CEO of United Healthcare gunned down in midtown Manhattan

I think it's much more likely that he got involved with the mob or slept with some guy's wife or something like that.

Revolutions are fun, but they don't happen very often. Crime and jealousy happen all the time. That's probably what happened here.

An insurance CEO making $10m/yr... Don't think he's getting mob tied up.

Jealous spouse of someone he was banging or disgruntled employee... Maybe.

He was married, but apparently not happily so, as he lived separately from his wife. Or maybe that is happily married...

Sad. He had it all

My wife is out to dinner with other wives of my golf buddies tonight.

Going to come home loaded after complaining about all being golf widows. My only saving grace is the other guys play even more than I do so thinking I may score some points.

Or possibly just being overly optimistic
You’re not doing this right.

You knew this was scheduled. You didn’t buy her some flowers and a piece of jewelry a few days prior? You might have gotten your buddies in hot water but you would have been gold at home.

JFC, do I have to do everything around here?

That’s not a real blonde.

100 percent agree. If you want to lose faith in fellow humans, read the responses on Twitter and even mainstream news articles to the shooting.

Jokes, he had it coming, etc. We've lost our way.
It’s the victim/oppressor mentality that is so pervasive now.

This guy was perceived to be oppressing people so it’s ok to cheer his murder.

This is where we’re headed. And it’s only getting worse.

There are people all over Twitter saying if you see anything or know anything that might help solve this murder, keep it to yourself.

Yeah and that is where a bit of my "off with their heads" thoughts come from. There is quite a bit more cheerleading of this than I believe has been the norm.

Some say it's a division of the publicly-traded entity. Maybe it's a personal attack unrelated to the healthcare system. But early reports are that it was a targeted hit. I'm sure facts will come out that enhance or knock down the significance of this event. But if it's related to his official role, I'd say this is where things trend when systems are so deeply broken, when institutions are set up for purposes only aimed at taking money, when the common good is left in the dust, and when more of the population is rendered powerless and facing unreasonable outcomes.
United Health was under a secretive DOJ inquiry into monopolistic practices. Only a few inner circle knew this. It was not known by investors. Victim had sold almost 1/3 of his stock and cashed $15million. Those investors who didn't know lost Big$ when media revealed the DOJ investigation.
If some guy fvcks another out of $Millions, it could get shaky...

Twitter/X is a cesspool. A bot factory. In a decade it will be Myspace unless Elon gets a grip

I mean, it isn't just Twitter/X. I think people really have a beef with the healthcare complex in this country and that could be problematic. If we continue to see the kind of civilizational breakdown I believe we have seen over the past few decades then the angry sentiments being expressed online could be acted upon with more frequency. Not all of these are bots.

This may be something not related to claims denial but it has ripped open a festering scab. When populism is gaining traction on the left and right, it speaks to some structural issues not being addressed.

While I agree with everything said about the inappropriateness of the awful things said online about this situation, is the problem more simple? Is it just culturally accepted that being awful online is OK? People are so shitty online in ways that they wouldn’t be in face to face situations. It’s everywhere all the time. Now, we have generations who have grown up with nothing else but these terrible online interactions. Base level civility has left the building.

Reports this morning that the bullets were etched with the words Deny, Dismiss, and Depose. Sounds like the perp wanted to make a statement about how claims are dealt with.

Also @BadWakeboarder, this guy echos a lot of the thoughts you had yesterday when this broke:

Yep. It’s actually delay deny defend. I guess he replaced defend with depose. Depose means to remove someone from office. Which he did.

All of healthcare is busted. From care to coverage. Desperately needs reform/revision

There are two parts to this. First is the person who writes stupid and insulting stuff. Second is the person who reads it. You wrote about the first. We have people who bitch about trolls, require trigger warnings, and think ignore buttons are important. All of that signals a fertile ground in which a-holes can operate. In sum, if we’d all be Less prone to be outraged, triggered, and insulted, the internet would be better.

For sure. People need thicker skin. We have a subset of people who have their antenna out seeking opportunities to be offended. That doesn’t mean that assholes should be awful humans online.

That's a violation of masculine rights, sir. Deserves a steep kangaroo court fine.

I disagree. Think it's trash. Used to really like it now filled with weirdos and bots and dildo ads.

I'm with Jamie, I like it better too.

And I have to say that I'm glad that they aren't busy banning and suspending and all that. The Community Notes method of dealing with BS is far better than how they used to handle it. Rather than removing the BS, it bolts a correction to it....and I like that it's done by other posters rather than an opaque group of sensors, too.

Bots have certainly been a problem, off and on. They're always there to some extent -- and that's nothing new for the platform. Right now, they don't seem to bother me nearly as much. A year ago or so, it was a Bot Plague.

I think that the online talk can (and sometimes does) plant ideas in the heads of less stable people who don't take it as "just talk".

Not saying that the revolution is upon us but things that appear to be small and only involve a few people have blown up into much bigger things throughout our history. Most people are not going to act on their anger. That usually holds true in relatively stable societies but even they can go off the rails if the underlying bitterness is widespread enough and the right spark kicks things off.

Just another warning flag sitting out there that we aren't as steady as we were 30 years ago. We aren't on the verge of Syria or anything stupid like that, but we have problems that are festering and aren't being addressed by our "ruling class". That cannot go on in perpetuity without some real consequences.

I don’t get the FB hate. Mine has zero bots. No political. Just soccer buds posting what they’re doing and a handful of horrible wives who tag the husbands who are my friends when they post. Very annoying behavior indeed

FB is for the olds. Such as you.

* I’ve proudly never had a FB account. One of my greatest achievements.

I don't know about that, but I woke up to a facebook post from someone I went to high school ranting about how the Beatles are talentless and overrated. I hope Elon and Vivek can dial back that kind of fake news.

I like it for events too. Reminders. #impopular

That's the only thing I miss about not having FB. I have some family that only send invites through FB and or messenger.

My wife gets those instead, which is okay by me. I've always got a way out since I didn't see them myself.

Not sure what the hell you are searching, but ads are tailored my man.

There used to be far more CCP and Russian bots than there are today. There are still plenty, but I've found the quantity to be lower.

For me, the game changer was the Ukraine war. Twitter's ability to deliver news and video hours before mainstream news is incredible. The platform has gotten better at quickly identifying fake shit too, given CN. It's far from perfect, but I like it more now than I did.

Also, following some of the IU football things are great. The AD has done a great job enhancing its media game.

It's the fvcking ads bro. Every other post is an ad for some bullshit I don't need (e.g., fake raybans, sketchy nutrition supplements). Not only that, but the "relevant" feed or whatever they call it, is no longer relevant. It's full of clowns that I have no interest in seeing anything about and post their "woe is me" bullshit.

It went from a great platform in my early 20s to one of my least used apps. The only reason I'm still on is for the old people (*looks at McM*) that want to follow my kids growing up. Most 45 and under are only active on Insta these days.
