The front page noted the passing of Coach Bob Elliott. He had a long and successful career as an assistant coach for a variety of programs after spending years on Hayden Fry's successful Iowa teams in the 90's. Frye's "coaching tree" boasts many guys who went on to be very successful college head coaches. Many believe this "tree" to be the most influential of all, especially noted for producing winning programs from struggling ones, think Bill Snyder at Kansas State, Barry Alverez at Wisconsin. Fry once opined that Bob Elliott was the best of the bunch as a prospective head coach. He likely would have replaced Fry at Iowa but a rare blood cancer interrupted his career.

After IU parted ways with Coach DiNardo in 2004 the choices to replace him came down to Bob Elliott and Terry Hoeppner. Coach Hep, an excellent choice, succumbed in the spring of 2007 after beginning to right our ship. Coach Elliott went on to other successful stints as an assistant.

This is not a criticism of the choice or a complaint about our bad luck. Life has twists and turns. Bob Elliott and Terry Hoeppner overcame many of the twists and turns in their lives. They left the people places they were at better than they found them.

Race well run Coach Elliott.
