Taxation without representation

SCOTUS ruled in favor of the government against a resident of Puerto Rico who wrongly accepted SSI benefits for years until the feds decided he owed them some $30K in mistaken payments.

SCOTUS' ruling is absolutely correct. Congress is not required to implement the same tax/benefit scheme in the territories that it does in the states. And it's true that Puerto Ricans are exempt from several federal taxes, including the all-important income tax.

But they do pay other federal taxes, including the FICA tax that ostensibly funds the SSI that they are not eligible for. I wonder if it is high time for us to simply bring the insular tax scheme into line with the stateside one. (Or, failing that, should Puerto Rico just be a state already?)

Friday Recruiting Notebook - April 22

Indiana received a big commitment this week with five-star forward Malik Reneau.

At 6-foot-9, he adds size and fills an immediate need in the front court, adding depth, skill and versatility. Regardless of the decision Trayce Jackson-Davis makes, it was a needed move to add another front court player.

Some notable quotes Reneau had RE: Indiana and his visit:

On IU's pitch: "The different ways coach Woodson is going to use me to help create for the team (was big). Coach Woodson is going to use me in pick and roll, pick and pop. Isolation from the perimeter, in the low and mid post and even starting fast breaks off a rebound."

On playing with Jalen Hood-Schifino: "Playing with Jalen, you know everybody else on the court is going to bring it because he wants to win and elevate everybody game. He’s just a winner I and love playing with people that do want it takes to win."

Goals at IU: "My individual goals are getting stronger and shoot the three ball better. My team goals is winning the Big Ten and a National Championship."

For more info on Reneau, here is a breakdown of his game from Rivals national writer Rob Cassidy:

"Reneau has long been a high-IQ prospect with incredible physical tools and a knack for passing out of the post. His rise in the rankings this summer was based on his development from a skill perspective, particularly on the offensive end... saw him show an increased ability to create his own shot and display more physicality against elite level competition on both the EYBL circuit and at the NBAPA Top-100 Camp. Reneau impacts games on the glass even when his shot isn’t going. At his best, he’s a well-rounded box score stuffer that is a threat to post a double-double, At his worst, he’s a steadying presence that will help his team win on the glass and by always making the right choices with the ball in his hands. He has the size and the skill set to play major minutes."

Indiana made the signing official yesterday (Thursday).

Indiana now turns its attention to the transfer market and on the wing.

Wichita State transfer Dexter Dennis visited Indiana Monday and Tuesday this week for an official visit and then Clemson midweek. He has no more visits scheduled at the moment.

Dennis brigs an immediate upgrade at the wing position as a slasher and tremendous defensive player. The main knock people have against him is his shooting ability. He shot 40 percent as a freshman from three with 1.5 made 3s per game. He has made 1.6 made 3s per game for his career. He shot 34 percent in both his sophomore and junior seasons and then dipped to 29.7 percent last season.

Indiana wants Dennis and Dennis' interest in Indiana seems to be there as well. His visit went well and I think he ends up making a decision sooner than later -- what that means, who knows because things change in seconds in recruitments.

The second visit this week is currently taking place now with West Virginia guard Sean McNeil. McNeil is the shooter out of the two, shooting 27 percent for his career from three. He makes 1.7 3s per game for his career. McNeil went 33 percent his first year to 38.8 percent in his second year and then 36.8 last season. McNeil is not a defensive stopper like Dennis.

McNeil has a top six of Indiana, Louisville, Ohio State, Cincinnati, Virginia and Texas Tech. Early on the talk was Ohio State, Cincinnati and Louisville as the three teams to watch but after postponing his Cincinnati visit, things look to move more to OSU. Louisville and Indiana. Obviously getting him on campus is a big part and anything can happen after that.

I keep hearing from multiple sources that Louisville may be the team out front and are expected to get the final visit.

Out of the two transfers, Dennis seems to be in more of a 'decision soon' mindset while McNeil is going to take his time most likely, with other visits still to take. Because of that, that may give Dennis the upper hand in terms of finding a spot on IU's roster.

More on McNeil:

The final Rivasl150 came out for the class of 2022 and Indiana's class finishes at No. 13.

It has two five-stars, one four-star and one three-star.

Here is a breakdown of where each signee finished and scouting notes on each one.

It isn't in schools

It isn't in schools so much that every major textbook company decided to include it in math questions. 40% of the textbooks had to be tossed because they focused on something other than math (or moved the focus).

Are Dennis AND McNeil both a possibility at this point?

Its very smoky when it comes to a Dennis commitment here soon.

And yet, McNeil is still visiting this weekend.

That seems to indicate its at least possible that Woody would take both of them?

To quote my 12 year old daughter..."That's awkward"???

Obviously decisions could have already been made that none of us know about...which would eliminate the awkwardness. But with all the information we have, at this point, commitments from both Dennis and McNeil would get very uncomfortable.

Maybe not worth discussing until it happens. Neither has committed at this point. But this is a message board...and I'm bored...its been almost a week since we had a departure or commitment!

Desmond Bane-Unrated

Desmond Bane put on a shooting exhibition last night in the Memphis victory over the TWolves. He played high school ball at a small Catholic school in Richmond and was completely unrated as a senior even though he averaged 30 ppg graduating in 2016. There are still good shooters in Indiana that are overlooked and not rated highly, or at all, by the rating services. I hope Coach Woodson's staff doesn't just join the bandwagon and let the rating services dictate recruiting targets.

If you have a fan base that overrates the ranking services then politically the easiest thing to do but not optimal for W/L success of the program.
