Batten down the hatches gang

I'm beginning to think I got the rank of Goat wrong. He's not the Colonel, he's the Captain:

Love that movie. Alright gang. Congrats Dems. Hardly the tsunami expected for us. Time to check out and work in advance of the World Cup. I’ll place this as a reply to this poster and see some of you again in a few weeks in the INVITATION only soccer thread for the wc. Cheers!

No way you're calling it a night this early. You met some aspiring actress in the Marriot lounge, didn't you?

Stating the obvious, even with Republicans picking up seats it hasn't been a good night for Trump and Trump candidates.

Compare that to Desantis blowing out his race and sweeping all races in Florida. The quip I thought I heard was this will be the first time in Florida's history where there is no opposition party in major state government.

Yikes. Is Florida now called Flurkey or Flungary?

The obvious point is this is a wet dream scenario for the right in Florida.

This along with Trump candidates struggling is going to put a tremendous pressure on the machine to push Trump aside for Desantis.

Trump ain't gonna like that.

Second point, looks like Boebert is at real risk. That would restore my faith a little bit.

It does feel like Wokeism and Trumpism took a beating tonight.
Did wokeism take a beating yet? I haven't seen any signs of a big backlash against progressive candidates yet. Not saying you're wrong, of course. I just haven't seen it. But then I got home late and started drinking fast, so...

I think the Dems that have held contested seats are…..sober and sane. If Frisch hold off Boebert he’s another you’d call the new blue dog.

I'll say this. He's an odd politician. Can't win with him. Can't win without him. Though he's almost certainly 2-2 if not for COVID. Desantis/Tulsi 2024? Is that best for all? Maybe. It's possible that there are enough Dems and Inds willing to burn everything down and make their lives worse intentionally just to not have Trump. We'll see.

I think he was waiting to see how the election goes before announcing. This could definitely affect his decision.

Although, getting a majority in the House is a pretty good consolation prize.

It has to at least give him pause, right? His advisors are going to tell him that this night wasn't good for him. Will he listen? Or will he grasp at the exceptions and develop tunnel vision? "Vance won, I can win!"

Yeah if progs continue to struggle (Fetterman, Barnes who I like but looks like will take the L vs Johnson) the Dem machine is going to, let's say re-evaluate, especially in light of the relative successful campaigns of the ones who are trying to appeal to the middle and understand that going further left when the other party is going further right leaves a decent sized chunk of the bell curve.

Tim Ryan, although losing in an impossible race in Ohio, ran a masterful race and closed the gap significantly by being an everyday dude, getting out of the echo chamber and at least trying to reach the other side and by out masculining (is that a word) the opponent who's supposedly running on masculinity.

I thought this was pretty brilliant. Sure it's pandering but a big part of his campaign was to out 'masculine' JD Vance.

The other line I liked was Ryan pointing out Trump said JD kissed his ass. Followed by Ohioans aren't ass kissers, we're ass kickers.

Mainly he appealed to being a basic guy who's pissed at the extreme. He still lost but closed the gap so, he resonated.

Gives me some hope.

Can't find the debate but he did put out this campaign ad.

Obvious notice of him sitting at the bar with a beer basically calling Vance a bitch.

Not everyone can do this but I did like the 'out masculine the Maga' angle because we are all aware how much 'masculinity' is a part of the movement.

We really need a bunch of posters to come around and explain their thoughts about Oz losing. I thought it was a guarantee that he'd win.
Carpetbagger. Trump coming to town hurt him with Philly collar county voters, which usually decide their elections. Fetterman is really well liked in PA, and his stroke is the only reason it was close.

Second this.

McM gets on my ass for speaking about Fetterman in a positive light but, he's a unique kind of politician and is kind of a PA personality, at least he's well known as a PA politician.

Running off that in-state popularity was the obvious play against Oz.

If you have not seen Ronny's speech last night do so. He was clearly warming up for the big stage.

"Florida is where wokism comes to die"

Trump just needs to go away.
I have siad from day one that several Pubs held their noses and rode his coat tails through the mid terms and will now distance themselves. Not all, but several more. He will still have the Greene and BoBo nut job types.

Disagree. If democracy is in danger take steps to ameliorate fears people have, real or fictionalized. Perception matters more than reality. And yes apply common sense. If someone is in the military let them vote absentee. If someone is disabled mail it in. But for everyone else make it a national holiday(s) and go vote in person. If Dems posit "Democracy is in danger" then don't be lazy asses. A little inconvenience doesn't hurt anyone if it's important. Close the schools and vote in person. My kids' school is closed today
Do you think a national holiday for election day is going to shut down fast food, grocery, convenience and a whole host of other retail establishments where a lot of working class people work? Sure, your white collar folks and their hourly folks that work for them will get the day off, but a large part of the middle and lower class would still have to work.

Whatever the opposite of coat tails is what Trump provided.

Call it the 'Trump Tax'.... if you were seen as a Trumper first, you underperformed

That's been obvious for a long time. But hate to break it to you....he won't go.
The good news is he only has one more election he can f%#k up. Putting Trump aside, the economy and inflation are going to continue to be issues and grind on people more the next two years. I know a lot of Democrats are gleeful over the results, but the reality is the country is pretty evenly split. Republicans are in much better shape than they were post Bush, when they were a complete shit show.

Coat tails is Probably not the best term to use. They rode his narrative to get through the middies and now will begin to distance and try to revise their own history.

I agree with that. But that's a more difficult solution. You're asking to change peoples' behaviors and perceptions. Easier to fix those things that give rise to the skepticism.

You're asking to limit how people can vote simply because other people don't understand how voting/elections work.

Maybe let people have a national holiday so they can attend a class that teaches them all about how elections work.
