Holy Leal

... hate that he starts for my team. I actually said at the end of last season if we are starting Leal and gallo next year we are screwed. Well we are, and we are. I don’t like sucking or being on the bubble. Woodson and Leal and gallo are reasons we suck.
I'm not thrilled about him starting, but probably for a different reason. My reason is that he's not a B1G level starter, but Woodson can apparently neither evaluate talent nor build a roster so he's the best option available. That's entirely on the staff and not his fault we've had this shit year. It's not Gallo's fault, either. You are transferring hate that should be reserved for Woodson onto players who are doing everything they can when asked, even though they don't necessarily have the talent.

Agree mostly. But man I talk to a lot of people and hear a lot of shit on gallo that could be true or could be BS. The way he plays makes me think it’s true. Got a lot of money and his play and effort isn’t what it should be IMO.

You know one thing I never hear about the players? Working out at cook at midnight like Vic. Lots of bar stories tho!!

I love dogs we have puppies that know how to play like dogs, but get slaughtered when the real ones show up.

there we have it. Suspected it and didn't want to say it, so glad you did it for me. Yeah, X's sole issue was an obvious nut punch, and that Hoosier fans never forgave him.
Did I lie? When X did it thuggery when Leal kicks moxy.

I'm tempted to take the easy way out on this and say that's on Woodson too, but at some point the players have to govern themselves. Disappointing that there isn't more off the court leadership.

Gave it that thank god after he didn’t get tossed. I mean…. What were the refs looking at? Airball then a nut kick 🥜 . If that was anyone else for any other team half of you are casting him to hell. Don’t be a hypocrites. That was a horse shit dirty play. He isn’t a good basketball player, he relies on dirty tricks just like every player I hear you whine about.

Ding ding ding. Ya for sure on Woodson we all know that. But our senior leaders that are getting praised on this board I want the F out of here faster than a hellcat.

Leaders work out all night long not go to bars and casinos.

incentive/performance-based NIL would solve that problem in a flash.

You know, the same environment you and I live in each and every day.

If my boss paid me 100% of my potential yearly commission on January 1, I'd be hard-pressed not to go through the motions at times.

100%. Buttttt the true dogs are gonna go hard no matter what. We don’t have any of those, and most teams don’t to be fair. Auburn has like 8 tho. Can’t wait till we get a coach that can recruit real dogs

And Tamar is a dog, he is showing it at mizzou. I think I’m pretty damn good at being able to say who has it and who doesn’t.

Touch some grass man. And maybe attend a basketball coaching clinic, so you're a better evaluator of things.
Forgot to mention the chill statement. That really rubbed me wrong. Like who the **** is this guy that missed the tourney and sucks at bball to tell me to chill??? IU will suck under senior “leaders” like him. My main point is I want this shit gone. All of it. He is a big part.

He stunk it up here and thats all I care about. He was a dog chasing his tail.

I'm sure the kick was intentional, as was the trip by Furst as Leal tried to get up. I doubt it was intentionally a kick to the crotch that was just where it landed. And it didn't even really land, or Furst would have been writhing in pain not throwing his hands up at the referee. Or maybe he wears a cup.

What is it about W Laffy that attracts the odd? Does he have no one in his life to tell him how bad that look is? Edey was weird, I've heard TKR and he's a different bird... just strange how they attract strange. My PU friends are almost all good guys, and Robbie Hummel is as normal as they come, but they've had more than their share of odd. Way more.

He focuses on the wrong things, and the wrong people, consistently. IU's problems are 1) Woodson 2)We don't have elite talent guys that play with the effort that Leal consistently shows

And since Leal is now showing, what many of us already knew, that he is a solid college basketball player... He has to resort to a new criticism, which is all this flopping talk. Missed free throws and airballed threes used to rule the day. He did both of those things in yesterday's game, by the way...and he was still one of the more impactful and productive players in the game...obviously. So, to prove whatever point he feels he has to double and triple and quadruple down on... he adds the flopping part to it.

Leal is a very good basketball player. He won Indiana's Mr Basketball award, and led his BSouth team to an undefeated record his senior year. He leads good teams, when he's allowed to. He's not an elite level basketball player. He's not an All B10 level basketball player. He's not blessed with elite athleticism. But he uses what he has very well. He doesn't "flop" on every single play. But he definitely does it a lot. But he's smart enough about it, that I'm not sure he's ever been called for it.

At a time when the single biggest problem with our program has been consistent effort and energy...Leal is basically the only player the last few years that ALWAYS brings high levels of both.
I don't know how any IU fan could've watched that game yesterday and came away complaing about Anthony Leal. IU does not win that game without him. Not a chance.

wondering how CMW is going to manage MM and team chemistry the rest of this season. There was one very unhappy camper on the bench yesterday. My bet is MM hits the portal 5 seconds after this season ends.

too much pig manure in that part of the state?

Coming from that region, I can tell you first hand, on hot breezy summer days, there's a lot of funk floating around in the air, especially when you get out into the farm areas.

Again, X had lots of "issues" and my recollection was that his was a nut shot while running down court, so he had a little time to calm down. Leal's was an immediate reaction to a guy who just elbowed him in the head and then grabbed/tripped him as he was trying to head down court. I'd have been fine with a foul call, but I'm guessing the ref saw the 'bow and trip and thought it evened out.

You want to make it a racial thing, go ahead, but they were different and there were (lots of) extenuating circumstances with X.

I'd also say one of the differences is that Leal is not terribly gifted and is earning minutes at this level with his play. X often did the opposite. I thought at one point X might even make an NBA roster, but couldn't get past his own head oftentimes.

Sorry but another stellar pick of greatness is number 9 that was on your list. 35% from 2 and 23% from 3 Not being mean just pointing out the stats that are what we should go on.

Team chemistry looked great yesterday with him on the pine. Bench was super active and into it the entire second half from what I saw on the broadcast. If MM doesn't play any D, then he'll sit is something that's long overdue.

it did on the court. But we also didn't have to deal with any foul trouble aside from MR (which is always a given, and Ballo solves that problem).

Sad to think that a 5 star probably drawing close to 7 digit NIL is just sitting there counting the days. We all know they don't focus on defense in the AAU scene but you'd think between his HS coach and CMW they could have made some progress. That's a top 10 recruit providing nothing to you , in the biggest game of the year, in his second season after starting pretty much all of the past 2 seasons. CMW did what he had to do, now...but really needed to get through to him over the summer last year about defense.

I guess, in 4-6 weeks, none of this will matter anyways.

The kid wants to go to the league, but he can't guard his own shadow. Gigantic waste of talent that wasn't developed. I guess he'll stand straight up with his weight on his heels and arms at his side somewhere else next year.

think so? I think he'll look like a different player, and while maybe never a good defender, I doubt he'll look so lost. He's got some tools to work with and supposed desire to get to the league so he should be motivated.

I still remember hearing Bozich talk about MM, and raving about his motor, rebounding and defense. I was pretty psyched after hearing it because I think Bozich usually is pretty fair and accurate and has seen a lot of ball. Couldn't have been more wrong in this case.

I thought he was going to be good before woody got ahold of him. I was high on all of our transfers and Tucker. Woody can’t develop shit. I’m sure Kanaan Will average 10+ next year for Xavier.

Not saying his next coach will turn him in to Aaron Craft...but his footwork, awareness, positioning, are all soooo bad right now. He either has a basketball learning disability, or Coach Woodson and his staff aren't even attempting to teach him correctly.

My best, marginally educated guess... They are "trying" to teach some basic elements of proper defensive fundamentals. As is evidenced by the games every now and then when we do see improvements out of Mack in those areas. What they likely aren't doing, is breaking things down granularly, starting in the summer, and DEMANDING, that they all do things the right way. And then the nail/slot/rim philosophy that Woodson has been so loyal to...I don't think he or his coaches are willing or able to do what it takes to effectively teach it. They probably demonstrate it, yell about it, point it out on film an yell some more, and sit around talking crap about their players in their coaches meetings. But they don't break things down, and have choreographed, and progressive, drills that guarantee the players will be able to pull the philosophy off. Footwork positioning drills, shell drills, read and reaction drills... building defensive and offensive philosophies are like baking a cake. If you don't get all the ingredients right, and put them in at the right times, and mix all of them properly...it's gonna taste like crap in the end.

A coach that does all those things "properly", starts this summer, and makes it a regular part of their practices and expectations...WILL teach Mack to be a serviceable defender...

I wonder how much of MM's issue is him arriving here thinking he was a OAD guy like JHS. Sold on Woodson getting him to the league right away. Didn't really think he had anything to learn, or plan on being here multiple seasons and having to earn playing time.

That could be part of it from MM's perspective. But in the end...its much more simple than that, I suspect. Woodson, and his staff, have failed to effectively teach and demand Mack to play college basketball levels of defense. He's not the only one, many others have struggled with it as well. Some have picked it up better than others. I suspect those are the ones that come by it more naturally than Mack does.

Often times becoming good defensively has a lot to do with doing things you're not naturally good at, or don't "want" to do.
