The Music Thread

But putting poetry to music is the way to get that extra credit for me.
Certain performers I only listen to for the lyrics... I don't listen to Dylan for the musical portion, I know it's generally just a simple backing. I listen to him for the poems .. unless he has Bloomfield with him, then I also listen to him.

Certain performers I understand don't write that way, Phish, being one. they are definitely about the jam and couldn't care less about words.

Some, the best of them, do well in both.

People process music differently, people write music differently .. there's distinct differences in writing on a piano, vs acoustic and a click track, vs a band building on a riff, vs writing in the feminine - music to words, vs writing in the masculine - words to music.

A song written on piano in the feminine lends it self to good lyrical construction but tends to have very little in the way of rhythm or harmonic movement. they rarely have a groove. Think Sarah McLachlan don't listen to her unless you want to fall asleep.

While band riff creations there's no serious lyrics, they are exclusively written in the masculine, no pre written words, just a riff and everyone builds off that riff including the vocalist. As always exceptions exist. Many rock, jazz, funk, punk groups write this way including Zep. most just make shit up that fits the groove.. think Van Halen among many others.

Personally I don't listen to metal, blues, jazz, or those style for lyrics those are all about the music, nor do I listen to Dylan for riffs and grooves.. Every style has its thing.

Disclaimer: there is one vocalist whose lyrics are so appallingly stupid that he offends me. That is Andy Kiedis, of RHCP. It's not just the 7th grade shop class veiny dongs on a notebook level concepts he uses, it's also his overly monotone delivery that ruins a great sound. The rest of the band is exponentially more talented than he is. I just can't ignore him... Love the band and how they sound but he ruins it for me in the same way Dave ruins it for hoosbot .. I have a CD of RHCP songs with the vocals removed. it's wonderful ...

Simon is witty.

There's different ways to write, some styles only require repeated hooks and nothing else they can be done anyway they want. think of funk ... its chanting more than anything else and what they chant doesn't really matter, how they chant it does. and I guarantee there a 99% chance it includes the word funk. to me it's nuthin but a bass drum beat played vocally .

fwiw - Dylan has a formula he uses. Oddly, unlike most, who either write a rhythm first, or start with a riff and build on it, or start with a rhyme and place it in a chord structure. Dylan starts with a vocal melody first, humming it, then sings gibberish paying attention - like a rapper - to how syllables fit the beat. During and after this process he picks a theme for lyrics.

Lyrically, he writes by picking a theme, pick some names to fit the theme, find a profound phrase and turn it backwards or upside down. < His words, paraphrased.

"I was so much older then I'm younger than that now". Then he places chords over the melody as a backing, emphasizing the harmonic elements using chord partials.

Simon, because he felt he was rhythm disabled when writing began writing exclusively with bass or drums tracks.
Speaking of how people like Paul and Bob write, and about Carly Simon (that's me not you)- but bear with me...

This is a song of Carly's off her first album that she co-wrote with a fellow camp counsellor named Caleb a few years previously. I always thought it was Carly semi-autobiographical, but it turns out Caleb may have actually penned most of the lyrics and they may involve events in his life rather than hers...

I love her vocal on this...

And now that we've brought Carly into the conversation, how about a story with Carly as facilitator of a historic meeting. I think you'll enjoy this...

Does anyone use Internet Radio. I have the following 3 stations loaded as top favorites on my receiver and also h loaded up on some apps to stream in the vehicle. No Commercials is nice. I used to have a really good psychedelic station that played lots of stuff from late 60's and early 70's but it has disappeared so it is now deleted.

ATX The Radio show
Radio Brooklin
MILED - classic rock
Austin Blues Radio

Anyone have favorite Internet stations that would be worth trying. I pretty much like all rock but tend to lean classic rock and blues.

Jackie Venson is really high on my list of next shows to go see. Since she is local to austin it shouldn't be easy to get out to see her. Maybe I'll be lucky and get to see her open up for Gary clark Jr. who I saw at the Moody Theater when he had his Austin city Limits show recorded for PBS.

Anybody listened to the Frampton Fingerprints LP/CD or whatever they call them these days. The Black Hole sun cover version on that album is really good. I saw him at the Moody theater and immediately bought Fingerprints after hearing Black hole Sun.
KUTX, Austin Texas
KCRW, Santa Monica, California (they have great DJ shows that play a variety of music depending on your tastes...some of my favorites are Dan Wilcox, Anne Litt, Tyler Boudreaux). They archive the DJ shows so you can listen at your leisure.

Both have apps that you can download for free and stream for free.

Stevie Nicks… big crowd and hot as hell.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrr .....

In the 80's, every female, every, eventually spoke the dreaded words "can you play Landslide?" I have built up a very special hatred for her... the only words more dreaded were "can you play Leather and Lace" .... Arggggggggggggggh, shoot me.

My friends and I decided that playing either song for a girl was basically lowering oneself to musical prostitution and would endlessly clown on anyone caught doing it, calling them every possibly known word in every language meaning prostitute for weeks..

It has nothing to do with talent, or her sheep like braying, her lyrics, her extensive cocaine habit or her ability or destroy bands by screwing all her bandmates ... or anything else really except Lindsey f**king Buckingham. Oh how I hate what he does to a great instrument by playing sparkle fairy riffs. Play that song and I will destroy your guitar...lol. I'd rather hear Stairway to Heaven. Freebird or Sweet Home Alabama..

lol ... I'm only partially joking ..

How bout some boogie woogie piano instead . The world needs more boogie woogie less braying and people that play guitar with "sparkly" tone...

Lol I figured you’d have an opinion. I’m listening to her biography too and she most definitely screwed around a lot. Did you know she got pregnant by Don Henley? Everyone in the band just passed people around it sounds like.

I was really surprised at how many young people were there, as I thought it would just be an older crowd. Lots of young girls floating around in flowy vests, feathers and hats.

Ode to Athens GA - lived there 85 to 87.

Saw these guys every chance i had. The drummer always stole the show.

Never saw REM live, their Athens shows were top-secret.

B52s were before my time there, but have to include them.

Not music, but Kim Basinger gets an honorable mention.

My earliest recollection of MTV. Say what you will about GnR but that opening riff blaring out the mono speaker of my friend's black and white TV (yep, took me a while to figure out the video was shot in black and white). Must have had an effect b/c of the vividness of the memory itself. I remember the room I was in (friend's bedroom), his stupid waterbed, his soft hands (kidding pervs)...I remember it was August. It was hot. Weird.

Do you remember the Chickasaw Mud Puppies? Great band from Athens just after that time.

Not surprised ..

fwiw -
Henley is a major creep. He has 1000s of hours of 8mm film of him sexually abusing groupies. Groupies tend to be underage. Not all of it was consensual. He had a pair of fuzzy purple handcuffs that left no bruises. Detestable human being ..

lol on that note ..

Rolling with Gorillaz today ...

Great town! My buddy coached the kid in the it's the end of the world video at soccer camp. Stipe - the pride of collinsville Illinois

There were a lot of covers of this song, but this is my favorite. Jim Irsay bought the guitar she used for his collection. A few years ago I saw a Facebook post of an old high school classmate playing one from Irsay's collection, John Lennon's.

My wife took our 11 y/o daughter with her...she had issues with heat exhaustion but said SN sounded amazing and from the videos she sent me, I concur. Next up is Billy Joel this SAT at Notre Dame Stadium. I'm not really Joel fan per se but it should be a good show...some entertainers just do it right and well. :)

I’m still thinking of driving to that. I’d like to see him. There was a little girl in line with us to get in who passed out. Def hot!

But I say, that the women today,
smarter than the man in every way

That's right, the women are smarter...

I just heard three teenage buskers (two girls one boy think they were siblings) performing this song on Main Street in Galena ,Illinois. They were great and I find it a powerful song. You can switch two words (California and Viet Nam) and it could be played in any country and at any time the last hundred years or so and have the same emotional punch I think:

I am absolutely astounded by this clip, and I fear for our younger generation. I will admit it took me a minute (about 20 secs) to put it together, but for the players to go 0-3 on this boggles the mind...And the returning Champion guy looks to be at least 70, so he has NO excuse...

Speaking of Dylan and poetry... One of my top songs of Dylan's that I think I'd prefer his version to any possible cover...

The exact opposite. Brilliant song that I prefer a more melodic cover... Love Roger's voice on this...
