question on Iowa BB

to 2 of the best teams in the BT,
last season they went 8-5 in the OOC this year they are 10-0 and won the Y2 Classic by beating #13 Oregon at that time and then UConn who beat #16 Syracuse.
they also beat Iowa State who was favored to beat Iowa. its not the same about beating Savanah State this season its about them playing DEFENSE to win the early games.
the players finally woke up and now realize they need to play defense to win games vs trying to outscore everybody they play,
last season they didn't listen to the coaches when it came to playing defense and they had their asses handed to them.
adding Wieskamp who is 6'6 with a wingspan of 7'0 at the 3 who plays defense is/was a upgrade over Wagner
adding Connor a 6'5 PG was a much needed player that was missing last season. Connor now allows Jordan to move to the 2/SG position too take advantage of his 3 point shooting.
last season these players played out of position far to often
7' Nunge played the 3 when he should have played the 4 or 5
Dailey played the 1 when he should have played the 2 or 3
Baer they tried to make him a starter after he came back from injury when he is at his best as the teams 6th man. he was the BT 6th MOY in his RSSO season and this season he is back to being the 6th man again and is playing like he did as a RSSO.
this season the pieces are there to have a very good sesason. BUT DEFENSE will determine how far they go this season as scoring will not be a problem as the returned 76.3 ppg off a team that avg'd 79.9 ppg.

going back to the seasons from 2012 thru 2016 the best ADJ Defense was #33 and the worst was #75, those season by 4 year starters recorded the 3rd best win total in Iowa's history.
so yes Fran knows how to coach defense and he was a Assistant Coach at ND for 7 years. where he learned how to coach
last season the players didn't listen to him and because of not listening they got their asses handed to them. you know sometimes the coaches actually know what they are talking about.
as a coach you can talk till you are biue in the face, but it does not do any good when the players just know that they know better than the coaches.
I once coached a women's Softball team made up of former College players and the 1st game they just knew how to put the rotation together and what positions they wanted to play.
I told them to go ahead while I would sit in the stands. they had outfielders playing in positions they had never played before. their batting order was a disaster waiting to happen,
well the result was no where close to what they were counting on
thank god for the mercy rule as they scored just 1 run while giving up 30 in 3 innings
like I told them after them to let me coach while they listen to me and let me coach, it was either that or I would quit.
moral of the story they let me coach and they listened to what I told them. they didn't lose another game until the State Finals for Women's Softball

I predict Iowa and Nebby finish ahead of IU by season’s end in the conference. IU is probably somewhere around our usual 6-8 place finish.
I think that the majority opinion is that no one here cares about Iowa! Give it a rest and come back when Iowa is relevant.

they have 4 4* players by Rivals now and 6 4* players by ESPN 4 of them were Top 100 payers.
This hasn’t been a place to talk Indiana or college basketball since the previous owners jumped ship to Scout / 247. This place is a wasteland now. The Iowa board is more knowledgeable than here.
2014 Crean had how many 4/5 stars? How many burger boys? And just how good were they?

It’s funny that a lot of Iowa fans, who now are wanting Fran fired, thought we were “entitled brats” for wanting Crean fired and he was so much better than McCaffery just because he won two Big 10 championships in 5 years. If you compare his and Crean’s records during the last 5 years Crean was here, you’ll see that his and McCaffery’s records in conference play were exactly the same (IU won SIX more games overall) and with the exception of those championship years, Iowa finished higher in the conference standings than we did. Luckily, our AD finally wised up and understood that mediocrity isn’t going to fly here.
You've got some really, really nice players that I would take on IU in a heartbeat. Cook is a stud. Wieskamp looks like is going to be a real pain in the ass going forward. He is a classic Iowa player like Uthoff, Gisele, Street, Gatens, Bowen, Settles. A goofy cornbread farmer boy who can just ball and has a little goon in him.
Here is the deal. You've always had really good players. The Iowa Barnstormers are and has been one of the best AAU programs for the past twenty years. You didn't get Paige or Harrison Barnes...but you got the Woodbury's and Jok's and Uthoff's and Garza's and Wieskamp's, etc.
You've underperformed with a lot of talent under Fran.
Maybe that magically changes this year (like when Beiline brought in a defensive coordinator recently which has transformed their program) but there has been too many years, too many hot starts and too many underperforming teams under Fran to believe that the end results will be much different unless there is a massive talent upgrade to overcome Fran.
You should be a tournament team, maybe play in game. Kindof where you were with your last really talented team that completely underperformed.
The maddening and fun part of this year is that other than Michigan...anyone can beat anyone at anywhere. Even Rutgers isn't Rutger's bad and can beat anyone at home.
the biggest problem is they were either FR or SO's and they only had 1 SR leader in the 2 years and that was Jok. and look at what he did.

that's a lot for any team to replace from 1 year to the next. when I watched those players as FR to many times they stood around waiting for Jok to take over as the leader
last season they didn't have a SR leader and it showed, there was no SR leader to follow, injuries didn't help.
this year Baer is that SR leader that leads by example. key stats that made him the BT 6th MOY so far this season

1.1 bpg 1st
Wieskamp was rated 42nd by Rivals so it is my guess he is pretty good. his addition filled a big hole at the 3, Baer was/is not a starter.
Connor is the PG that was needed last season to take a lot of pressure of Bohannon
this years team is only one year removed from 6 straight winning seasons. its no where near what it was like under Lick when they avg'd 5 BT wins per season.
Fran sits in 3rd place in BT wins and overall wins.

Iowa beat a struggling and overrated Oregon team that was missing one of its top two guys. That Oregon team was so bad that it lost Texas Southern, and then to a very poor Baylor team.. Then Iowa beat an Iowa St team missing two players including their starting PG. Your defense is rated in the 90's, if you dumbasses think that's good defense, well, maybe you need a less complicated sport to watch because you don't have a clue about this one.

he also has a 6'11 center in 4* Garza that is rebounding
Wieskamp came out of HS where he avg'd 13.6 rpg, 6'6 with a 7' wingspan
Iowa does a good job of sharing the ball both in shooting and rebounding this year he is 2nd in apg. not bad for a 6'9 PF that leads the team in scoring and rebounding. 16.7 ppg, 8.3 rpg

the committee got away from the RPI and are getting away from Kenporn and are using the BPI and this new NET rankings.
very few even refer to kenpom.
PER and Eff ratings though "good" ... overall are not near "stud" level.
Look at Cook vs Morgan, Ward, Wesson, Happ .. ie real studs.

the new metric has Iowa at #36, and it has been stated that it will be 1/3rd of the metric used in determining the field

this years team has far more talent than it ever had under Indiana's Golden Boy Alford.
one more note Crean had more 4 and 5* players in state each year than Iowa has in 6-8 years, the last couple years the uptick in 4* players instate is getting better and Fran is starting to keep that grown in state players.
PG Carton was a player from New Orleans so he never had a in state connection to any of the in state schools.
now that the instate kids are getting more exposure on the AAU circuit and earning their stripes this team will keep getting better
even Foster in the 2020 class with 247 5 crystal balls 100% to Iowa. the 5th crystal ball was for Kentucky and now he flipped to Iowa. Patrick is #50 by ESPN. top 100 4* by the other services.
Cook is a stud for Iowa...and he would be a stud on our team.
I respect efficiency stats as the next guy but in total it can overstate the impact of fat asses (or 7 foot 6 guys) who can hit layups in the post with no regard to how that player impacts the total team (defensively, transition, etc).
Cook is a power forward. He should be in the pool with Stevens, Murphy, Justin Smith in my opinion. I believe his efficiency numbers match up really well when compared to those dudes.
Maybe budding stud or high ceiling impact player is a better term for Cook than stud. Lol

Wow! “Accurate feedback” isn’t what you want to hear. I’ll try to spell it out so that maybe you will go away.
1) Most fans here don’t care about Iowa until they play IU
2) Most think Fran is a crappy coach
3) Most think Iowa has played a crappy non-con schedule
4) Some think Iowa has some nice talent
5) Most feel until Iowa starts to win conference games or play IU they are irrelevant
Save some time and don’t respond with more “stats” and “theories” because no one cares (until Iowa plays IU).
