Will NYC elect a socialist mayor?

I’m not sure reactionary is the right word, Brad. I don’t think most conservatives are against change reflexively. We just don’t think this country is fundamentally flawed and in need of a total overhaul.
What you wrote--wanting to "go back"--is, I think, by definition, reactionary.

Like with socialism, though, I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing. Depends on the context and issue.

I know. I'm just pointing out that we shouldn't soft sell Mamdani's socialism. He doesn't have "tendencies" that happen to be socialist, he IS a socialist.

As you know, I don't consider that, in and of itself, pejorative.
As he moves into a general election…will the campaign run away from his more radical positions similar to what was tried with Kamala?

I don’t agree, there is no left and right populism. Marx focused on class disparity, but he was by no means a populist.

I agree with you that this guy is not a populist.

What kind of populism is it when you lose the poor whites, the AAs, the Hispanics, the non-college educated, and the elderly all by 20% points or so?

Look at the polling. This guy won by combining the mostly young and college-educated Guilty White Leftists, of whom there are an abundance in NYC, with an overwhelming % of Muslim voters. So it's Wokeism /Elitism + identity politics. It's the same playbook as in LA, Chicago, and London.

Truly a bizarre coalition.

I'm with you up to the "same playbook as . . . Chicago."

Brandon Johnson received a high % of the black vote and a lower % of the white one, although he did well among the white progressives:

is your signature AI generated and if so did you ask it to write in the style of a known author?
Go check out your The End thread. I asked ChatGPT to review the Water Cooler and write me what Ignatius J. Reilly would think of it. It then asked if I wanted it to create an initial post for here. Inspired genius.

Holy. Shit. Wow. That is absolutely incredible and frightening.
In the right hands, these LLMs are going to lead to an explosion of incredible content. What I posted was just a first draft. Imagine a real writer using it and refining that prose to create a legitimately good sequel to Confederacy of Dunces?

Or anything else. Shakespeare, for example. What better subject for a Shakespearean tragedy (or comedy) than Donald J. Trump? Automatic iambic pentameter.

to be honest i don't like it. what you have in your signature is remarkable. it really does sound like toole. but being computer generated some how removes the, what, heart, spirit, i don't know. like a robot being better than messi

You know who's a real reactionary? The Chief of Police of Malibu, that's who.

Honestly, not that different from a conversation with Trump voters. Fed up with the party and just wants someone outside of the establishment. Replace gov't grocery stores and free buses with a few issues that Trump ran on like bringing back all the manufacturing jobs and imposing tariffs on allies.

I agree and younger people are pissed off because the monetary system doesn't benefit them, but tariffs are just a tax. They're a nothing-burger in the overall scheme of things.

Grok's take on socialism:

Yo Brad, socialism’s a dumpster fire. It’s a fairy tale for suckers who think the government can wipe their ass better than they can. Central planning? Total disaster—Venezuela’s proof, with inflation so bad a loaf of bread cost a wheelbarrow of cash by 2018. It murders ambition: why bust your hump if some bureaucrat’s gonna snatch your paycheck for “equality”? Look at Cuba, stuck in a 1950s time warp, or Mao’s China, where millions starved under commie genius. Meanwhile, capitalist countries like South Korea or the U.S. churn out iPhones, Teslas, and wealth while socialist shitholes ration toilet paper. It hands power to the state, crushes freedom, and screws everyone except the elites. GDP per capita in free markets smokes socialist slums every time. Wake up—socialism’s a scam that leaves you broke and chained.

@twenty02 the next mayor of the largest and arguably best city in the U.S. is a 33 year old Muslim socialist born in Uganda. I think roughly 35% of New York City is foreign born. You were arguing the other day that we need to increase our immigration numbers.

I think what makes America great is our commitment to rights, freedoms, and free markets. Zohran most likely disagree with all 3 of those on some level and I assume has a much different vision of what the U.S. should be compared to myself or you. My question is does this give you any pause on wide scale immigration?

won by getting educated people...hmm

more impressive than winning by getting the uneducated

Ask it about social security.

educated perhaps. certainly not smart. appealing to the aggrieved and preposterously guilty. but not too educated or they'd certainly be wary of thatcher's admonition. so perhaps moderately educated and stupid
It’s a fair question to ask. If someone goes to school and learns falsehoods and nonsense. Are they “educated”?

I think of Outside Shooter in the case. Probably has the longest list of degrees on this board but he certainly doesn’t know anything of value.

Ask it about social security.
Grok's calculation on how much SS costs an average American:

Comparison
  • Social Security: Real value at start of career ≈ $82,095.
  • Stock Market Investment: Real value of equivalent annuity at start of career ≈ $353,969.
  • Difference: $353,969 - $82,095 = $271,874.
With a 7.5% real return and $60,000 income, the average American could potentially gain about $271,874 in real terms (in today’s dollars) by investing their 12.4% payroll taxes in the stock market over 40 years, compared to relying on Social Security.

Snarlcakes final words:

Social Security is one of the worse government programs for the middle class.
