The Serious Election Day Thread

I mean she's clearly angry, and I don't agree with all her points, but she also makes some good points and seems worth listening to.

Isn't she Galloway's co-host on his pod?
She does make good points. How many people from Trump's first cabinet are now roundly criticized and called idiots by Trump and the MAGA cult? If his first term is any indication, there are more than a handful of people currently excited about working in the Trump Administration who are very publicly going to be on the outs with him and will write a book about how big of a moron he is.

So far, what I’ve seen is same old toxic cable TV news

On the other hand, he’s a lame duck - maybe DT extends an olive branch in his victory speech

But I doubt it. I suspect impeachment and convictions will be the DNC party line and Trump is not really a “forgive and forget” kinda guy either.
Agree. That's why I was asking the question. I don't see much evidence of either side being the bigger person and trying to work together. It will have to come at some point, but probably requires a hard reset somewhere along the way and I suspect we are a good 8-10 years away from that.

I actually miss my time at sea. We do have good liberty ports too. ;)

I also lived in Hawaii for about 9 years all together (first ship and fifth ship and two shore assignments) and after the first year or two I loved it. Too expensive to live there now in retirement. I mean we could, but it wouldn't be in a home that I'd prefer. It would be the equivalent of a shack here on the mainland.
I thought it was nice to visit (one time) but you could probably drive around the big island in a day.... now where do I go? 😀

Trump has done far more than you have, Won the presidency twice. So I would say you are the moron!

Minorities were and are disproportionately hammered by prices. And her idea was to roll out Beyoncé. Look we’re black!!!! And you love Beyoncé!!!!

Insulting
I heard a black man in an interview this morning. He said something on the order of “they (democrats) come to our churches preaching they will increase minimum wage. We’re tired of minimum, we want maximum and higher”.

I've been to Oahu and the Big Island. Great places to visit. In two and a half weeks I'll be touring Maui and Kauai.

Would be a great place to live, were it not for the "$1,500,000 starter home" factor
What’s the best time to vacation in Hawaii?

Kauai is gorgeous. Lush and amazing and lots of good food. Have a great trip!
If you want to see humpback whales, the best time of the year is January to March. Big wave time is November to March. You can see lava flows anytime on the Big Island (Hawaii). I used to like to take the ship around that side of Hawaii and watch it going into the ocean at night.

Late winter is rainy season, I am told, but even then it is rare for rain to set in all day. Winter also comes with rougher surf, especially on the north shores, for some reason. More of the diving, snorkeling, and boat tours get cancelled.

The flip side is that if you get a somewhat calm sea winter day, that is the peak time for seeing whales and dolphins.

My daughter is at UH, on Oahu, in Honolulu. She does outdoor stuff like hiking all year long, though summers are in her opinion a bit humid. Nothing like south FL though. 80-85 and humid beats 90 and humid any time.

I like this approach. Call more men sexist and racist.

Rainy season in most of Hawaii means rain for a couple hours in the afternoon.

To a certain degree, they’re right. A lot of Black and Hispanic men are racist and misogynistic. (Maybe even more so than their oppressors!). But what if that’s just their culture? How dare a white man question it. Can Sharpton critique Hispanic culture?

And is it any surprise that black men are, on average, more sexist given the rap lyrics many are raised on? I’ve had to have several talks with my son, who is no listening to that crap, about some of these lyrics. They’re awful.

But none of that means these voters couldn’t put those prejudices aside and make an informed decision. That’s one of the mistakes in this type of thinking.

I'll break your brain today, Brad. Women are more sexist than men, because of the indoctrination that has taken place the past several decades.

Thank you! What months would be 1-2-3 for you?

I don’t think democrats can continue taking things for granted with minorities.

Aloha would have more first hand info. I visited in August when my daughter was moving into school. Seemed great. This next trip around Thanksgiving I picked due to time off anyway, and after following some Hawaii travel sites saying the weather in terms of wind and rain is better in November/December than in January/February/March.

Since the weather is not really all that bad any time, there isn't much of a high season vs. low season pricing on accommodations.

Hotels can give you sticker shock for sure. I found a VRBO for about $400/night and it actually seemed like a good deal, given the location (Hanalei in Kauai)

I am shocked that Trump actually is going to win the popular vote - rather easily too it seems, despite having 2 million less votes. How is that possible? I suppose there are one of two explanations (or potentially a combination of the two).

1) There were actually some fraudulent voting issues in 2020 given COVID, etc. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, so I am going to assume this is not what transpired - at least not at a broad level that accounts for the millions of votes that didn't show up in 2024, but voted in 2020.

2) Kamala AND Trump were THAT unpopular where he lost 2 million voters because of any number of various issues, traits, etc. But, she was WILDLY unpopular to secure ~15 million fewer votes than Biden. The overall turnout is an indicator that the choices were terrible, but that the DNC's choice was particularly embarrassing, as I've been claiming since she was put in as VP.

That's an interesting take. Where did Harris call men toxic?
She’s the face of the Democratic Party as the nominee. The Democrats lately are mostly right on a lot of policies - especially economic (inflation notwithstanding). But their entire go to market model is Identity Politics and Wokeism. It should be obvious at this point that outside of blue cities, the rest of the country is flat out tired of it.

The loud Left is deafening compared to the loud Right - mainly because it comes from places outside of politics (eg Academia and Media). Fix the go to market model or die a necessary death.

We just elected a buffoon for president to save us from an even worse buffoon who I’m sure wouldn’t be able to hold back the extreme Left.

She inherited a disaster too. The border numbers are awful. The economy didn’t resonate. Prices did. She is uniquely bad with her mealy mouthed ways but she wasn’t left with much to promote. So she defaulted to he’s a fascist. People want cheap Oreos and don’t give a F about that or Hollywood opinions

If I were to guess, it's #2.

Another thing that could have hurt voting was wait times. I know in Fort Wayne, the Saturday before voting my sister waited almost 3 hours at her location. She couldn't vote Monday or yesterday so that was the only day she could do it. I highly doubt we could ever figure it out, but I wonder how many people went to vote and left because of long lines.

I visit there often. The natives I talk to - other than the ones that want their country back - all yearn to move to the mainland. They all have island fever. Feel trapped.

Thanks for your thoughts on that. I'm not sure you are 100% right on all of it, but you do make some good points.

For example, I don't agree that the Democratic Party's entire go to market model is Identity Politics and Wokeism. It is a significant part of it and I do think that is the part of the message that you've heard, but that's certainly not what has attracted me to Democratic candidates. And I disagree that the loud Left is any more deafening than the loud Right. I think a lot of that disconnect is due to the audio frequency that each person's ears are attuned to.

As I've said previously, I spent a little bit of time around Harris and I don't think buffoon is an accurate way to describe her at all. She's a pretty garden variety politician from my experience. I don't think Trump is a buffoon either FWIW

I do think it's interesting that you indicate that you believe that Democrats are lately mostly right on a lot of policies. And I do think Democrats need to do a better job of talking about those issues in ways that are more aspirational.
