Shorter athletes... Do you mean for most people under 6ft 4?

Its a shame that it may never catch on. It such a great sport.

I could be anywhere in the world -- from Indonesia to Turkey to South Africa, never mind Europe --- I could be having a long-ass conversation at a bar with someone I just met on football.

It's the great 'bridge' that binds almost everyone in the world. Common thread.

You can't say that with baseball or American Football or even basketball. That's what you are missing.... unless you have zero interest in what goes on outside your 'world'. Then it's fine.
The beautiful game

What a midfield:

How the feck do you compete? o_O o_O Kroos on the bench.

They add Mbappe and game over.

When my son played as a young boy, I got into it with him. But he doesn’t play or care anymore so I’m kinda out. I learned an appreciation for it, though, in those few years following (and playing FIFA 19 and 20). Now it’s onto hockey, another sport I knew nothing about. Hockey is awesome.

But yeah, I had friends from England who lived in Chicago 20 years ago. They’d take me to morning games at bars and we’d drink a lot and look at Brazilian girls and had a lot of fun.

USWNT catches a 2nd half spark and gets a 1-1 draw with the Orange in New Zeeland.
Gave up a 1st half goal on a stretch of poor play in the 1st half.
Lead the table on goal differential.

Anyone following the renovation of Camp Nou? Talk about a makeover. Will go to 105,000 seats, all covered.

Barca will play in the Olympic stadium next year, which only seats about 50,000. I've been in that place, and it's not that great. Plus, as the article mentions, it's not easy to get to as it sits on a very high hill with no mass transit to the stadium (other than buses). Camp Nou, on the other hand, is easily accessible from anywhere in the city.

One of my many mistakes was not seeing Messi play there. Was single. Had money. Had the opportunity. And never did it. A bucket list with a hole you can’t fix

Yeah, I had the chance to as well back in 2018. Was the last game of the season and I was offered a ticket for $50. I could have walked to Camp Nou from my hotel.

My biggest mistake was a deal I was working on here -- the client was a United supporter. He had a corporate box at OT. He told me to come over for this game:

I didn't want to be rushed over there (for the game) to sign the contract -- otherwise, I would lose some leverage in the negotiation.

Stupid ol' me.

I’ve been in Manchester for two weeks at a time (family there, otherwise why are you in Manchester for two weeks) twice in the last ten years. In season both times. Never able to attend a game. Will the next time I’m there. Or I’m getting divorced.

Amazing. I never knew that. He was one of the first names we learned as kids. Always on soccer digest etc. the old cosmos goalie brcic and the last president of us soccer dan Flynn and Taylor twellman’s dad Tim are all real close friends. It was a different world in the 70s and the NASL listening to their stories

St Louis SC is hot garbage. This match wasn't even close

Meh. Sort of. Stl is leading their conf in mls. Stl exploits the marginal players in mls of which there are many. Stl presses and waits for shitty mls defenders to cough it up then exploits it. Again that’s why Stl is in first place. It’s perfect for the league. Club America is quality. That style doesn’t work against technical teams capable of playing under pressure. In fact you get destroyed. Bottom line is club america is a good club. Stl City is a good mls club. You’re seeing the difference

As an aside I like Tony meola. He has a nice calm voice and breaks down the game well. I like him way better than twellman

Agreed, but god damn, Tony Meola looks like he's been eating at Old Country Buffet a bit too much.

In other words, you are saying MLS has a long ways to go before they are even decent in NA, let alone ever compete internationally.

Lol Tony is a good dude. And yes. He runs a club in Jupiter and just sits in a golf cart or on the bench lol. No not necessarily on mls. America is a top Mexican team. I think they might even be their historical best. So I think the very best of Mexico is better. But the bottom Mexican teams aren’t any better than mls. Mls still lacks balanced rosters. But all in all is totally competitive with Mexico and probably even save a handful of Mexican clubs that are a step above

We finally got a striker albeit a 20y.o kid. Long way from his peak years but at least we have a target man. He's is rapid and industrious. That will help him contribute in the early stages of his career.

I watched your boys play last night on tv. They will be good but not ready for prime time. I don’t follow them closely but mbappe would help immensely. Vini Jr and mbappe will be devastating. You could have something similar if you got him. But you guys still need a little more.

I also saw a little of Barca. I didn’t really see any improvement. Long way from champions league contender. And I don’t know why anyone likes dembele. He has a horrible touch. Is flakey as hell. He’s like Demarcus Beasley on roids

Dembele = can't move him so.......?

United need a proven striker/attacking option besides Rashford/Fernandes/Martial. Martial is injured way too much but I like him b/c he can play centrally and on the lft side (can be interchangeable to an extent wtih rashford). Rashford can play anywhere up top but is lesser as a central striker (unless United are counterattacking).

So many wingers and no striker. Garnacho is the real deal. White hair and new chompers. He'll have 3 kids within two years.

Pellistri might see some senior team time this season (off loan). Then again, maybe not.

Bayern will overpay for Kane. Not sure United wants to overspend on a 30 y/o never was that athletic for the Premier League striker.

Tough to gauge teams in pre-season.

United beat arsenal.
Real Madrid beat united. Then..
Arsenal beats Barca followed by
Barca beating Real Madrid.

Figure that one out!

But you are right. United ain't ready. At best we can show what ETH ball is this season... He's a pragmatic manager as shown at ajax. But I suspect we will have a system that is a hybrid between Pep's possession based approach and Klopp's heavy metal pressing philosophy.
We will HV super rapid frontline - rashford and this new kid Hojlund who is 6ft 3 (like you) but can run the 100m sub 11secs.

We won't play keep all for the sake of it like a pep system. We will be more vertical. Onana can ping those long balls directly to rashford and into empty spaces for him to chase.

Work in progress. It will be 2 seasons from now when we can compete -- we will HV some squad depth by then -- which to me is city's real superpower. No drop off from starting 11 and subs.

Kane as a package is out of the question. At least £100+million for transfer fee. Then kane wants like £450k-500k per week. Nice if you can get it!

And all that with no resale value since he is 30 already.

Hojlund is the most financially feasible buy which leads me to think they will bring back Greenwood immediately. (I would have preferred him to be loaned out a year to get his match fitness & sharpness back.)

It’s funny you say that and pep. Playing out of the back has just become the norm. But if you look at last night United/dort at least 75 percent of the chances/goals came from coughing it up while trying to play out of the back. That’s what Stl City does in mls. And they are in first place. But a technical team in the back makes them look like a jv team. Club America destroyed them. So back on point I wonder as more teams press others who aren’t man city will go old school and say F it. Enough playing it out. Just get it out!

Route 1 can still work if you get a couple dime playing CB's and super athletic/physical strikers up front.

The dime playing CB's are expensive though.

Absolutely. But there is no trip I hate more than route 1. It’s so funny. We had 60,000 people sign up for 18,000 season tix here. The stadium is simply breathtaking. The atmosphere is phenomenal. The concessions are delicious and all local. City SC is pure perfection for a fan experience. And they roll out a style of play that is wholly unwatchable for me. Simply awful. Figures ….

With Onana it's not so strictly going to be played from the back. He pings the ball pretty well.

I understand the logic of playing out from the back.. but honestly watching peps teams can be quite boring. They lull you to sleep.

The godfather of possession ball was LVG. He was horrible to watch... But good for my sleep health though.
I have never fallen asleep as much as I have under LVG. Barely made it pass halftime 50% of the time.

I like my footie to be higher risk. That's why it was great with Fergie. He is a horse racing guy. Like the gambling factor.
High risk high returns

Yeah, but I love counterattacking. So I guess Route 1 might be a bit simplistic. I'll rephrase and say "more direct counterattacking".

You and sgl.
Nothing sexier than a quick counter and goal. I mean, Barca in the late aughts/early teens but ain't many teams gonna do that in the Premier League.

I think United will get there in a few years (ETH ball that is). Need a few more transfer windows and that sweet sweet oil money.

Edit: And I HATE that I love watching City. And Liverpool when they were on it. It hurt

Thank you for recognizing Soccer perfection. Anywayyyyyyyy I told you I have a buddy from Aberdeen who loves parking the bus 🤣. So absurd. He calls it braveheart soccer

Another new incoming manager with his own hybrid approach:

Unlike the typical small, promoted team, Rayo did not park the bus; instead, they took it for a ride, and it was wild. “He doesn’t want the game to be under control: he wants things to happen,” says their midfielder Mario Suárez. “Rob in the opposition’s half, direct, open the pitch, get into the area.”

“I prefer too much chaos to too much organisation. I prefer to play at a high pace, even if it means a touch of hastiness, than play at a lower pace and have a bit more control.”

Will be an interesting club to watch -- for entertainment purposes at least. Sounds like a Bielsa protege but there is more to him.

This is why the PL is by far the best -- top managers with different philosophies. Even at Bournemouth, his budget will be the equivalent of the 5th best team in La Liga!
