"
during their last coaching searches" . . . let's see.
UNC finally lured Williams back to Chapel Hill because of connections to Carolina - not money. He turned the job down because
he didn't want to leave his players in 2000
From the article:
"And Roy was just as emotional as he could be and he said, 'You know, Dick, I just can't do it. I promised my players and I've just got to stay with that"
Three years later, Williams
was close to turning down Carolina again before taking the job.
From the article:
"Williams said he twice went to the phone to tell the Tar Heels he was staying in Kansas. Each time, he changed his mind. Williams said he made the decision while flying back to Kansas on Sunday night, and told his players at a meeting yesterday."
And money? Also from the article:
"Williams was apparently North Carolina's only candidate.
He agreed to an eight-year deal with a base salary of $260,000, with bonuses and a media package that will raise his compensation considerably. Final details of the contract have yet to be worked out."
Big spenders down there on Tobacco Road . . .
Kansas? They spent a bunch of money to lure Self to Lawrence?
Not hardly.
From the article:
“Self's first contract was $1.1 million a year for five years”.
To further emphasize how much of a factor money was to Self,
he turned down an $1 million offer from Nebraska while still at Tulsa.
Finally, UK
After pushing Tubby Smith out the door in 2007, the Wildcats coveted Billy Donovan. But Donovan – who was making $1.7 million annually with the Gators – turned the Wildcats down. They hired
Billy Clyde Gillespie instead – for 2.3 million. You would have to believe UK offered AT LEAST that much to BD. Two years later when BCG flamed out, Donovan nixed the idea of him going to Lexington
before the job was even offered. He knew how unrealistic the expectations in Lexington were.
From the article:
"Donovan didn't even let it get that far this time around. His statement was released
minutes after Barnhart announced Gillispie's dismissal."
So they hired John Calipari - and spent big bucks because no one else was interested. Cal has had a lot of success with the OAD strategy while getting the top kids, but has had his recruiting fall off from getting the top players that were vital to that success. Let's see how much UK - for the money they're paying Cal - tolerates the OAD if UK doesn't make a Final Four this year or next.
So you want to send Archie packing 1-1/2 years in? And then have to pay $50-60 million for a coach who
may win you a title? How do you KNOW Archie might not be that guy - because we're struggling right now? Here is one of the comments from the 10-year Kansas article linked above:
"When they announced that Bill Self was the new coach of KU, I distinctly remember thinking " Really?
This is the best that The University of Kansas can do? This guy should be coaching at Northwestern or Marquette or somewhere (no offense to those teams but..............)"
I was really ticked off, thinking that they had hired the first guy who raised his hand and said " yeah, I'll take that job."
Good dang thing I wasn't in charge of hiring back then."
"Let's spend money . . ." lol
