Michael Jordan on if 90’s Bulls could beat LeBron’s Lakers

well said. It explains how you can pull a philosopher from a coffee shop and drop him in the middle of a field and he’ll take it over.

This has become a nice little thread

The cult of Kobe has to stop. He was incredible, but I saw him up close for two decades and I don't think he's a Top 5 player.

People love to disrespect Lebron, but he's really remarkable.

Lebron is top 5 all time for sure... I might even put him top 3 behind MJ and Kareem, with a strong case that he might be #2.

Kobe is an all time great, but he's right on the cuff of the top 10. I could make arguments for him being just on the outside of top 10, but he's hovering around there, IMO.

Actually, we should be asking these questions of Marv about another sport near and dear to his heart.

Does today's training and development lead to these people:

being better at D&D than these guys?

The obvious answer: **** no.
While the neck beard in the OG photo is impressive, he'd really struggle to stand out in today's modern game.

And I'm really disappointed in this board that no one has noted the key difference between these modern photos and the OG ones. It's the reason why D&D has pop culture cred now (no, Marvin, it's not because of MAGIC: THE GATHERING 🤣 ).

The equipment was much worse, though. That said, I do agree that 1965 Jack wouldn't get close to 2000 Tiger with the same equipment. That's the nature of athletics.

1965 Masters…6980 yards
1997 Masters…6925 yards

Lebron brings the disrespect onto himself. His ego vastly exceeded Jordan’s or Kobe’s or Kareem’s or Magic’s. He’s the most arrogant athlete on the planet. I defended him when he was a kid and said stupid things but now that he’s older and knows better - there’s no excuse anymore.

He’s also the first superstar NBA Player to flop and whine to the refs to the degree he does. Super unlikable guy. But agreed the talent is tremendous.

The other thing I’ll say to discount him is that there have been - in his career - very few players that had the physical ability to defend him. His size and athleticism let him play a different game than all the others. It’s also why I can’t put Kareem at the top - he was virtually unguardable. He’d be smothered in today’s game.

Hard disagree about the ego thing. Jordan and Kobe both have/had utterly massive egos. And both whined like crazy when they felt a call didn't go their way. Seems like maybe some recency bias there.

I do agree that Lebron's size and speed combination is what makes him unique. And in comparison to Jordan and Kobe, he's a much more team-oriented player. IMHO, he has long seen it as his responsibility to elevate the play of his teammates with his own play in ways that Jordan and Kobe were never interested in. Lebron is much more comparable to Magic while Kobe really modeled himself after Jordan.

Hard disagree with the "brings disrespect into himself" thing, too. IMHO, a lot of it is centered on Lebron not fitting neatly into the box that most people would like him to. I guess it just depends on what you admire in your athletes.

I’m 46 and have watched hundreds of Jordan games. Granted, I was overseas for much of prime Kobe. You’re just flat out wrong on Jordan whining to the refs about calls compared to LeBron. Like different stratosphere wrong. And the flopping is completely unforgivable of a supposed GOAT.

Mj and Messi are without compare. In addition to an absolute viciousness that both possessed, there’s a skill-fullness, grace, style, something aesthetic about how both played that is incomparable. An eye test that is just different. An unmatched beauty to their games. Ali had it. Tiger too. My Mount Rushmore

Have to agree to disagree. Jordan was as insufferable as anyone with refs. The idea that Jordan and the 90's were some shut up and just play heaven are hilarious. Jordan was infamous for blistering and trying to intimidate refs.

It's nice to think MJ would be the exception, but honestly, probably not. It's most likely that there are 30-50 players in the NBA right now who are better than MJ. That's just the nature of sports and development over time.
I disagree, Jordan has as much athletic ability as the best today and he has a refuse to lose attitude that others don’t have today.

Yeah, to me he and Magic had leadership skills that other players don't have today and like you say I think MJ had that "refuse to lose" attitude and so did Magic.

The highest verified vertical jumps of any NBA player remain, to this day, are
48 inches by Michael Jordan in 1984
48 inches by Wilt Chamberlain in 1960

Speaking of Wilt, he's still listed among top all-time track-and-field performers at Kansas, in their media guide, for high jump, shot-put, and triple jump. Arnold Schwartzenegger in a 2019 interview: "I would go watch him play when he was on the Lakers and we would work out together at Gold’s Gym. He did triceps extensions with 180 pounds. That strength just blew us all away. We later worked out every day on the set of ‘Conan the Destroyer.’

It's how it is with every sport. Jack in his prime couldn't compete with Tiger. And Jack was the best there ever was. The standards and levels of training and development just continue to reach for new heights, people from the past just can't keep up.
I generally agree with this idea that older players wouldn't be able to compete with current athletes, but I think Jordan would still be the best player on the floor in today's NBA. Physically he'd still match up well with most the NBA guards and with the hand check rule he'd run away with the scoring title. Plus, no one going to out compete him.

That said, I think there are probably pro basketball All-Stars from the 50s and 60s who wouldn't make an NBA roster today.

The game has certainly changed. It was more entertaining when it wasn’t all dunks or 3’s. If MJ had any struggle to today’s game it would be his need to catch up to the long range game - much like Lebron has had to adjust in the back part of his career.

I’m honestly convinced that Bird and Magic would dominate todays game if they had the training pipeline that today’s players have.
Bird especially would benefit from modern training. Bill Simmons was once talking about Lebron spending millions of dollars on this off-season workout and nutrition regimen. He joked that things had come a long way when Bird's off season meant going back to French Lick to lay his mom's gravel driveway drinking PBRs all day and throwing out his back.

What stupid things has he said?

And what makes him so unlikeable? He's a stand up guy. Married to his high school sweetheart. By all accounts a great dad and family man. Gives back untold millions to his communities and even built a school in Akron.

I'll answer that with why I find him unlikable.

China is systematically enslaving an entire ethnic group in forced labor camps. When Daryl Morey tweeted support for Hong Kong protestors, LeBron took the side of china, publicly telling him to "educate himself" on matters before speaking out publicly.

The guy is an un-principled POS who is happy to support a country actively engaging in modern day slavery to protect his financial interests. Zero respect for anything coming out of his hypocritical mouth.

I give him a pass for the South Beach thing. That’s a kid saying dumb things.

The inexcusable things are threatening a cop who shot and killed a teenager who was in the midst of trying to fatally stab another, his lack of empathy towards Hong Kong, etc.

This guy sums it up better than I could. Lebron is a great ball player and gifted businessman but his social commentary is appalling. He’s not smart on meaningful issues - but his success has gone to his head and he now thinks he’s really smart.

Would you hang out with a guy who posts photos of himself walking into work with a glass of wine or sitting at his bench “reading” page 1 of a book? How about one who forces his employer to hire his incompetent son?

Seriously dude. Put down the kool aid.
