Florida obviously is a pink state currently so for Biden to win it an accomplishment. Before covid I don’t think Biden had much chance. Now it’s tight. Why? Florida has an unusual mix of seniors, from all over. While most may be conservative, what’s relevant is how many will consider voting for Biden.
One common characteristic of the ones who retired to Florida is they could afford to, hence they’re not dumb. Unlike Lucy Trumpniks, they’re not likely to ignore Trump’s balderdash about covid. For seniors a serious response to covid has life-prolonging consequences.
Every one that switches to Biden is a two-vote swing. How many will it take for Biden to win Florida? Biden doesn’t need to “win” seniors.
I discussed this in the total states thread earlier, but on FL it bears repeating. In the one state where Trump is actively encouraging mail-in voting (and therefore won't try to suppress it) ballot requests for Dems far outnumber those for Pubs.
This is common knowledge released by the FL Sec of State- I even saw a graphic reporting the discrepancy scroll across the bottom of the screen while watching a video from FNC. For reference, in 2016 mail ballot requests between Dems and GOP were basically even, and Trump won a nailbiter based on election day totals...
I think in some ways DeSantis has been Trump's worst enemy in FL, with some of the knucklehead moves he has pulled with regards to COVID. From cavalierly characterizing the state as "God's waiting room" to his blatant disregard for the health of teachers, adult employees, and susceptible family members by repeatedly demanding that schools have to open fully even while the situation was worsening.
But Trump is just an idiot. You can't continually downplay the effects of a virus because it "only harms older people" and NOT expect to lose support amongst some of those people. Last week he told maskless Trumpkins in Ohio that the virus affected "virtually nobody", which of course sat well with anyone who isn't a Trump cultist...
Why are all these Republicans getting COVID?
"The chairman of an Arkansas county Republican committee died from complications associated with COVID-19 on Tuesday—less than one month after his organization hosted a maskless gathering with other elected leaders.
Steven Farmer, who served as the chairman of the Craighead County Republican Committee, died on Tuesday after a weeks-long battle with the coronavirus that resulted in a stay at the ICU and a ventilator, his daughter and the organization announced.
The news comes just three weeks after his committee hosted an event with Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) and Rep. Louis Gohmert (R-TX), who contracted COVID-19 in July, for Reagan Day. Photos of the event show few attendees wearing masks and minimal social distancing. Arkansas state Rep. Dan Sullivan, who is currently spearheading a lawsuit to overturn the mask mandate and other health directives in his state, also appears to have spoken at the event."
