Curious what is the advantage in placing his name into the transfer portal now considering he has already utilized his redshirt season versus playing out the year and transferring at that time???

NCAA has a new proposed rule out there that if you have a medical hardship, and then you redshirt afterwards, you are eligible for a 6th year. Cole played in 4 games or less this year, which, if the rule passes, he would be eligible for a 6th year wherever he transfers to. If he graduates, he will not have to sit out a year.
Currently, the rule has to be that you have a medical hardship (redshirt) in your first initial year in college. But they are trying to change that to the medical hardship happens any year. It sounds likely that it will pass, and that is where Cole would be able to get another year back.
