Jakai Newton called Dakich a clown

It counts as a NCAA tournament win. IU is 1-1 in this year’s tournament and that is a fact.
Oh boy. No. Not regarded equally at all. This is where you constant sunshine pumpers lose people’s respect when you try to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear like this. And I’m not even that disappointed. The team basically met my expectations for Woodson’s first year, but I’m not going to pump it up into some big achievement or tell people that they should be pleased with it. No one should be pleased with it, especially the players .

What? It counts as a tournament win, or a loss, it’s a fact. That’s all I’m saying. You don’t have to like that and I don’t care if you do or you don’t because it’s irrelevant. No matter how large the storm cloud you fart is, a fact remains a fact.

A participation trophy is still a trophy but…
Back when had a program…20 years ago…success was measured by Conference championships, Sweet 16s, Final 4s, Nattys.
How quick does the foundation laid this year lead to the building back of the program?
Conventional wisdom says you need 2 full recruiting classes and some leadership from the inherited classes.
Davis was in over his head. Sampson was a liar. Crean was a fraud. Archie didn’t have the presence.
I like to think Woodson is the answer.
I like what I’ve seen so far

The Richmond Spiders beat RMK. What happened? Should Bob have been fired? Isn't that loss simply unallowed at a program as prestigious as Indiana?

I'm afraid that the jury has returned with a verdict. It's painfully clear that IU is not even in the same galaxy as Duke, a team that has been to the NCAAT 24 years in a row, and 36 out of the last 38. We have fans that are absolutely giddy about making it to a play-in game once in six years (excluding the cancelled COVID year).

IU wishes that they were as good as Iowa. The Hawkeyes have been to six out of the last eight NCAATs (excluding the cancelled COVID year). Over the past six seasons Iowa has finished in the top five of the B1G four times, while the Hoosiers came in at 9th, 10th, 11th, 9th, 6th, and 10th.

Take Iowa and Duke off the table. IU has become Minnesota.
So should we just decline NCAA bids until we have a guaranteed Elite 8 or Final Four team?

A lot of us see this year as.progress. it isnt anything to write home about but it is a.small step in the right direction.

This is just a ton of garbage. Who exactly is giddy at just making the tourney? Exactly no one. Some of us are realistic and understand we aren’t going from not making the tourney for 6 years to being Duke in one year. Building a good foundation and culture is the first step. Most of us have followed basketball and understand that. Screaming and whining that we aren’t Duke doesn’t make it any closer to happening.

If you don’t think that there are some fans giddy about IU making the tourney then you haven’t been reading these boards. I was responding to the post that stated IU needs to decide whether we want to be Duke or Iowa. I in no way was addressing being Duke in one year. Try to keep up.

I wasn’t screaming or whining, which is really rich coming from you.

Lots of our fans are living in the past, thinking we're going to magically regain our old glory through hiring the perfect coach. We fired that guy 2 decades ago, and are still trying to put the pieces back together. We're on our way but it's a process, not magic.

I’m not living in the past. I sadly accept the fact that we’re now a lower tier B1G team. Much like Minnesota. Hopefully we’ll become an Iowa one day.

IU wants to be Duke. Can we someday become a top 5 program again? “time will tell”. If I was a betting man I’d be fading it.

in the meantime if we could become an Iowa it would be a monstrous upgrade as a program. Obviously it would never be the ultimate goal , but whether or not we can ever become elite again, it would be a step forward.
If we want to be Iowa, why didn't we hire Alford?

He's done more at Iowa than Franny has.

Why is that rich coming from me? I’ve been reading the boards. Can you point out, even one post, of someone giddy? I must have missed it.

IU wants to be IU. Be true to itself. Not sell out it’s core beliefs, like Duke, to put glorified AAU teams on the floor.

I'm about as old as old-generation gets when it comes to Indiana basketball. A fan for 50 years, a double-alum, a consistent giver to the Varsity Club and a supporter of all things IU (even Dakich back in the day when he represented the university positively.)

And this "old-generation" fan thinks Dakich's take is absurd and the kids are totally right. No one is happy about losing by 30, but it is foolish and absurd to ignore the realities of fatigue and the effects of cross-country travel.

The last two weeks of the season were very positive for Indiana basketball and Indiana University. The last game was a negative...as it is for every team but one in college basketball.
Getting beaten at home by Rutgers with everything to play for? OK. Winning two games in the tournament was great, but the last two weeks were much like the previous rest of the season, a mixed bag that was ultimately a disappointment.

When one of the most toxic posters on this board tells me that I'm screaming and whining, when I clearly was not, that's rich. You clearly missed the point in my post that I was responding to another poster's comments on whether IU wants to be Duke or Iowa. Like I said, try to keep up.

You have not read one post with an IU fan being giddy with IU being in the play-in game?
Here you go -

"WTF were in mofo's how long has it been? Lets get after it. Dayum I'm pumped to be in there."

"iu is currently a ncaa tourney program. Thank effing god."

"At least we got in. We finished 9th in the Big Ten. We should be happy."

"Just glad our name was called.."

"I feel fortunate to be in it."

"We are playing really well. Just keep it going and we should beat Wyoming then St Mary's. UCLA is a different animal but no better than Purdue, Illinois, etc. Anything can happen in this tourney in the early rounds."

"2 play ins have made the final four, extra game to watch IU and it's really close for the trip"

"I'm happy IU is in"

"I don't think it is a disrespect for us"

"I just got feeling we can and will win 2 in this, and after that we become dangerous in this to anybody, will be fun. The play in may help us keep the higher level of play rolling"

All of the above posts are from one thread. There are plenty more. Somehow I don't think the Duke board would read the same if the Blue Devils were sent to Dayton.

Duke is a top ten team, we are on a total rebuild...no comparison. After the mid-season lows, I was giddy as **** that they played their way in late. Nothing but up from here.

Come on dude. Most of those posts were FAR from giddy. Most of them were a collective sigh of relief that the drought was over and lU was actually back in the NCAA.

Some people just don't know how to be happy. They are the perpetually malcontent. If there isn't something to be malcontent about they either find it, or just make shit up ..

No. Why would you even ask that question?

In response to your hand wringing over folks being excited about the upward trajectory of the program.

It's a long way back up. One step at a time.

I’m a toxic poster? What in the world makes you say that? I don’t ever remember interacting at all with you. Do you have me confused with someone else? Of course everyone was happy to have made the tournament. Were you not happy? Does that mean people weren’t disappointed hugely by the loss?

What were you happy about this season? The 9th place finish? Getting the play in game?
Happy to make the tourney after six years out. Happy to beat Purdue after however many losses. Happy to play well in BTT for first time I can EVER remember. If that makes me “toxic” then I guess I’ll live with it. ( I know it’s not you that said it). Is that going to be good enough for the future? Absolutely not. But for Woody’s first year? I’d give it a C+ .

X will be the leader on this team next year. Next time DD is in the hall I’m gonna make it a point to go tell him he’s an asshat.
I'd buy a ticket and I have a simple recommendation. Dan has a massive ego. Don't call him an asshole, he'll wear it with pride. Ask him when he started feeling disconnected with Hoosiers nation. If you do, he'll have to contemplate a disconnection, which I'm guessing he thinks is still good. Pain through paper cuts. Go Hoosiers!

Making the tournament has more to do with it being a down year than a big improvement.

I’d give this season a C. Next season will be rough.

Correction: Duke was a top ten team. Maybe you didn't hear:

Whatever Duke becomes, it won't be the same.

This season was three steps above where we were heading had AM not been shitcanned. Next year will be two steps above where we would be had Dolson waited until last week to do the deed.
Glad we are in the relative position we are in.

context is necessary.

We are barely a step ahead of where we were last year. Next year will be a large step back from this year (barring complete roster turnover). We aren’t close to being a deep run team. Our coach is 64. How old will he be when we are capable of making a deep run?

You can't look at it that way, you have to compare us to where we would be had AM not been fired, which was by far and away the expectation. We are well ahead of where we would have been and another step forward next year.

In that case, where would we be had Crean never been fired?

I don’t know how you see next year as going to be a step forward. Very likely we are not a tournament team which would be a step back.
