If you don't like the direction

I have watched IU basketball avidly since about 1963. Last night I

worked until about 8, and then went home and watched NCIS and Person of Interest instead of IU basketball. I stopped buying IU basketball tickets and no longer donate to the program. I haven't bought any IU merchandise in at least two years.
I still want IU to win, and watch about half of the games - but it is no longer my number one priority on game days. I do not enjoy watching Crean's teams play - especially the defensive philosophy and execution. I am not a fan of the offense, either, but I understand what he is trying to do and agree that when it is run properly against a team that does not respond properly on defense it can be attractive - and it can put up some points. I am frustrated by his approach to team building, also - but I appreciate his ability to help individual players improve their conditioning and skills.

My wife of 42 years is concerned about my reduced interest in IU basketball.

Like who

and you know this board would go crazy if we hired a coach from a small school who nobody had heard of. I don't think Bob Mckillip is going to leave Davidson after all these years and he is one of the best coaches out there from a small conference. Would you want to hire the coach from Belmont because he does run a good efficient offense but I don't think that is the homerun hire that this fan base expects.

Re: Like who

A lot of good coaches came from small school and did very well...cough cough Coach Knight.

Shaka Smart VCU
Marshall Wichita St
Archie Miller Dayton
Larry Krystowiak Utah
Ben Jacobsen Northern Iowa

How to contact the folks in charge

President McRobbie: iupres@iu.edu

IU Trustees: bdot@indiana.edu

Fred Glass (although he is most likely part of the problem): iuad@indiana.edu

The UM students didn't mess around. I'd agree that IU folks need to start putting some action behind their words, myself included.

Why damage the program?

If you don't want a coaching change, why do you want to damage the program? The only reason I can think of is to force a change of coaches. Look at Illinois. They got turned down by the top coaches and got Groce. He is far from an elite coach. Is that what everyone wants? Replace a coach on the hope we can do better?

I think we should support this team, keep AH as the loud and difficult place it has been to play in, and support whoever our coach is. We should all be wanting our team to get healthy and make a strong run. Personnel changes will be done if, or when, necessary and at the appropriate time..

Re: Why damage the program?

That is a loser mentality. IU can do better than what they have...it doesn't take a great coach to do better than Crean has done.

You must not read this forum much

because I have one who has been ridiculed for backing CTC for years. How am I hurting the program by watching every game and cheering for them to win. My post was to the complainers out there to do something if they are unhappy instead of coming on here every day to complain about the same thing every day.

The only one on that list

I would want is Marshall and I mentioned him in this post when I said that if you can't get Marshall or Stevens then you are not going to get another elite coach. I might look at Jacobsen from N. Iowa but that hire would probably not go well with this fan base. Also I wouldn't call VCU and Wichita St a small school either. I don't think Smart's style of play would work in the big ten over the long run because if you have good guards who can handle the ball you can torch that defense like UM did in the tournament a couple of years ago.

I think some people think the changes should have been made or at least

Be made at the end of the season but don't feel confident they will be made by this administration.

So, "I dare you to stop donating". "Not one time" has it happened

So, in his own words: if you want to "yank a donation, go ahead". Sounds like a dare to me.

And then he says that it hasn't "once, not one time". Really??????

So you have inside information?

You know for a fact we would replace our current staff with a better one? What evidence do you have to support that? People wanting change because "we deserve better" need to look at our coaching changes over the years. Which changes did we make that improved the product on the field, or court?

I am all for improving the program, but the way it works is that you fire your coach and hope you can get your target coach. When you don't get who you want, you end up with a different version of what you had before.

The athletic department should be concerned. Apathy is worse than anger.

An angry fan base still cares.

Once people stop caring, then a program is in bad shape.

Maybe not one person becoming apathetic, but everyday more and more fans start moving in that direction.

I need examples

What coaching change has IU made in revenue producing sports that has given us long term improvement? Our ability to hire new coaches doesn't give me confidence that we would get anything other than what we have now. Everyone likes the coach for a couple of years before half the fanbase is ready to fire them.

I am all for a better coach. Will Coach K leave Duke? How about Pitino? Illinois thought they were going to get a big name coach and got a 1 hit wonder. Stevens and the latest sexy pick of the year may not want to come here. Then what?

No one is embracing Mediocrity

Like the reason I said I started this post is that fans like us has nothing we can do to make a change so if you are unhappy then do something about it instead of bitching and moaning about it everyday. Because we still root for this team and coach to win does not mean we are embracing mediocrity and I am never going to turn my back on this program.

Glass has made his point

After Crean (and Wilson) were hired he wanted everyone to see that there wouldn't be a coaching carousel every few years. He's given Crean 7 so far. Time to go. As far as the replacement, that's what the search committee is for.

Re: So you have inside information?

Well looking at Crean's results, it isn't hard to match....Heck Mike Davis's results are very similar if not better than CTC

If I am a top tier coach

I am not coming to IU unless I am among the highest paid coaches and have a 8-10 year contract. IU will think the hot mid major coaches that has never coached in a major conference will suddenly look much better. Sampson was the highest level coach we have hired. We held our nose and ignored the trouble he was in.

IU already pays that kind of money

and gives long term deals so nothing to change in that regard. We don't know what IU can get without reaching out to potential candidates.

I don't want IU to be Purdue or Iowa. If the current path is what IU chooses to continue on then I believe the program, the brand will continue to sink further into the abyss of mediocrity. Just IMHO.

I wasnt talking you Mr True Fan Police..

mostly because I'm not sure you even know the definition of the word.

I was talking to the guy hugging on mediocre results.

I root for IU every game

I don't have to root for the coach. I'm a IU fan in spite of the coach. As far as bitching and moaning, I believe this is still a forum where you can express your thoughts including your thoughts about the state of the program. If this is the fanboy forum I've logged on here mistakenly.

It's YOU people who support the program "no matter what"

that's the biggest problem.

Especially you people that go to the games. Imagine a half-empty (or greater) Assembly Hall. Pretty sure that would get someone's attention rather quickly.

But, no! All you "true fans" continue to donate, go to games, buy merchandise, etc. So, tell me, what incentive is there for those in charge to make a change? Zip.

College and basketball is a business. You think Fred Glass and ilk are losing sleep because IU hasn't won a Championship? Puh-leeease, stop kidding yourself. They worked elsewhere before coming to IU, and they'll work elsewhere when they leave (not soon enough, imho). They're golden as long as the gold keeps flowing in.

So, true blue fans, keep buying them tickets! And when the year ends on yet another down note, and you wonder what the heck happened, and why it will probably happen again next year, well, just look in the mirror.

Some of you guys take yourself to seiously

This is a basketball game and if you don't enjoy it then stop watching because this is for entertainment purposes. If an outcome of a basketball game which is played by teenagers causes you this much displeasure then you are the one that has a problem. I use to let the outcome of games bother me for days but now I am over it after a few hours because I have grown up and have other more important things to worry about. I still enjoy watching IU and all of college basketball so I am not going to stop watching the game. I am also going to buy my IU gear because I am proud of this university win or lose.

I said I would have fired him

the day of the accident because of all the off the court incidents but they didn't fire him so I am going to back him until he is let go. If they decide to let him go then I would be for it but if they don't let him go I will still back the program.

Tell me who likes mediocre results

just because we still back the team and coach and want them to win doesn't mean we are happy with the results and really there is nothing a fan could do about it anyways. if you are so unhappy why don't you get off of your butt and do something about it if you think it is that easy to cause a change.

Re: I said I would have fired him

Lol so you are happy with whatever IU does cause you support IU! Dude come on..I love IU also but this clown is ruining IU basketball. IU is still a hot job especially now. Crean has it back to an average program. A new coach can now take it higher.

It was going dowm hill before CTC

and you know it. I never said that I think CTC is the guy to get us back to the top but he is not as bad as some of you guys think. A horrible coach could not win the big ten conference when it was the best it had been in along time. I know making the sweet 16 is not great but a horrible coach could not do that as well.

Re: It was going dowm hill before CTC

Mike Davis won a BIG and went to the final game.

it was a 5 way tie

and not outright like CTC was and was a 5 seed in the tournament that year. Like I said I never said CTC was a great coach and there are a lot of coaches better but we are not likely to get an elite coach.

This is just a message board and people are going to talk IU Hoops

So if you were at a bar and you overheard two guys banging on Crean, do you interrupt them and tell them that their opinions don't mean anything and they should take it up with Fred Glass or just shut up?

That's basically what you just did.

This isn't your message board. You can pick and choose what you want to read. You can go to other message boards.

I enjoy the entertainment of the mood swings from this and other message boards. Hell it's more entertaining than our mediocre basketball program.

Yes, it's mediocre, because our coach is mediocre. I told you that after year 3. It will be the same in year 12 or year 25.

Unless he completely changes the way he recruits, manages the team and manages the game...I'm going to be snarky because it's not a sustainable way to run a successful program.

I can only hope that others can see it, particularly Indiana leadership.

Until then...hello 5th place finishes and a complete waste of an amazing basketball hotbed.

Other teams in the conference would kill...absolutely kill for our advantages (name brand, fan base, recruiting backyard).

I agree with most of what you say about Crean

and he probably is not the right guy to lead us to being elite but we might have to face the fact that we might not ever get back to where we use to be. I just don't want to make a change just to make a change because if we do make a change I want e get an upgrade and not just make a lateral move.

Why would we ever face the fact that we might never get back to being elite

We've had one decent coach in the past 15 years and he had us top 7, stud recruits coming in, and leading the Big Ten before the shoe dropped.

We basically have another Davis regime. Actually Davis will probably end up being a tad better, especially if we miss the tournament yet again this year.

There are a ton of successful coaches out there (Gregg Marshall would rake at IU, Shaka Smart is again dominating his conference and winning over 70% of his games). Act swiftly and decidedly.

Sitting around doing nothing and just letting things be isn't going to get this program anywhere. Actually it could hurt us as more and more recruits realize that Crean is a dead coach walking.

I am not a fan of Smart

because I just don't feel that his pressing style would work in the big ten in the long run. If you have good guards who can brake the press then you can torch that style just like UM did in the tournament a couple of years ago. To me if we couldn't get Marshall or Stevens then I don't see anyone else out there that would be available as a huge upgrade over what have now. From what I heard during the tournament last year and they were talking about Marshall they said that they did not think Marshall has much interest in coaching at a blue blood program. They said he just wants to coach basketball and not have to worry about making crazy alumni happy.

You told me all I need to know about basketball when you said Smart

wouldn't be an upgrade to Crean. Thanks I needed that laugh.

What has he done that is any better

both has made one final four. I have seen that style in the big ten before when Tom Davis was coach at Iowa using the full court press just like VCU and in the long run it did not produce championships. It works really well when the team is at home with the crowd behind them but on the road it did not work all that well. If you have great guards the press is pretty easy to beat.

Re: I am not a fan of Smart

Marshal has said the opposite. He started Ed he would only leave for an elite job....in other words he's not going to Texas Tech, but a potential blue blood? Yes

Some announcer said it and you have taken it as gospel.
