Jakai Newton called Dakich a clown

In AAU, hard defense is when you put your hand in the air every 5th time your man shoots. We expended almost zero energy on D. And as others have pointed out, teams are on the same schedules.
Another obtuse invalid comparison.
I have one: we won World War II after four years so IU should have been able to suck it up against St. Mary’s.

You're right. Not as bad as I was thinking.

<gump>
I am not a smart man.
</gump>

That said, I still think it was a factor, moreso than the "5/8" talk. YMMV.
Of course it was a factor. It wasn’t the only factor, but to think it had no bearing on the team’s performance is moronic. We have plenty of morons proving how moronic they are on this forum.

Dakich behaves like a child. But not a fan of players/recruits, coach’s daughters getting in the sandbox with him. He thrives on that, best to just ignore him.
And this thread will be mentioned multiple times/hour during the 3 hours he has for the local show on Monday. Which is the show he'll be using to pimp the Outkick show he's doing in the mornings.

As far as being worn out goes? Absolutely. It’s not a valid excuse. SMU was simply a better team. Woodson has the off-season to completely gut and reassemble the team.
I don't think I have read anyone saying that SM wasn't the better team. It wouldn't surprise me any if IU would loose to them by around 10 with adequate rest and prep time. The point is the margin of victory for SM was aided by the factors that IU had to deal with.

No argument from me to those saying that IU made their own bed with losing games that should not have been lost.

I think the fatigue factor with the 5 games in 8 days narrative is overblown. I'm more convinced it was the bullshit travel fiasco that had them up all night and getting little to no sleep and having to prepare and play that evening that played a larger role. There's a reason they have curfews and bed checks and the like before big games. I did my share of all nighters when I was that age and I'll guarantee my performance the following day was subpar.
Mentally fatigued

Ok, it wasn't playing 5 games in 8 days but it was the travel?
You don't think the two may have had a cumulative effect?

I think the biggest factor was that SMU was the better team by a wide margin on Thursday evening.

I just find the emphasis on the 5/8 with little to no mention of the botched travel schedule to be out of whack. Yes, St. Mary's was the better team, and yes we played lots of games, and yes we got hosed on the travel. St. Mary's being the better team was the primary factor by far, but not by 30 points (IMO). I'd attribute the huge scoring differential to the travel mess rather than the 5/8.

I agree we likely wouldn’t lose by 30 without the travel and 5/8 factors. Probably still a double digit loss. That’s still a big issue.

Absolutely. They would have lost to the better team but not they way they did.

Lol okay? That’s my point? Gut the team. Start over. Send all 7 Seniors and some of the underclassmen packing.
And reassemble with who? We likely won’t pick up any high profile transfers with a completely gutted team. And replacing that many players would destroy any foundation that Woody established and could trigger a decommit from a guy like Hood-schifino

Transfers. Many teams reassembled their teams through the portal this year. If we keep those players we will get the same results (worse actually with TJD leaving) next year.

JHS shouldn’t be going anywhere, because he will be in line for 35+ mpg next year. If anything was going to make JHS decommit, it would be the lack of playing time for young guys this year.

I’m very thankful that some of our posters have no influence whatever over our basketball program. The Negative Nancies are the worst. They live to whine and their ideas would only make the team bad. Crap like start Lander or Leal (they’ll play or start when they’re ready) and get rid of all the players is just dumb and would guarantee losses.

I mean it’s the only rational response I had. He/she/it is Looking like a troll more and more. It’s obvious a bunch of posters have never played organized ball. Never studied the game or watched off the ball. Lander and leal will get their shot if they improve defensively.

The old school in me says,"Ok, if you are tired then make sure you take care of business during the year".
See, this has more logic. Everyone agrees IU fell short in many games where they shouldn't have. That certainly impacted our argument for a higher seed and we've all voiced our displeasure throughout the season around that.

In the end, had you asked me before the season if I'd be happy with just making the tourney in year 1, I'd have said yes. IU did that. I think this team improved all season and finished strong. I think the team is better than St. Mary's under normal circumstances. I also expect this to be what our bad seasons look like as we go forward. But I refuse to disregard the obvious just to whine on about nothing. I was furious on selection Sunday because I already knew what position we were put in. How did we all talk about the precarious position we were put in as soon as we found out but then were supposed to act like it shouldn't matter?

Concur with all that.

So, does IU want to be Iowa or Duke? Only time will tell.

I'm afraid that the jury has returned with a verdict. It's painfully clear that IU is not even in the same galaxy as Duke, a team that has been to the NCAAT 24 years in a row, and 36 out of the last 38. We have fans that are absolutely giddy about making it to a play-in game once in six years (excluding the cancelled COVID year).

IU wishes that they were as good as Iowa. The Hawkeyes have been to six out of the last eight NCAATs (excluding the cancelled COVID year). Over the past six seasons Iowa has finished in the top five of the B1G four times, while the Hoosiers came in at 9th, 10th, 11th, 9th, 6th, and 10th.

Take Iowa and Duke off the table. IU has become Minnesota.

This is just a ton of garbage. Who exactly is giddy at just making the tourney? Exactly no one. Some of us are realistic and understand we aren’t going from not making the tourney for 6 years to being Duke in one year. Building a good foundation and culture is the first step. Most of us have followed basketball and understand that. Screaming and whining that we aren’t Duke doesn’t make it any closer to happening.

Yeah, it wasn’t really giddiness so much as a huge sigh of relief

Lots of our fans are living in the past, thinking we're going to magically regain our old glory through hiring the perfect coach. We fired that guy 2 decades ago, and are still trying to put the pieces back together. We're on our way but it's a process, not magic.

Watch them lose? Wow, they went one round farther. Or, to be accurate, they won one and lost one. Just like IU did. Except for Iowa...
I love how people consider winning a play in game an equal tournament victory. Like saying at least IU won a game vs Kentucky losing in the first round. Play-in game is not the first round, it’s a play-in game.

You’ve earned the privilege to compete for a spot in the tournament is what it is.

You and Zeke nailed it.
We have proven there is not anything special in the water in Bloomington.
Some people thought there was a Bob Knight behind every tree. The real idiots thought he didn’t matter.

It counts as a NCAA tournament win. IU is 1-1 in this year’s tournament and that is a fact.

Bloom teaches great defense on his AAU teams..

A participation trophy is still a trophy but…
Back when had a program…20 years ago…success was measured by Conference championships, Sweet 16s, Final 4s, Nattys.
How quick does the foundation laid this year lead to the building back of the program?
Conventional wisdom says you need 2 full recruiting classes and some leadership from the inherited classes.
Davis was in over his head. Sampson was a liar. Crean was a fraud. Archie didn’t have the presence.
I like to think Woodson is the answer.
I like what I’ve seen so far
