I was registered a Republican from 1980-2005. I registered as an independent after I moved to FL in 2005.

But the Republican party has abandoned all principles & common sense.

It also sucks to be an Independent in Florida, since it prevents you from voting in EITHER primary.

Dad would be disappointed, but oh well. I can't stand my President and what he did to what used to be my party.

Good for you.

Tom Brady is still a douche.

My parents were Republican , but they occasionally voted for Democrats, especially if the whole rest of the family felt strongly about someone. But they would have detested Trump .

Welcome. I hope you didn’t give out your email, or make a donation while changing your registration. There’s not a more persistent, annoying, but effective group of on line solicitors out there than the DNC. They send an army of “personalized” requests for donations on a daily basis, hoping they find the one you will respond to. Tom Perez always gets me after I’ve had a few.

Gmail has already learned to send all DNC emails directly to spam. God bless AI.

That’s good to know. I actually don’t mind it as much as I pretend. I don’t mind donating at this critical time in our political situation, and I play my own game against the DNC game. Perez gets money when I’m drinking IPA’s. A few others get a donation from a little gin or vodka. Yet a few more may succeed after a bit of weed. It doesn’t matter who panders if Im drinking good whiskey. They get the biggest donation. Hillary and a few others that I’ve never heard of, make me want to shoot myself. Lol!

I did it online at registerrovoteflorida.gov

Gave my gmail address, hopefully doesn't cause me to get a lot of junk.

Like Goat said, sounds like gmail sends it to your junk folder. Otherwise, you’d be getting a “real talk’” solicitation from Perez, or some fluffy bullshit from one of the other army of prominent Dems.

I was registered GOP long before Trump became POTUS. I expect to be registered GOP after he is gone. I don't think he has done anything permanently adverse to my party. In fact he has done a number of things that are in the GOP wheelhouse. Tax reform, regulatory reform, moving the courts back to a modicum sensibility, and building up the military. Yeah, I'm not crazy about his tweets, deportment, or tariffs, but I learned years ago nobody can get all the want all the time. Being content with some of what you want some of the time is a key to well-being.

He is an unfit imbecile. He’s the most dangerous man to ever occupy the office, and his mission seems to be to destroy every institution and democratic value this country stands for. Congratulations.

I said during the presidential campaign, that anyone who supports this man is either dangerously irresponsible, dangerously stupid/naive, or dangerously racist. I still stand by that. You appear to be dangerously irresponsible.

I say this as someone that has a new found respect for the traditional Republican Party. Trump has a way of making you long for stability, and healthy policy debates. Who knows, if we survive him, maybe his legacy will be the guy who was so openly toxic, it brought back civility and bipartisanship?

I fear that we will see a lot of mini-me type campaigning in both parties for the future, the name calling, the personal insults, etc. It’s quite a legacy Trump will be leaving to the American public.

I can kinda see that. I've been able to see some of my past views were probably over the line, and I'm now more than happy to talk with reasonable conservatives. I also realize that there are some in my own party that are not worthy of support. Indiana Democratic chairman's John Zody was very disappointing when Governor Holcomb voiced his support for hate crimes legislation. The whole game of "attack them even when they agree with you" looks so petty anymore. Obviously, Mike Braun played the same game with the Kavanaugh nomination.

Also, it's interesting how mild-mannered proudly bipartisan Joe Donnelly seems like the perfect man for this time. He's almost as lucky as Claire McCaskill when it comes to elections. He still may lose, Indiana is just tough for a Dem, but he would have definitely lost in 2014 and 2016.

Nuance isn't your strength.

Not a very nuanced comment. If all Democrats keep believing this they may never win another election.

healthy policy debates.

LOL. See your second paragraph.

I originally registered as a Republican in 2009. Generally voted for Democrats with very few exceptions. Switched to independent a few years ago (don't recall when exactly). Changed from independent to Democrat immediately after Trump was elected. I am also a Florida voter and was unable to vote for Sanders in the primary, otherwise I prefer to remain independent. Just requested my absentee ballot for the Aug 28th primary.

I prefer less government on a whole host of issues, which is why I was originally a Republican.

My current stance is this: I prefer the least amount of government necessary to carry out its basic duties with the highest level of efficacy. However, I also support a strong safety net for the worst off among us as the alternative is ugly. I very strongly believe in competitive capitalism and support strong government regulation to enforce the competitive part. The competitive part is missing in our current version.

The republican party has completely lost me on one count... Their increasing religiosity. They are no longer a small government, conservative party. They are an outlet for big government evangelicals. That is not conservative.

My parents were republican until Reagan. The all out war on unions and ridiculous tax cuts for the wealthy turned them both off. They never bought into the trickle down BS. By the end of his second term they were pretty much done with the entire party top to bottom. They never registered D though.

I have it right. There is no gradation to Trump hate. It’s all monotone in the extreme.

If someone crapped in your bedroom every day for a year, then also started crapping in your driveway, would you be interested in hearing about the nuanced difference between them? Or would you just want the crap to stop?

Nuance may be there strong point.

Bannon says they have basically given up on college educated Republican women. They know they’ve lost their vote. No wonder I don’t have any friends that support him. Next it’s time for the college educated men to catch on.

Good luck with the new democratic socialist party.

Trump is only a symptom of a formerly responsible party that has been overtaken by short-sighted greed and self-interest.

Now you are just making stuff up cuz Trump. The rent seekers are pretty evenly distributed with a slight nod to the DemocratS IMO. I don’t see a big bubble of greed in the GOP. I see a big bubble of pandering with the objective of power and influence on both sides.

I'll agree both parties have become entangled in special interests. But the anti-government rhetoric on the right seems to go beyond criticism of program waste to questioning the worthiness of the recipients.

I see what your problem is. There are ideas in play with the Trump presidency that have nothing to do with "shit in the bedroom." I think those ideas are more important than his dumbass tweets. Those who see Trumpism through the dull sameness of his lame-brain tweets will miss important stuff.

If you are talking about Elon Musk and those who get a government subsidy to buy expensive Tesla automobiles, and get a free ride on road tax to boot, I heartily agree.

There were many shysters who took the proceeds of government-backed loans to do various kinds of projects in the "new energy economy." All those went bust for reasons that should have been obvious, you can't create scientific and technological advancements with politics and government hand-outs. Those who paid themselves with those loan proceeds are long gone. We are holding the bag.

No, I wasn't talking about Elon Musk. And the alternative energy economy lives on, by the way.

But we digress. I know you've seen the articles of prominent Republicans leaving the party recently. I think there's more to that than just Trump. My wife is a lifelong Kansas Republican who, apparently like you, still holds out hope for the party. But she's at a loss to explain her party's support for this President.

Not true. Many of us seek to be fair and treat it issue by issue. He doesn’t give us a lot of opportunities to defend him though. You on the other hand are as un-nuanced in your blinkered defenses of him as you accuse the other side of being. You hide behind vacuous criticism of tweets, and other relatively innocuous criticisms while ignoring the big picture which is that he is undeniably cozying up to Putin, has signed tax reform into law that is increasing the deficit (how Republican of him), and still has campaign rallies like this is a banana republic.

Musk sure stirs up all sorts of emotions in you.

I don’t get the republican obsession with Musk.

I don’t think the party “supports” this president much at all. He barged in on the process totally without party support. There is more party opposition to some of his ideas than for any presidential of either party in recent memory. However, as I said in other posts, there are ideas in play that have been in the GOP playbook for decades. Trump and the party in general actually agree with some of those. I don’t see the problem with that.

I can’t speak for those who claim to have left the party. All I can say about that is that I don’t see the disaster that others see. I guess that is because I don’t see POTUS as having the same power and influence that others see. Too bad for them.

Actually my emphasis was on the smug rich people who lsupport high taxes on the rich while they take a subsidy to buy expensive automobiles and skate on paying road taxes.

Yet you always mention Musk by name, add him to conversations on your own, and/or jump in with your typical emotional responses if/when someone else brings up Musk.

I know, I know, nuance and stuff...
