A Golden Dome: can the US afford it and is it even needed?

Seems like a boondoggle of SDI-like proportions. The USA wasted hundreds of billions (when those numbers meant something) on this type of craziness in the 1980s. Are we really going to waste trillions on another attempt now?

Trump's speech and the Democrats Behavior

Trump was Trump--he was what I expected him to be. Says a lot of stuff, hard to get a handle on everything, but predictable.

DID NOT LIKE AT ALL a notable portion of the democrats behavior during the speech. Childish in the same or worse manner than Bobo and MGT. This slippery slope of behavior that has been rampant the last 8 years is infantile and stupid, and it is why I can't stand either party.

I did like Elissa Slotkin's rebuttal-- she's pretty good, she's a Michigan chick who can reach across the aisle (and has reached across the aisle as a representative in a fairly conservative leaning district), and attracts people from both sides. I didn't like her at first when she first started running, but met her a couple of times and thought she was more of my moderate view than I had originally thought. I have no idea why the democratic leadership hasn't figured out that someone like her, Bashear or Shapiro should be the face of the democratic party. These old geezers need to step aside.

Execution by Firing Squad - Friday in South Carolina.

A man who was convicted of murdering his girlfriend's parents in 2001 (24 years!) chose to be executed by firing squad over lethal injection or electric chair. This will be the first execution by firing squad in 15 years. The article also contains a concise history of the use of firing squads for executions:

Indiana FB Transfer, Riley Nowakowski

By Colin Lavery, Athlon Sports
Indiana grabbed a pair of TEs from the portal, Holden Staes & Riley Nowakowski. Like Staes, who joined Indiana from Tenn., Nowakowski is coming from a high major program in Wisc. Nowakowski is also the 2nd player that Indiana has recruited whose time at Wisc. overlapped with OL coach Bob Bostad.
Bostad had success getting the best of Trey Wedig, the other Wisc. transfer, turning him into an NFL prospect in just one year in Blmgtn. He will have another project on his hands with Nowakowski. In 5 seasons at Wisc. he started just 10 of the 40 games he appeared in & has played a variety of positions at TE, LB, & FB. Being used primarily as a run blocker should prepare him well for his role at Indiana. While Zach Horton was used in the passing game last year more than Nowakowski was, he still saw the majority of his snaps as a run blocker. Depending on how OC Mike Shanahan approaches this season with Fernando Mendoza, Nowakowski might find himself behind Staes on the depth chart. Mendoza simply doesn't have the experience that Kurtis Rourke had, so the passing game may be more conservative & feature a TE more prominently. If that's the case, Staes has a better record as a receiver. If Cignetti & Shanahan continue to use TEs as run blockers primarily, Nowakowski might have the edge because of his familiarity with Bostad & his better run blocking grade.
Either way, Nowakowski will be in the top two TE depth chart, & more of a platoon position than last year for the Indiana offense.

I sold a ton of stock on Mondays close.

I can't believe this shit is going to turn out well. I spent 28 years of my life training and teaching how to defeat the Sovit Union. I know they invaded; they can't be trusted. Berating a leader of Ukraine, destroying the Atlantic alliance is not my America. I lost my best friend to this political movement, and I am out. Trumps majority got a c- in high school history, which is really a F, and they haven't read a book in forty years.

Who will it actually be?

I’m not a basketball coach, so maybe I’m way off on this

But it seems to me that a good coach controls the parts of the game that he can control. Defense seems like it’s mostly scheme and effort. It’s not random. It’s subject to being controlled. A good coach should have a good defense. Free throw percentage is also something that a coach can control through practice and effort, except in the case of maybe chronic brick-layer like Shaq or something. A good coach’s team should hit its free throws at a good percentage.

On the other hand, offense seems less controllable. Turnovers and shot selection are controllable, but when it comes to shooting, sometimes teams are hot and sometimes they’re cold. That’s random. Well coached teams can get hit scoring droughts and lose games they should win, and poorly coached teams can get hot from three and win games they should lose.

So what’s my point? I see some of the candidates like McCollum and Bennett who won at a high level, while not having a high scoring team, getting put down for boring offense. I think I’d prefer those guys because to me they’re the better coaches. They control what they can. In my opinion, winning is what’s exciting. Those guys finished in the top three of their league at a much higher rate than the other candidates. Isn’t that what we all really want? Tony Bennett’s average finish in a tough ACC in 15 years was 3rd. He won the league 6 times. I’d have liked to have had “boring” results at IU like that the last 15 years. Coach Crean and Fran McCaffery are known for scoring a lot. Are they great coaches? Scoring a lot and losing is not exciting.

I understand Archie was a defense guy and he failed. I also hear the argument that the top players won’t want to play the slower pace. But the landscape has totally changed since Archie was here. We can pay players now, and we have tons of dough. It’s not like it was. We’re getting talented players to come now when we’re finishing 10th, missing the tournament half the time, and running both a bad offense and a bad defense. Imagine the players that might come when we’re top three in the Big Ten every year with a great defense and and effective, though boring, offense.

I don’t think Coach Pearl will come, unfortunately. He’d de a definite winner. I’d absolutely love to have Coach Beard, but I think the cowards in charge won’t hire him. That said, I think McCollum or Bennett would be great. If it’s not one of those guys, I really hope they don’t hire one of the long list of decent but average candidates (Cronin, Williams, Brownell, McDermott, etc. ). I’m sure they are good coaches and good people, but they will doom us to being average. If we get to that point, I hope they hire Coach Alford. He’s just as good as anyone not named Pearl, Beard, McCollum or Bennett, and he’d have a competitive advantage over the others I listed because of his local fame.

I really don’t know anything. I’m not sure why I even write any of this. I just want IU to be good again.

B1G rankings for upcoming season based on advanced early stats...

This article put out by the USA Today earlier, ranked the B1G for this upcoming season based on advanced early stats. This ranking was based on advanced stats guru Bill Connelly's view. IU came in at No. 6, and again they had to bring up if it was a fluke season. Link:
