Self checkout always had a leakage component. Some theft, some user error. I think companies now have a full data set and are evaluating the economics. Talked to a guy a bit ago who is a site ops guy for Aldi. Even Aldi, which is not a high theft property, was seeing much higher than expected leakage.

There's a need for both. Most places say 10 items or more you have to use a regular check out, but if you are just trying to get a few things, it's quicker and easier to do self checkout.
