As first reported in the most recent edition of The Cheat Sheet, Indy Politics has learned that Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales is under federal investigation for alleged allegations of money laundering and violating the federal racketeering statute.

Our sources tell us this reportedly involves a local Mexican restaurant, which our sources tell us has served as a money laundering front for either the Mexican or Guatemalan drug cartels.

Morales’ connection to this has likely involved money laundering as a facilitator or connector. Now, exactly how he allegedly accomplished this is still unclear

This is not the only issue facing Morales; he has also been accused of allegedly using state property (e.g., e-mails) to raise money for his political campaign. We are also told that Secretary of State employees who received bonuses were “asked” to “donate” a portion of their check to his political campaign.

This is not a surprise to me at all.

Morales was one of the wacko candidates that the GOP delegates chose -- despite all kinds of red flags about him. And he was chosen over a really good person in Holli Sullivan -- who, full disclosure, is a friend.

Expect more of this as the state GOP veers further into wacko-land.

BTW, I'm proud to say that I voted for Destiny Wells when she ran against Morales. Even kicked her some cash.

Morales struck me as wholly unfit to serve in any public office -- let alone the one that deals with elections. Looks like I made the right decision.

I did as well. But she get crushed. This guy seemed like a total clown from the start and had zero credentials. Goes to show what blind partisan voting gets you

Straight ticket voting makes it really hard for any down ballot Ds in Indiana, even when they are objectively better candidates. It’s actually really sad to see.

It's one of the worst aspects of having single party dominance -- be it in a city, a state, or otherwise. Look at Chicago as a great example (albeit with the other party).

This is why I'm considering supporting Dems in state elections. If the GOP's dominance is going to result in this kind of thing (and I include the Beckwith nomination, too), then I just can't get behind that. Hopefully the Democrats can give me some good reasons to support them.

He actually had worse that zero credentials. I forget all the details, but I do remember him getting fired from the office for excessive absenteeism or some such thing. And there was more.

I remember reading all that and thinking "Uh, who the hell are the delegates who see somebody like that and say 'Yep, that's our guy!'?" Especially when his opponent had served well in the office as a mid-term appointee, is eminently reasonable and normal, etc.

If somebody told me that the GOP convention is filled with delegates who are double-agents of the Democratic Party, intent on destroying the GOP from within, I might just buy that.

Man, I hear ya. But the Indiana D party is just so weak and inept. I don’t know how they ever get back to being a competitive minority party even.

I was aghast at the number of races this year on my ballot where there either was no opposing candidate or there may as well have been no opposing candidate.

It was even the case in our token Democratic district down here. The guy who had the seat decided to run for an open judicial seat...and a City Councilman stepped right in without either a primary or general election opponent.

House and Senate races around here that used to always be competitive no longer are. Forget party loyalties and agendas for a minute: this cannot be a good thing for our society.
