I’ve changed my mind.

The best thing that could happen, IMO, is for OG Republicans and Populists to come to an understanding on border and immigration policies. The OG position was largely represented in the form of Sen. Lankford's proposed bill -- essentially that they're up for a more orderly and less chaotic influx of migrants, but not so much for closing the valve. While a lot of people said that Trump himself scuttled that bill, the truth is that the 5K/day tolerance it had made it a non-starter for most Republicans. Many people asked the obvious question: if you can close down the border once it reaches 5k/day, why can't you do it at zero?

Well, because they don't want to. But rare is the politician -- Republican, Democrat, or otherwise -- who will come out and admit this. The prevailing sentiment in the political establishment is that the health of our economy is reliant on this source of labor. While there's an argument to be made for that, the politics on this has shifted quite a bit in the last few years.

And that, too, was represented not only by the emergence of that Senate bill, but also in the messaging that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris both have given on border security. Voters pretty much across the board are fed up with the border situation. So, for me, I think it would be wise for the OG Republicans to continue moving in the Populists' direction....on that issue (but not on matters like trade and foreign policy).

The broader context of all this, though, is that we're already in a very precarious situation in fiscal terms. We've known it was coming for a long time. Now it's here. And, from where I stand, neither party is anywhere near prepared to deal with it with their current policy platforms and governing visions.

Good post crazed, a lot to unpack here. Here are a few responsive thoughts:

  • Populism - while I understand your point about suggesting OG Republicans moving towards the increasingly popular view on immigration, what are the broader implications of such a decision? To me, acknowledging that a specific "populist" or "popular" point is not accepting broad Populist views, but might there be pressure from followers of Populism to continue pushing for and instilling their beliefs, even if intellectually inaccurate (e.g., tariffs)? In other words, I'm concerned about the "give an inch, take a mile" consequences.

  • Immigration - while I think most of us (sans Bloom) acknowledge immigration issues and risks currently going on, I worry about the "spin" that gets placed on the concept of immigration. Safety, crime, overcrowding, homelessness, etc. are all real problems presented by the recent border troubles. That being said, it irks me that the GOP has become less favorable around immigration. Elon Musk, for example, seems to support sustained legal immigration - but many of his followers aren't getting what he is saying. Broadly speaking, GOP and Dem supporters with jobs should not feel threatened by immigrants because many of the jobs they are filling are those that nobody is willing to fill. I always find it amusing when people in rural KY or inner-city Louisville are complaining that there are no jobs - yet unemployment has never been at lower levels. We all know why they aren't working.

  • Fiscal Situation - most agree that neither party is equipped to deal with the spending problem, nor have they demonstrated an ability to practice sensibility at the national level. It is interesting that, in contrast, Walz has run up some significant surpluses in MN thanks to insanely high income taxes, but rather restrained spending (to date). Minnesota sits in the middle of many "red" states in US News Fiscal Stability Index, though outside of Minneapolis, St. Paul and Duluth, it remains quite conservative. How do we translate party fiscal responsibility to the national level from successful state levels?

This thread wasn't about Trump though Aloha. This was about how bad the other candidate is. I'm not saying you still cannot find a reason to vote for her, but this is embarrassing. All of her speeches and answers to questions are embarrassing.
I don’t care very much about her. I consider her fit enough even if I disagree with most of her policies.

Speaking of embarrassing, you don’t consider Trump’s speeches and behavior embarrassing? As a Republican I think they’re deeply embarrassing.

Again, this thread is about Kamala. We've had hundreds on Trump over the years. I'm staying on topic. You are justifying your responses with "yabbut" Trump.

Populism...."give an inch, take a mile" consequences

Well, I'd say that's certainly a legitimate concern. But I also think it's something that would need to be properly understood on both sides of this. Personally, I think the border/immigration issue is far more visceral than anything dealing with trade, tariffs, etc. It all does dovetail together. But I feel confident the cultural effects of the former, as opposed to the latter which is purely economic, put it on a higher plane.

In other words, I think the primary thrust of the populist movement would be largely neutralized if they can come to a sensible arrangement on border/immigration and just table other related issues. At least, I hope so.

Immigration...."it irks me that the GOP has become less favorable around immigration. Elon Musk, for example, seems to support sustained legal immigration - but many of his followers aren't getting what he is saying.

I get it. They can start by leveling with people. I think the single biggest reason the GOP got subsumed by Trump's populism is because they left themselves vulnerable on this issue by talking one way about it and governing (or trying to govern) a very different way. They were disingenuous about it and it bit them in the ass. So they need to make the case to people that Elon Musk has been making.

The key here is, was, and has always been, this: SECURE THE BORDER FIRST. If they do this, it will give them a helluva lot more credibility to deal with who we let in, how many, what requirements, etc.

But every single time somebody has tried to broach the subject of immigration, there has been a steadfast refusal to predicate other immigration policy changes on first making the border reasonably secure.

When I say that they need to move the populists' way, this is what I mean. There is no harm at all in approaching the issue this way. It doesn't mean that we no longer have any immigrants coming here. It just means that we have some measure of control over who, how many, etc. And doing this would also better address the issues of drug smuggling, human trafficking, terrorist crossings, etc.

Fiscal Situation - most agree that neither party is equipped to deal with the spending problem, nor have they demonstrated an ability to practice sensibility at the national level.

The problem with comparing the federal situation to state situations is that states can't print money. As such, they have no choice but to make ends meet (or, at least, come closer to meeting within the confines of their bond ratings and such).

The ability to print money as a means of paying debts has historically been irresistible to politicians who want to avoid, at all costs, having to make the kinds of hard choices that might threaten their power and livelihoods. I can't say that I'm hopeful that we're going to break this trend.

Some Dems seem convinced that they can raise the tax revenues to bring our fiscal imbalance back into a manageable situation. Or, at least, they want to convince us that they can. But that's simply not going to happen. I do anticipate that we're going to be seeing overall higher taxes in the next quarter century than we saw during the past quarter century. But it won't come close to producing the revenues that would be needed.

And I also doubt the will is going to materialize to make the kinds of spending cuts that would be necessary to close the gap.

So...what's that leave?

Low cost of living. Low unemployment. Cheap gas. No wars. Border numbers better. Tell us where we have amnesia

He fckd up Covid
You don’t remember the conflicts. Afghanistan, Syria/ISIS, countering piracy, etc. Amnesia.

Border was better, though he used some authorities no longer available to the President.

Presidents get credit they don’t deserve for most economic conditions. And he never took a single step toward pushing Congress to reduce deficit and debt as he promised. He also promised infrastructure and did zip on that.

The whole time he muddled through internationally and treated adversaries as allies and allies like adversaries. Chaos and erratic behavior throughout.

I liked justices and corporate tax cuts.

Whatever good will he deserves was destroyed by his behavior and actions after losing the election and also proving he shouldn’t have a security clearance let alone access to our highest classification levels of national security information. On top of that his mental instability is worse and he’s showing the signs of mental acuity decline that comes with being an old geezer. He’s not an option. He never should have gotten the nomination.

A progressive will never be an option.

Maybe. But they're going to win. Hell, they actually played it beautifully. Installed the alternative candidate at the last possible second to avoid any chance of significant scrutiny. Just put a Not Trump t-shirt on someone and count the votes. It just happened to be Harris.

The Republicans are the ones that created this scenario.
Democrats created the scenario. Everyone is responsible for their own vote. Democrats want a socialist at the top of their party.

@hoosierdug in answer in part to your post is set forth throughout this thread and the other I tagged you

I gathered that much. But, hey, we're all entitled to our own opinions. I don't see a fit candidate on the ballot. I think we're heavily screwed either way.
Well, I don’t think she’s mentally unstable or in mental decline like Biden clearly is and Trump increasingly shows the signs of. Now, her mental capability probably isn’t at Obama or Condi Rice level.

So you want to piggy back on this? Really? And is this English?
Look, the border bill by Lankford was the most conservative going back decades and the GOP achieved EVERYTHING it has always wanted (read: no protections for dreamers, while also throttling back asylum seekers at the border). But Trump did, in fact, kill it. Just stupidity. And why would anyone, given the declining birth rate in this country, be against increasing legal immigration in this country? It’s idiotic and would be a serious detriment to continued growth to continue to say that you want to expel millions of immigrants and totally stop legal immigration.
And, to address your dumba$$ post earlier in this thread, do you really believe increased gas prices are the current admin’s fault? Ffs.
Trump and the GOP had 2 years to build that fvcking wall and/or solve the border issue (along with ACA) but they did nada. Nothing.
It’s comical, the mental gymnastics that the GOP goes through to dismiss or ignore the bat$hit crazy and downright idiotic $hit that Trump says every day.

If they would’ve removed that tolerance level of encounters made between ports of entry, that bill might have passed. At 5k per day, that’s a tolerance of up to 1.8m per year.

But they refused to do that. They always refuse to. It’s the sticking point literally every single time the issue is deliberated.

If they can approach this issue by securing the border first, they might actually make progress.

Get the fck out of here with your stupid uninformed shit. The bill codified an absurd amount of numbers within the context of Biden saying he has the power to shut it down. Something close to 2 million. The numbers spiked when biden lifted title 42, three asylum agreements, remain in mexico and cut funding. And you think it's a republican problem? Do you want to compare numbers:

The immediate attack on gas along with policy actions and rhetoric absolutely had an impact on gas prices. Do you understand the difference between contributed to and caused? My initial impression is that much will have to be explained to you. Is this from the industry, of course, but to say biden's actions didn't have an impact is bullshit.

Want to do inflation next? prices?

On Trump and the Lankford bill, it’s important to remember that Trump’s reported comment was not to kill it, whatever it was. He told Mike Johnson he should kill it if they didn’t get everything they wanted. There’s substantial difference there.

Given the way the politics have shifted on the issue, I think it was pretty sound advice. The Republicans aren’t the ones on the political defensive about it, the Dems are.

It would be like Republicans offering a compromise abortion bill to Democrats. Given the politics of abortion, why would Democrats cede anything to Republicans on it?

Absolutely. and there's a practical element to all of this as well. we've let in what 10 million ish during this administration. now we're going to codify millions more and assuming even with a streamlined process it's absurd to believe that we can process and adjudicate this many people. look at social security. it takes something like 8 months to get an initial decision on the application. reconsideration. request for a hearing. years to get one person through the system. people who speak english. why will this be any different. expanding gov quagmire.

Heard what? Dems have had some incredibly bright candidates. Incredible speakers. Clinton. Obama.
You don't remember all the claims of Obama being an empty suit? That he was an affirmative action candidate? That he had never accomplished anything substantial?

Too many headers or too many cosmos?

You can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube, dumba$$. Title 42 allowed for no asylum for anybody. Go read the Statue of Liberty. There SHOULD be a legal way for people to enter this country. Period. It’s how YOU are here. It’s how I am here.
lol. Great citation. The US drills more, pumps out more petroleum, than at any time in its history. Ffs. Why don’t you just post an article from Nazi’s explaining why Nazis aren’t bad. lol. That industry just continues to fvck over the American consumer while paying out dividends to its stockholders. Fvck off with that. What have their quarterly profits been over the past 3 years? You're an idiot. Truly. We can also apply this same $hit to food and the shrinking amounts of product they supply for the same or increased price that they charge. But again, let’s lay that at the feet of the current admin.

Inciting the first invasion of the US capital since the Brits in 1812 based on the lie that he actually won the 2020 election? An unaccomplished moron? What? Because her daddy didn’t give her hundreds of millions of dollars? lol. You can’t make up how dumb you people are. Just awesome.

title 42. you forgot remain in mexico? the asylum agreements? funding? Did you also ignore the numbers. Shoot it seems you did.
So you didn't bother to read. You can't separate information from the source because you're a triggered moron. I trust you don't believe that excess stimulus, extended unemployment, converting montly tax credits to checks, staying foreclosures and evictions had any impact on prices etc. You're revealing yourself at once to be a dickhead and another uneducated/uniformed progressive. congratulations. i'm sure you are invested in this election in hopes of gov aid.

Excess stimulus. Who wrote those checks (and insisted his name be on them)? And I’m not reading the fvcking stupid, industry driven biased bull$hit you offer up. And you expect me to read that $hit and I’M the dumb one. Lol. Ok, morAn.

yes stick with the conspiracy garbage. you're out of your depth on substantive matters. go back to the otf or free board where you're possibly viewed as clever and maybe even of average intelligence. here you're an easy target.
trump wrote the initial checks then biden exacerbated matters by trying to be transformative with all of the absurd actions i outlined. inflation jumped to 9 percent. want to see the fed's findings on same re biden stim? does it appear on your msnbc feed?

what on Earth am i delusional about? are you okay? trump was absolutely wrong about claiming the election was stolen. it wasn't. he didn't hole up in dc and bunker down with a militia. he went home and filed lawsuits. and lost those as well. because he didn't have a case. this isn't hard, despite your inexpert efforts to make it so

The Republican party has been trending left, right along with everyone in the Dem party going even further left.

I do find it amazing that she talks about this stuff with Oprah like there's never been big opportunities before. Oprah has made hundreds of millions of dollars telling women how to lose weight and what to expect from their marriages, despite being overweight and single her entire life. If that's not a huge opportunity that was taken advantage of, I don't know what it is.
Oprah never came across as lecturing others when she was lecturing them about their weight etc. She came across as friendly and helpful, plus she actually did lose a lot of weight (for a while).
