Pure ignorance. You fall for the effort of Trump’s supporters to misconstrue and misrepresent Vindman’s origin story.
The Vindmans emigrated from the Soviet Union, not Ukraine. They were Ashkenazi Jews from a majority-Russian-speaking Soviet city. He was born in Kiev, yes, then part of the Soviet Union. Ukraine did not exist as a free country until 12 years after they left, and so he never held "Ukrainian citizenship".
In the 70s some Soviet Jews were allowed to leave the country, provided that they renounce their citizenship forever and pledge never return to the U.S.S.R. After his mother died, his father, an engineer, applied for and was give an exit visa for himself, 3 children, and the children's grandmother. The exit visa required them to go to Israel, though Israel allowed program "dropouts" and permitted them to relocate to Italy. Once in Italy, the father worked to get permission to emigrate to the USA, and Brighton Beach, which had a significant Russian immigrant community.
Alexander Vindman’s master’s degree, from Harvard, is in Russian, Eastern Europe, and Central Asian Studies. He later served at the embassies in both Kiev and Moscow. His older brother, Leonid, who became an investment banker, married a Russian art historian from Moscow.
For some, the fact that Vindman, an Army lieutenant colonel, is an immigrant is enough for him to be painted as a double agent, a traitor, or a spy.
