Woodson recruiting like Archie now....

Then why did Hurley even bother with McNeeley and Mullins? Surely they’ll be of no use to him.

/And don’t call me Shirley.
Did I ever say Woodson should never recruit a high school kid again? I didn’t think so.

/And Dumbass is more fitting.

Since he can’t actually recruit one (except when he’s desperate and one falls in his lap), he seemingly has no choice.

Program’s gotta be attractive enough to get the cream of the crop from both HS and the portal. Indiana isn’t that program, and hasn’t been for over 30 years. That’s not all on Woody, but he’s not helping.

Tucker took one official visit in two years (Kansas Nov 23). The G-League Ignite disbanded on March 21st 2024; he visited and committed to IU by March 28…that isn’t a coincidence. Nobody, including Duke, was recruiting Tucker in 2024.

Tucker took 3 college visits: Kansas, Michigan State, and IU. While Tucker's plan to join the G-League undoubtedly caused all coaches to back off of Tucker, Woody's comment suggests he gave up on Tucker earlier on in the process, when Duke was still in the picture. But yes, when Tucker's dad called Woody, I imagine no college coaches were recruiting him.

When it comes to recruiting, other coaches should take notes. Woody has cracked the code. Sit back and wait for the parents of 5-star recruits (e.g., Mgbako/Tucker) to call him. ;)

McNeeley decommitted before Mgbako decided to return.

The recruits who went elsewhere saw a underperforming coach who’s not a great tactician but thinks he’s a lot better than he actually is, and decided the grass was much greener away from Bloomington.

do you feel better each time you repeat this stuff?

some of you guys are relentless w the anti-Woodson stuff.

We get it. He's an average coach. He's NOT Bobby Knight! (heaven forbid!).

Guys, Knight hasn't been good at IU in 30 ****ing years. Get over it.

He’s still milking Bob Knight’s legacy for what little it might still be worth a quarter-century later. Those banners don’t sway in the breeze like they used to, heavy laden in dust that they be now.

Yeah if only there were only, like, 8 teams each year who had a chance to win the title each year, no 3 pointer, no night games, no games on sunday, etc.

You know, when nOrthwestern was 1-15 each season, nobody was good but us and maybe Mich, PU.

you know, the 1970 and 80s. Last century.

lol

Sisley?

As a ‘73 IU graduate, those days seem like the day before yesterday, if not just last week or several months prior. I still occasionally wake up in the middle of the night, drenched in sweat, with the thought of Lou Watson pacing our sideline. I’m so old I used to go to IU basketball games shuffling my feet in the sawdust lining the perimeter of the court. I’m a bit surprised there aren’t more sufferers of WLD (Wooden Lung Disease) in these parts from all that dust we kicked up. “If you or any of your loved ones attended IU games before Assembly Hall’s construction…”

This is 100% conjecture on my part... But I think you're probably right on the portal vs high school kids route with Woodson. Some of the things he's said, some of the interviews I've watched, I'm guessing he doesn't like the process of catering to high school kids that haven't proven anything yet. He just started coaching college ball a few years ago, but he's older, and has been around the game for a long, long time. And most of that time has been spent around NBA players and organizations. It isn't too much of a stretch to believe he has a chip on his shoulder having to treat these 17-18 year old kids better than he had to treat grown men professionals.

And then I do think the style of play, both from the B10 overall, and from his own teams play, have hurt him with a number of scoring and/or shooting oriented perimeter players. And then, I think my first theory on his personality and attitude not jiving with how kids need to be recruited nowadays, probably also plays a role when he's trying to talk through his offense and his style, with kids and their parents. I could see him growing very weary and tired of having to justify his beliefs to kids and their families.

We're seeing the end results. Hopefully this team answers some of these things for him, and rather than explaining things over and over, he'll just be able to show them tape. As of now, he doesn't have any tape of having a perimeter player friendly offense.
If it's taking any toll on him wooing top hs kids and especially Indiana ones, then maybe he needs to retire next season and let a more energetic coach?recruiter step in. I watched IU when Woodson played. I'm sure Bobby had to recruit him to come to IU. I also understand he had to deal with egos and attitudes of NBA players. So he might no longer have that energy it takes to recruit. But don't harm IU for that in the short or long term. That's selfish!

I care very little about high school recruiting in this climate.
But you can't keep recruiting portal players in large amounts and expect cohesion and the honor to play for IU. They are playing for financial gains not what's on the uniform. Sisley will if they can keep him and he doesn't go the Mc Neeley route. But you need more than Sisley. It's looking more like Archie recruiting with the hs part anyway.

This season isnot underwheming, quit crying and cheer for our Hoosiers.
I'm looking at what the future will hold for IU, if he is lacking in hs recruiting at all. I've cheered for IU since 1969 so I 've seen a lot of ups and downs. Mike Davis was a great guy that just couldn't recruit. Crean did to an extent.Archie not so good. And Woodson is looking more and more like Archie if it wasn't for NIL money to go to rentals for 1-2 years. Need young player development in the mix too. bUT THAT IS WANING and that isn't good for IU.

Huh?

Team isn't going to be heavy reliant on the portal next season. Rice and Carlyle will both have two years of eligibility left, Tucker will have three, and Reneau has another year. That's 4 out of 5 projected starters next year, god forbid Mgbako come back althoughI don't think it will happen. Cupps, Sisley, Newton off the bench will all have multiple years of eligibility left. You need a portal big to replace Ballo and and another 4 and 5 for depth purposes.

Roster is in fine shape going forward.

You do realize that the recruits you are bitching about Woodson missing out on are only 1-2 year rentals right?. Haralson won't be on ND's campus but 8 months and Mullins is 1-2 year player based on everything he was looking for in his recruitment. If you're going to recruit 1-2 year rentals better to do it with 22 and 23 year old grown men who have proven themselves at this level vs 18-19 year old kids coming out of high school.

I can't understand for the life of me why people fret over losing OAD type high school prospects these days.

We know what we have with Woody. As a fanbase we should adjust our expectations a bit. I'm prepared to see a roster with the talent to beat anyone. However ive watched both exhibitions and it is the the same thing we ran last year. I was hopeful, with some of the things I had been told but it's identical to last year, just sped up a bit (disguised) by Rice, with Ballo uncomfortably being used like Ware.

I have no doubt that Woody can continue to accumulate talent in the spring, retain the players he wants to retain and even land a late signing period 5☆. I do seriously doubt that he will run an effective/appealing offense that will make us competitive during the early signing period. He will continue to be negatively recruited against based on that. I'm of the opinion that his limitations will always fail to maximize even the most talented teams.
