I think the analysis is far simpler.
Why are the comments and message areas of electronic news media, message boards, Twitter, Facebook and similar outlets so full of lies, libel, insults, crap and other garbage? Pretty simple -- they have immunity.
Traditional print newspapers and magazines have just about always published letters to the editor and other third party content from the public (including direct quotations in news stories) because their readers like to read comments from other readers. However, because those newspapers and magazines were always legally liable for the content of those third-party contributions, many people don't realize they always screened and still do screen the content of letters to the editor etc., just as they always screened defamatory remarks from their reports of statements by the subjects of their interviews -- they were liable. Newspapers and magazines simply did not publish anything similar to what people get away with on the internet.
What form did this take? Well, newspapers often require each letter to the editor to include the name, address and phone number of the sender. If a sender got carried away and included obscene or defamatory content in his/her letter, he might well get a phone call from the newspaper asking if he minded if the newspaper published the rest of the letter without the offensive content.
The current state of internet lies, libel, insults, crap and other garbage is surely related directly to the federal immunity given to these outlets. Only rich people like Curt Schilling have found even a partial solution to internet abusers by investigating and identifying them:

I just searched "Elon Musk Sexual Predator" on Google and found exactly three stories about it.
In none of them did the media accuse him of being a sexual predator, a flight attendant did.
The 3 outlets were Newsweek, Daily Mail and Business Insider.
Supposedly, he exposed himself according to a friend of a friend while at Space X. The story made waves shortly after he announced he was voting pub.
He must have known one party would accept that behavior. Y'all love the alphas who "expose" the libs.
