There's a case to be made for ignoring the debt ceiling, that the spending authorization effectively is what determines the debt and the ceiling is an artificial construct that can't limit the power of Congress to spend money.

Anyone that tells you that Speaker Johnson, or any Speaker for that matter, has the singular ability to pass a CR with 100% of the thing you want and none of the things you don’t want is lying to you, stop being so easy to lie to. He’s a coalition builder, not a king.

A clean CR would be great. But Trump and Vance wan’t 110 billion in farm and disaster relief giveaways to predominately red areas. As well as a raised debt ceiling so he doesn’t have to worry about it his first year in office.

To get that, obviously, Democrats will also come to the table with their pork.

So what we have is Trump/ Vance negotiating a CR with Mike Johnson and Democrats. The CR comes to the floor, Musk and Vivek go scorched earth on it, now Trump/ Vance are sawing off the limb behind Johnson and making demands that Democrat’s will never grant.

I worry DOGE might be nothing more than a louder, more powerful, freedom caucus.
