It wasn't as prevalent in the states until recently. Like everything else Indiana is 6 years behind the coasts. The Russians and Euros have been complaining about our Afghani heroin since we invaded.

Mexicans are also getting into the heroin game due to American growers taking the marketshare of cannabis production.
Its bad enough here in Pittsburgh that cops, emts, and firemen are carrying Narcan due to the number of ODs their seeing.

"Sugar, I think you asked me about peyote, is that right?" (Yes.) "That's an interesting topic . . . why do you ask?"

It's more important for you to learn about her present than she learns about your, um, past."

Cool. Well played.

Uh.... will I be getting a bill for this?

The inspiration for my OP, is a 25 yr old girl that had never smoked even cigarettes, not a drinker, never touched a drug in her life up until 6 months ago. He new boyfriend talked her into it. Now she's in the ER, parents are trying to get custody of the kid, and she lost her job and car .... and is begging for rehab.

In 6 months ?!?!?!
Its rough, left lots of collateral damage in her wake.
That stuff isnt a slipper slope, its a cliff

You are exaggerating and your math is wrong. Cancer is six times more likely to kill you in WV than ANY kind of drug.

Heroin's a problem, but you're still full of shit.
I'm not agreeing with macs math (obviously), but it is a huge problem in West Virginia. It makes the news here in Pitt. Not just in the city, but the rural towns near by. (I can hit the WV panhandle from the west side of Pitt in 30 min)

Oh, well, um . . . let's just leave it that that bill has already been paid in full . . .

. . . it's one you really can't pay back, you can only pay it forward, whenever you can, as best you can, with the best you've got.

That's all.

I did as Mac suggested, and Googled it. WV leads the nation at 33.5 deaths per 100K/year due to drug OD (the vast majority of which, presumably, is heroin). But that's still much smaller than the 191 deaths per 100K/year to cancer in the same state.

Stupid people can sometimes make dumb points that nevertheless contain a grain of truth, you just have to do some digging.

Rehab is a slippery slope, too. Best never to start . . . and avoid like hell anyone who's involved with anything remotely resembling any opiate.

I know TMP and other sophisticated folks here (said, with respect, BTW) will take me to task for sounding like Nancy Reagan . . . but the reality is that some folks can handle a little bit of experimentation, other folks just can't . . . and since the only way to find out either way is to try it, IMHO the only way to stay clean is to stay clear. That's especially true if there's any sort of addictive personality, addiction, alcoholism or even impulsive/compulsive behavior issues in your family or personal history.

I'm generally in favor of letting anyone take whatever drugs they want, but I've never seen anything good come of heroin use.

I am personally biased, as many years ago, my dad had to bury his little brother who was found in a Philly alley with a needle in his arm.

Smoking a little weed, or doing some mushrooms... whatever not a big deal in my book.
I tried a few things back in my day but never thought, Meth? Crack? Heroin? Pills? Never appealed to me. Never thought, I hear so many good things... lets try that

It ain't just how they die that's the real tragedy . . . it's how they live too. At least when they're dead the slide is over . . . for them, even if it's not over for everybody else in their family.

And it's not just heroin . . . I had an 82 year old aunt weigh 73 pounds when she died . . . most of her nutrition for the last 40 years of her life came in the form of bourbon. She was a dynamic personality . . . except for when the alcohol was talking for her.

My cousin ended up getting fired from his rural post delivery route for a DWI issued to him at 9:10 am one Tuesday morning. The irony about that is he was also a former opiates junky, having been injured in a car wreck years before while on his rural mail route . . . 3 drunk guys flew over a hill, blew through the stop sign and T-boned his truck. He's been in severe pain since then . . . and when he kicked the opiates - cold turkey, at home, after he told his wife "no matter what you hear going on through this door until I come out, do not enter this room" - he started drinkin' because he didn't think alcohol was a drug, even though his mother was clearly a alcoholic. Bad idea . . . alcohol is an addictive drug too . . . .

Opioid addicts usually didn't start with Heroin (possible exception of kids who watched Pulp Fiction and think they're being cool, peer pressure, etc.). So if you haven't been addicted to prescription pain killers, you probably couldn't relate - it doesn't make sense. If you had been addicted to opioids, you would totally get it. I know unfortunately second hand (ex-wife) the perils and tragedy of opioid addiction. It's a horrible thing.

Edit: I tell you what scares me is Fentanyl. That shit is extremely powerful and becoming an increasing problem, as the pharmaceutical companies are talking doctors into prescribing it more widely than it's intended, which is for cancer sufferers and extreme pain management only. The more that hits the street, the worse that's going to get, and that stuff is so powerful. And also there is illicit versions of Fentanyl on the street now, and they're cutting it into heroin and people are dying as a result of that. Not enough discussion about Fentanyl.

I only smoke cannabis and am very against concentrates or chemicals. If i wanted to get that messed up i would drink. I have though dabbled with lsd and mushrooms but not anymore. Most people can be responsible and only use in moderation. Addicts not so much.....

Scary thing is, we if the fentanyl genie gets really out of the bottle, we've got bigger problems than Heroin.

I've heard this, and knowing how easily addiction runs in my family, it's one reason I make it a point to be very careful with narcotics. When they gave me enough pills for a week, I made them last almost two. I only take one if I can't walk. Never mix with beer. Basically, my goal is to make sure that taking a painkiller is never fun.

Have you ever heard about any way one can determine in advance whether someone will be "most people" or alternative an addict? I haven't . . . but if you've got some goods on that . . . .

There is a lot of work being done to identify genetic markers for predisposition to addiction. It's looking more and more like one day we'll be able to identify who's more likely to get addicted.

Shorter C&C: "No."

Did I misquote you?

Years ago, a friend of mine and myself would go to this girl's apartment that I worked with. Her boyfriend at the time would ALWAYS get us high. We would smoke massive amounts of weed with him and have a blast. Sometimes we'd go to the movies or a bar, or we'd just hang out there. Soon, she told us her boyfriend had become hooked on heroin and now when we'd come over to smoke weed, he'd always be in the bathroom puking. I mean VIOLENTLY puking. Just didn't seem like it was worth the high, no matter how awesome that high must be.

Later, he went away to Marion Penitentiary for selling heroin and I remember just how unbelievably scared he was to be going away for a long stretch.

Glad I stayed away from it.

Sounds like my ex. It was eating her stomach out from the inside. She wasn't on heroin, but Oxy, etc., whatever she could get. Started out getting hooked on valium, and progressed to more strong meds as her tolerance built up. Trust me, when an opioid addict reaches that point, it stopped being about the high a long time ago.

This is exactly right. A decade ago, or more, painkillers were flooding the market. Oxys were absolutely everywhere on the street. Then the govt said, shit, we've got all these peope hooked on pain killers, let's crack down on doctors and pharmacies, which they have. The addiction didn't go anywhere, and the only way to feed it was with street heroin. And now you've got OD issues that drawf whatever was happening back in the pill popping days.

I saw it first hand with a coworker. He was in a bad accident, really messed up his arm/hand, requiring surgeries and this awful looking hand cast/apparatus that he probably wore for 6 months.

I'd see him in the halls at work maybe once every week or two, and you could tell he was just getting more and more strung out. Fast forward about 18 months and he's dead from a heroin overdose. Good, smart, young guy, business degree from Purdue, good paying career. Think he was about 30.

I think drugs have done some good things for us. I really do. And if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favor. Go home tonight. Take all your albums, all your tapes and all your CDs and burn them. 'Cause you know what, the musicians that made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years were rrreal ****ing high on drugs. The Beatles were so ****ing high they let Ringo sing a few tunes.

It's not.....it's THAT bad. I'm not exaggerating and my math isn't wrong. The I-64 corridor between Hunington and Charleston, West Virginia seems to be the hardest hit area. Google search it. Even Obama is involved. Heroin is killing more people in West Virginia than some Cancers.
There's no effing way. If he works a normal 5 nights per week, that's 1,300 working days in 5 years. That would be more than 6 ODs per night, EVERY night for 5 years. No. Way.

I've had good times on drugs. I've had bad ones too. Look at this haircut.
Gotta love Bill Hicks. The LSD story was gold.

There are just huge differences in what we call 'drugs' though. There isn't a whole lot of creativity that comes out while you're chasing the dragon...except creative ways to find more.

While there may not have been warning signs from alcohol/drug use, if the bold statement is true, may be a good chance she has a history of unhealthy relationships. Some people either will do or put up with a lot of messed up shit to keep up a bad relationship.

Just two or three weeks ago a friend of mines son OD'ed on heroin and died. The kid was 26.

eh... heroine has been around for a while. Joplin, Hendrix, and others didn't die from weed use.

Man that sucks.

Edit: I've resisted talking much about my ex's situation in this thread because it's still very painful and raw, three years since our divorce. But she nearly died. She did actually try to kill herself once, which was the impetus for me to get her into inpatient treatment. She quickly got herself checked out of that, and that was the nail in the coffin of our relationship. But I could tell you horror stories. I spend several nights out at 2-3-4 am looking for her, along with police friends of mine, as she was out buying and using from street sources after all of her Rx options had dried up. And it all started from an addiction to Valium from a legit back problem she had.

And I'll say one more thing on this subject, then I'm done. Phuck Narcotics Anonymous. That is a bunch of BS. There is SO much bad that happens in that cult that outweighs any good that comes out of it. I've seen it first hand. If anyone here has a loved one that is struggling with an addiction, and they have any vulnerabilities in their personality/life situation - steer them away from that. It's full of predators. Get them professional help. Phuck that BS.

/out.

oh....I guess you were the toxicologist in the studio measuring which drug made them creative and which drug didn't.

Carry on then....
You obviously are clueless about opioid addiction. Which is perfectly expected if you haven't been there, or been deeply effected by it. No worries - that's good for you!
