Reese Taylor

CB and punt return. Might occasionally line up at WR, but CB will be his predominant position
I have to be honest... I'm not too happy to see one of the most dynamic offensive players in recent IHSAA history converting to CB. His senior year was something special, to say the least. But if that is his ticket to playing on Sundays, then more power to him and all the blessings in the world.

What I saw of him in high school had me thinking we had another Randle El coming in. That doesn't seem to be the case, but he could be a weapon as a punt return specialist. He will also know what to do if he gets his hands on an interception.

Your post takes me back to something from years ago. As a starting point, the objective of playing college football is to put players in the best position to help you win games regardless of what their future NFL position may be. Remember when Randle-El was going into his senior year and Cam Cameron got a brain fart and moved him to wide receiver with Tommy Jones playing quarterback, in part to audition him for the position he was most likely to play in the pros? He takes the ball out of the hands of his best play maker who would handle the ball 60 times as quarterback and puts him in a position where he will be lucky to see the ball 5 times a game. The experiment lasts 3 or 4 games, with no success and Randle-El returns to QB, but too late to salvage the season. And of course Randle-El goes on to be a productive NFL receiver regardless of the position he played in college.

My recollection is that we got whipped (played out east somewhere), and the experiment lasted that one game. It also blew a year of eligibility for Jones, who I think was originally going to red shirt and hoped to be the starter the following year with his last year of eligibility. But don't hold me to any of that...

It cost Cam his job. We lost badly to NC State. We lost a very winnable game late to Utah. Had ARE been the QB from get go that season he would’ve been better than he was when he started the game against Utah. We finished on a roll but ended up 5-6. Cam was sent packing. 6-5 would have got him an extension. And he could still be here today. While he was a terrible NFL HC, I feel he could have been a decent CFB HC.

Accept not sure where he would have gotten players. I had heard he had alienated most of the head coaches in Indiana.

If he were still here today, that would be 23 years as a HC, and would make him one of the longest serving coaches in conference history (maybe top 5?). That’s doubtful

Tommy redshirted as a freshman so his RS opportunity had passed.

Tommy played a year after the Randel El experiment year. Started for a while and was benched for Gibran Hamden.

When that senior transfer QB decided to not play (I forget his name and I think it happened right after Ramsey was named the starter), it forced us to move Reese to back up QB and then they kept him on the O side.
I do like him on defense and we will need everything we can to win in our division.
I wonder if we can upset OSU? Early game for their new coach and at Bloomington. PSU may be less strong this year.

I don't think you are wrong here...but defense is how you win games and championships. Many coaches believe you put your best on the D...so do I...but its just opinion.

I don't really share the optimism about the coaching change at OSU. He did coach the first 3 games last year and really they were better in those games than when Urban came back. That is not to say we cant beat them just that it will be because we were better that day and not the coaching change.

There’s a lot more that goes into coaching than game day, and that is where HC duties are focused. Does Day know how to effectively coordinate/manage the off-season and strength and conditioning, direct and supervise assistant coaches, mentor players, and doing so with significantly less time interacting with players/coaches because of media and admin duties?

If there are some hiccups/struggles for OSU under Day this year, it will be predominantly because of things that have already happened, or will happen in the next 2-3 weeks

Yes, and those things tend to take a couple of years to start rearing their head. I wouldn't count on that big of a drop off this year if any.

Urban was put on leave before training camp last year. Day ran the team all of camp and the first 3 games. Urban was not allowed any contact with the team during that period. Day will be fine.

The story at the time was that ARE wasn’t coming back unless Cam let him try WR.

Al D’Amato and Phillip Rivers ended the experiment in one half.

ARE was a solid teammate for giving it up and playing QB all year.

Firing Mallory gutted this program and cost IU recruiting relationships for a decade.

Cam never had a chance.
DiNardo never had a chance.
Had to pay our penance.

I wasn't alive for the Anthony Carter "fumble," but have watched the replay several times. Heard some funny stories in the aftermath. But that was 100% a terrible call.

Dakitch was discussing replay last week on his radio show, and that game popped into my head. I wonder if the officials with replay today would have the sack to end the game with that throw out of bounds like they should have.

That would be true if it was a completely new staff, That isn’t the case with them. Their Strength & Conditioning coach, director of player development and head of player support all stayed on with Day. As mentioned before, there will be little or no change. On the field, he will call plays with Wilson in the box (just like last year) Recruiting wise, he currently has the no.4 class in the country.

I personally believe they are a mystery. How good is Fields? The lack of depth behind him has got to be a concern for him. On paper, in the pre season, there looks to be a chance for a upset.

Don’t forget they also added Mike Yurcich from Ok State as passing game coordinator not sure how many play callers you need.

Still think there's going to be a drop-off at some point since Urban was an elite coach. OSU is a machine and will be very good even with an average coach running it but they could take a step or two back even if Day ends up being good, but not great.

Just to clarify something. The Michigan Intentional Fumble out of Bounds was made by one of the Michigan Running Backs (Stanley Edwards, I believe). It wasn't like the "Holy Roller' type fumble from the Oakland Raiders game years ago that led to an NFL Rule Change. This was a deliberate throw out of bounds. Carter was the recipient of the winning touchdown pass on the next play on what turned out to be the last play of the game, which should have never occurred if the Officials had called the penalty and applied the rule correctly.

Thank you for the info crossblock. You made me want to so some research onnit. According to a Michigan site it was fullback Lawrence Reid,. I have read conflicting stories on whether or not the fumble was legal at the time.

John Cooper and Earle Bruce do not like this post.

Michigan fans think it was legal.

Myself, I'm not sure. One could construe it as a lateral and, therefore, a legal play. But anyone with half a brain could see that it was an intentional 'fumble', and may have even been a forward pass, in which case the game should have been over.

Either way, Michigan gets the call. Again. In my mind, it's no worse a transgression than the 'interception' made by Michigan when our WR came down with the ball. Or no worse than the Desmond Howard 'Defensive Holding' call. There are many others, but those stand out in my mind.

The BiG will not - cannot - call an even game when we're playing O$U or Michigan. It's against the conference DNA. Follow the money.

if it was legal, then literally every entire football staff for the entire history of football preceding that play, must feel pretty stupid not knowing they could stop the clock anytime they wanted to, just by any player who has the ball throwing the ball out of bounds.

Reese is right where he needs to be: DB
Watched him in the spring game and he appears to be a more natural fit in the defensive backfield. He didn't seem to have much impact in the WR slot last year. Seemed out of sorts. I'm sure a lot of that can be explained as freshman jitters but he didn't make any jaw-dropping plays out there.
He will likely be returning punts this year. I think he will do well there.

Agreed...and I would imagine that this young man, his circle of friends, supporters, counselors and coaches all see "Sunday" as his ultimate goal.

Reese's best play of the season came on literally his first touch during which he went from sideline to sideline and gained about thirty yards, IIRC.

I find it fascinating that Tre Roberson is a CB in the CFL and, to my recollection, never played a down on defense in his years at IU or Illinois State. The pros figure out what you are.
