I’ll admit that 1/6 really pissed me off and made me worry about our country. I know others don’t feel the same, but that was a momentous day, and not in a good way. It showed the worst of us.

But the passage of time has shown that we are a resilient lot and we keep chugging on. The country as a whole will have its ups and downs, but for almost all of us, the POTUS has no effect on our daily lives. Because of that, I quit paying as much attention to politics. I made a similar decision with IU bball about 10 years ago. I’m certainly happier as a result of those choices. Especially the bball part.

AOC thinking this is what her career is. Grassley on the other end. Term limits or even part time. Meet by zoom. People with other active careers. And I get the continuity lobbying etc issues that may implicate but it might be beneficial

That’s what made me look up this thread, I remembered the uproar over the idea of Trump pardoning himself and/or his family. The most corrupt administration in American history was a commonly used phrase back then.

Of course, Joe is the only American president to EVER pardon immediate family members, not to mention basically his ENTIRE immediate family.

I don't know, what percentage of Americans worry about Guam sinking? I don't think the Iowas were there, so it was only hit by 14-inch shells but it did stay afloat through that.

Sortition pretty much means one term and done (the math behind two terms would make it very unlikely). Then we get people in from very diverse backgrounds. We can have an autoworker, a stay-at-home parent, a small farmer, and a small business owner. We would get people familiar with aspects of America that your average big-time business person or lawyer has no clue about.

It isn't all about smarts. Some of it is wanting to make America better. Some of it is knowing what the issues are, not just what you want to be the issues so you can parrot the popular wording of your side. Bringing in generic people will allow for that. Yes, we will get crazed partisans, but we will get more people than today who really want to look beyond their blinders.

And I think you’d have a big enough pool with 535 that’d you get enough expertise and knowledge and smarts thrown in. Sortition is the jury system. And there is always the argument that they might not be capable of complex cases so maybe an expert jury is better. That or a panel might even be a thing now in noodles world. But again with 535 you should get all types and plenty of “experts” smart people

I do think there shouldn't be such a thing as a 'career' politician. I'd be all for federally elected officials coming from the private sector where they go back to their 'real' jobs after their term is done or they're term limited out.

Maybe it'd work better with senators and congressmen. This idea with the president might need workshopped more. It seems less likely that the president could realistically go back to his/her job as a farmer or accountant after 4-8 years as president. I guess Jimmy Carter sort of did this....
