A big thank you should go out to the ISPs. They have invested well over $1 trillion in building and improving our networks performance and speed.
It has been a savior for some as they work from home.
The EU is looking to ration broadband and cut Web traffic by 25%, but we keep chugging along freely.

Are you kidding me? We have some of the lowest internet speeds in the developed world.

Why is Europe looking to ration and cut?
We have orders of magnitude more land to cover and orders of magnitude more people to service (because each European country builds its own network).

LOL. The US is no where near the lead in home or mobile internet speed. And it has nothing to do with geography.

"Netflix and YouTube announced they would be reducing their quality of streaming in Europe to lessen the strain on the continent's internet capabilities during the pandemic. The move comes after EU commissioner Breton implored streaming services to switch to SD."
Here in the States, we keep chugging along.
The reason....less government.

I give a lot of props to our local ISPs for providing free broadband internet service to people who previously didn't have it so that local school kids could distance learn. It's a big and important thing here in Los Angeles and I'm assuming it's likewise happening elsewhere. That's really a massive good thing being offered.

That said, the analysis of broadband issues in Europe in the OP is preciously thin. I breathlessly await the fervent insights in a coming post about the reason our C19 testing lagging so badly being that we need a tax cut.

You really don't know much about this Interwebz business do you!!

Its everything to do with the very nebulous telco to telco peering and transit agreements -- not national borders or boarders to some of you.

And no, the US has a relatively poor telco infrastructure across the nation and in particular into the non-traditional urban areas. And why? Thats another debate for another time.

I remember consulting on an IPTV project in China in a Tier3 city in the North. Found out that they had fibre to the home in 2011/12 and I only got mine in 2013(?) -- it was a like a year ahead of me anyway.
I get like 400mbps into the home the last time I looked and on the same basic fibre package, I got like 5-6 yrs ago. Korea has like 1Gbit connectivity at like $20/mo.

edit: I get like 1Gbps but at like $30/mo.

Here's a relatively pedestrian but still mostly solid take on why Europe is slowing more than America. Hint: it's not Because capitalism, bitches!

I'm told that YouPorn is actually better in standard definition. Fewer zits and moles and shankers.

Actors of every genre hate HD because it very clearly shows off every physical imperfection they have. HD is great for sports, but I'm not as big of a fan for TV and movies.
