Braden Smith “I didn’t watch Purdue”

Jimbo I’m worried for you if they make a FF this year - what then?
I'm not worried about it at all: it hasn't happened since 1980. We've all seen this movie before. It literally hasn't happened in my lifetime.

The day Edey learns how to play from more than 5 feet from the bucket in the NBA and Smith gets drafted will never happen. Smith couldn't hold Coverdale's jock, and Coverdale didn't get drafted.

But hey you have Cupps and he’s Smith but with a better basketball IQ - you can’t make this stuff up

Yep we did but the last time a 16 beat a one before that - Virginia - they won it all the next year - you had better hope history doesn’t repeat itself

I would love to hear IU fans perspective on Painter’s development of players - Edey, Smith, Carson Edwards, Ivey, etc. Guy knows what he’s doing. Now he’s getting higher ranked players - look out

It’s interesting because Purdue fans are worried they will shit the bed again but IU fans who aren’t in the tourney are worried they won’t. I’d rather be playing in the tourney then a rival who is just rooting for Purdue to lose

I've been aware of PU my entire life, and PU doing anything in the NCAA's is at the bottom of the list of things I'm worried about. Death, taxes, and PU crapping the bed in March: the constants in life. I'd rather have a coach other than Woody or Painter that can do something in the NCAA's. The Gene/Matt system just doesn't work in March.

Catchings is a good get, but he is #32. Painter has brought in similarly ranked kids before.

Been saying it for months now… we could easily get Smith to IU with a bag of cash. It should be Woodson’s top priority in the offseason.
The top priority should be getting a coach who knows what the hell he is doing. In such a scenario, the kid would regress under Woody.

I thought Woodson offered a boat load of guards last year and stuck out? Come on, you guys have CJ Gunn, Cupps and Leal, they are all better than Smith right, I mean if IU can offer and get anyone they offer with all that NIL! I just can't figure out how IU can get anyone they want but yet can not get out of the bottom of the BT? What in the he$$ are we missing?
We will find out how good Branden Smith is next season

All wrong. You've got your own fantasy built I can see that.

Our fans are 0% of the problem. They don't make the coach hires. All they do is support the team. We lead the B1G in attendance this year despite sucking. IU fans gave us a crowd advantage in NYC and a 50/50 crowd in Auburn's back yard in ATL. We donate a lot. All of this despite being pretty darn bad for a quarter century.

The fanbase is pretty patient. Crean got his three years to totally rebuild (eight B1G wins in total in three years). Woody won one tournament game in two years and he had great support until he collapsed this year to ranked #100 with no sign of improvement.

Our fans had zero say in the Woodson hire or any other hire. The Woody hire was for and driven by Quinn. Everyone knows this.

You don't like IU fans, so you want to blame them because that's fun. You want IU to go away so you make up an apathy narrative that isn't there either. Dumb.
If not for the fan base there would be zero chance this program gets their mojo back.

Can’t imagine any other program having the crap we have had since 2000 still sell out every game and show up in the numbers we do.

It is very different in Btown (and the rest of our state )
Exactly, think about Arizona at Vegas, Kansas, Auburn at Atlanta and Ucon in NY. IU fans showed up large.

You are one bitter stupid person

Lol. There's no mythical IU, either. It's all in your fanbase's head. There was Knight. That was IU. Knight's gone, and the fanbase hasn't detached themselves fully from that. Still.

In the last 80 years (1943-2023), when looking at who IU is without Knight, they are a 558-446 (56%) winning ball club. That is the same as a 17-13 per year average.

Only two coaches in that time (outside of Knight) have beaten that average.

One was Kelvin Sampson.

The other?

Coach Mike Woodson. And Woodson is a dead man walking.

So the question is, who is IU, really? IU without Knight. History says they are what they were before Knight, and are what they have been after Knight.

Probably no one remembers the Bruce McCracken days, and the Knight era has another decade—maybe two tops—before that era is forgotten as well.

So yeah, the clock is ticking. IU is much closer to being who they have always been without Knight than recreating the success they had with Knight—one of the greatest coaches to ever coach the game.

Every coach since continues to live in his shadow and probably will until those who remember him are dead and gone.

IU fans think they are Knight and want Knight results, but they haven't realized that finding the best of a generation isn't that easy.

I simply believe IU would have a better time reinventing themselves than trying to recreate the results of a legendary coach. But good luck convincing the fanbase of that.

P.S> what was Crean's last 6 years? 138-69 (eg 66.7% win percentage). Dude was a tool, but he was performing well for who IU historically is.
No, no one remembers the Bruce McCracken days. No arguing that one.

Ugly jerseys. Boring arena. “Defense lives here”. Paint Crew and their silly hand motions. Creepy Purdue Pete. Weird train.

Who the wants to watch that? 😬
Matt Painter doesn’t ask kids he recruits if they grew up watching Purdue. He does ask them if they would like a scholarship and those in the current program that said yes now wear two B1G rings.

With bigger egos ... yea, watch out... fwiw- Painter is probably much better off with the high floor low ceiling players that he's been getting. He's a master dumpster diver and the dumpster has been kind to him. Why change what's working?

IU has not sold out every game this year!

IU has a very high potential four star 1/2 on the bench rehabbing.

If you are going to spend your days here focused on IU...at least do a bit of homework before puking up the crap you do.

Watching the highlights this morning.
I see he went with the Curry night night and ...The I've got the ring !
I like him !..But be careful there Mr.Smith... They'll be a hot gaurd in the tournament that brings it at you. ..ie.(KSU Nowell)
We will find out next year.

You all keep wishing this was true.

To actually quantify this, look at social media, which skews towards younger people. IU has over 1 million X followers, PU has 157K. Not close.

Purdue has a had a great run here and I don’t see it slowing down much. But now their fans want literally everything to be pro-Purdue, and it isn’t.
Most social media users are over age 20. Only 12.7% are from the age group of 12-19. 53% of users are age 20-39 which means MOST users are no longer in High School. IU having more followers doesn't mean anything when it comes to recruiting.

Purdue is small and strange.

I don’t know why you all beg for validation from IU fans over here.

Purdue is a very good university. As good as IU and better in some areas. Purdue has a good coach and a good basketball team right now.

Purdue grads are so badly damaged emotionally that this is what they do.

I would truly feel sorry for them but they make that ever so difficult.

I don't understand the "yikes" part. I grew up watching Pitt basketball. I never watched a Purdue game until I was a freshman.
As an aside, Pitt has come on strong in the second half of the season. Their second 20 win season in a row. Not sure how things shake out, but they'll be a tough out in the tournament.

From the school that wears "clown pants"LOL
I see that the pu fans have adopted the "clown" look as well in old urine and black. Fortunately the mfgs were able to get the XXL sizes to accomodate the students.
