. the letter that ignatious writes to an angry customer on behalf of the levy pants company is one i cite almost daily and one of the finest letters i've ever read. as i read horrible complaint emails from customers it's all that i can do to reply with: please limit all future correspondence to orders only

I liked Goldfinch but liked Secret History better.

COH know you like mysteries, have you read Lisa Gardner or Kate Burkholder? I like both a lot. Burkholder’s mysteries are set in Amish area, which is interesting to me. Our lake place is right in the midst of northern Indiana Amish. Oops Burkholder is the main character author is Linda Castellano. ,

Thanks. I’ll check them out.
