Darian DeVries Thoughts

Maybe Dolson went after bigger fish and he didn’t get a nibble? I know it’s hard for some on here to believe but the beloved basketball program is not the desirable job that it once was.
He had to settle for Woodson, what has changed that would make coaches come knocking on Dolson’s door?
Chris Beard knocked loudly

Same. Maybe I'll just follow McCollum and Beard's teams. They are winners.
In all seriousness, I will likely not watch a single IU game in the coming year.....my apathy is at an all time high and this was the last chance to recover it. Off to a new team. Good luck everyone.
I’m packing away my Dads IU Letterman’s jacket and ring as we speak. All IU action photos of him playing are coming down today too. IU basketball is now back where it was the day they fired RMK in my household. I was having serious considerations of setting up a scholarship at IU in my Dads name and funding it by donating the majority of his estate… ( retired as senior VP at John Hancock ) that’s over too. I will be reaching out to Dolsen to give a piece of my mind. What an incompetent joke for the last 30 years

Just way too much smoke this time and it’s not from the " iu insiders". I just read one claiming we had stevens up until Saturday and he suddenly changed his mind. Give me a break the fiction some of these guys tell is unreal. I guess anything to protect their trolling. Suddenly changed his mind he had four years to think about it. LOL!
Wishful thinking.

I warned this forum about this. Dolson was never in the know. He had tunnel vision and thought he had him locked up.

Every hiring cycle is the same. I actually think many of the rumors are always true, that is if you listen to IU. Our admin never has their pulse on reality and does a late casting of a net and scramble.

It seems like he's a guy that's largely flown under the radar. But there seems to be some smoke on him being the guy...so lets discuss him.

I think he's probably a solid choice, but there are a few concerns I'd have with him.

1. How much of his recent success was attributed to his son? They seemed to fall off a fair bit when Tucker got hurt this year. That isn't abnormal, he's really good, and most college programs fall off when their best player goes down...but if you take his last 3 years at Drake away, he doesn't have a lot to go off of.

2. He never won the Valley regular season championship. He won 20+ games every year, and fielded really good Valley level teams, but he never won the league.

3. Mixed results in post season tournaments. On one hand, he won some Valley tournaments, which is good. But then, he hasn't won any NCAA tournament games. The success in the Valley tournaments is probably a good sign with respect to IU...as it shows he's able to get them playing well, and beating, peer opponents, in March. IU's peer opponents, hopefully, will be top 15-20 level teams every year. So if he can beat his peers at IU, probably will mean some NCAA success on top of B10 success.

I'd MUCH rather have McCollum than DeVries. I'd much rather have guys like McCasland, Beard, May...obviously some of the whales. But I think I'd rather have DeVries than Brownell types. But that is more of a "feeling" than anything else. I haven't committed really any time studying his philosophies, offenses, defenses, etc... Has anyone on here?
My son is the video replay official at UE. He has seen DeVries many times. He mentioned DeVries early but speculation was if DeVries left WVU it would be for Iowa as many expected McCaffrey to be fired. My son set his hopes on McCollum with DeVries likely going somewhere else.

My opinion is he is a good college coach. Same question as Archie, can he recruit? Can he be the elite college coach we want. He did beat Gonzaga and played UL close after we got killed by those two teams in the same tournament in his first year. It tells me he had a better team early in his first year than Woodson had after 4 years.

I don't know that much about DeVries, but McCollum seems to have a little more swagger, possibly. I think we need someone who can "wow" people to IU, possibly convince Mullins to change his mind on UConn. I don't put a whole lot into rumors but when they start firing off from all directions.......
DeVries built the program that McCollum was able to coach this year. In a league that often omnly gets one NCAA bid, DeVries took Drake to 3 NCAA t hasn't any success in the tournament, so that remains to be seen how that will turn out.

I'm going to wait and see. The first step is to build a roster. Sisley has posted a positive statement. I would guess he has reached out to Trent and will be meeting him in the next few days. I'll feel better when we have retained our two recruits and start add to the roster.

The negative people need to chill. Bob Knight wasn't always the coach we knew.

Ya know, i've seen more than one person post similar sentiment regarding Drake/McCollum/DeVries so I decided to look into that and after a cursory glance I don't think it's the case Bud. This year's 24/25 McCollum led Drake team is nearly 100% turned over from last year's 23/24 Devries led team. DeVries didn't leave anything behind when he left Drake, this year's Drake team is all McCollum.

Who knows, DeVries may end up a good get for us, but man it sure doesn't seem like it. To me it seems like more of the same.

IU has had good teams and never won the BG10 Tournament. There’s something to be said for consistency

And you’re not the boss so you don’t need to make smart ass comments. Internet made everyone a smart ass 🙄
So you were OK with McCollum but not DeVries? Goodman says Dolson talked with McCollum a couple times, and ended up at DeVries. Maybe McCollum took his name out, but I sort of doubt it. DeVries wanted IU over IA, so I would assume McCollum would too. I like what I've heard overnight on After Dark and other podcasts: tireless worker, who will get shooters and who's team will play D. Had his team legit qualified for the tournament with one of his 2 best players playing 8 games, and that guy is coming with him. Everyone loved SD after hiring Cig, I'd say give it a couple weeks and see what the guy does. He has the opportunity right now to make a lot of hay between our roster, WVU's, their recruits and the players who can enter the portal from teams losing their coaches, and a big NIL bankroll to play with. I think like UK and Lville, the roster dominoes are going to start to fall pretty quickly.

As much as many of us set our sights on McCollum....it just may be that McCollum passed on IU....like so many other coaches have. We aren't the end all, be all.....not even close.
