Look at the polling. This guy won by combining the mostly young and college-educated Guilty White Leftists, of whom there are an abundance in NYC, with an overwhelming % of Muslim voters. So it's Wokeism /Elitism + identity politics. It's the same playbook as in LA, Chicago, and London.

Replace gov't grocery stores and free buses with a few issues that Trump ran on like bringing back all the manufacturing jobs and imposing tariffs on allies.
