Bigger than Pelé and the Cosmos?!? I remember that when it happened. I don't think I agree with you. Without Pelé, Messi is not playing in the U.S. tonight. Pelé essentially brought soccer to the U.S. (sorry Kyle Rote, Jr., it wasn't you). I knew nothing about the game before Pelé arrived. Shortly after, I was playing junior high soccer - but it was essentially intramural because no other junior high had a team. And Pelé was the only player that mattered to us. His last game (Cosmos v. Santos) was a worldwide event, televised on Wide World of Sports no less (not some pay service like MLS). Pelé played for the Cosmos the first half and Santos for the second half. You think they would ever have Messi do something like that? Hell no. He's great, but he's not Pelé.

He was everywhere in the mid 70s. Was more famous for winning Superstars and his commercials than he was for playing soccer. Everyone knew he played soccer but only because they said he was on Superstars and his commercials.
Amazing. I never knew that. He was one of the first names we learned as kids. Always on soccer digest etc. the old cosmos goalie brcic and the last president of us soccer dan Flynn and Taylor twellman’s dad Tim are all real close friends. It was a different world in the 70s and the NASL listening to their stories

Preseason invitational this weekend. Best part of the high school “season”. Reg season is ok in Carmels league. But the preseason invitational is most of the best teams in the state. Outside of Hamilton county anyway.
