I saw the Hoosier huddle article about portal guys in. Some had portal grades. Top 3 were QB, WR, and OL. Does anyone know how that grading works?
I really thought O’Rourke had a super high IQ. He just seemed to not make mistakes. Not to mention playing with a torn ACL and the last three games with a bad thumb. Seems a high bar for Mendoza to match.

You're just begging me to write my annual "I'm not sure these guys are good enough to play in the Big Ten" aren't you... 😉

I admit I'm being lazy... I'll try to get around to it sometime soon...

I've broken this down in other threads quite a bit and have all the stats to back this up, but there are 2 main things to consider when discussing Rourke's (O'Rourke :p) success last year and predicting Mendoza's success next season. 1st is that Coach Cig has a phenomenal record of elevating his starting QB's play and has had multiple, like 6, 1st team all conference QB's as a HC. 3 of them won POTY. Rourke played his best season ever by far in his one and only season under Cig and there is no reason to believe that Mendoza won't make the same leap as so many other QB's have done under Cig's tutelage. 2nd is that Mendoza is only a sophomore, so when comparing him to Rourke at the same stage in their careers, you can clearly see that Mendoza compiled far superior stats. He also did that in the P12 and the ACC, which is a lot better competition than the MAC.

Rourke was ranked #21 last year for portal QB's on 247 and Mendoza was ranked #3 this year. On3 has a composite from multiple ratings sites for overall rankings and Rourke was #441 last year and Mendoza was #20 this year. On3 had Rourke as the #17 QB and Mendoza at #5 this year. Mendoza is the best QB Cig has ever recruited as a HC. Cig has a 20+ year proven track record of getting his QB's to excel and I'm not betting against him now. Mendoza will get the best coaching he's ever had and be given an offense that highlights his strengths. That's what Cig does for his QB's every season and the results have been beyond impressive.

I'm an eternal optimist since I'm a lifelong IU football fan, but I say this without my crimson colored glasses: There is every single reason to believe that Mendoza will have a better season this year than Rourke did last year.

Out of all the kids that we got from the portal, only three didn't start most of the year for their former team and were highly productive last year.

Two were hurt all or most of the year last year and one played for the national champion on the offensive line.

We did pretty well, I think.

I have always felt a difference between us and the OSU and UMich, etc was depth. When they bring in a back up there is minimal talent drop off. Hopefully we are moving in that direction. Injuries are always going to happen. Our three RBs last year kept people fresh and running hard which is a big aid to the passing game.
Looking forward to spring ball to see what we have.

I think the players coming back and the portal players, the team will be better this year. We will have to wait until gets going, about the Illinois game, to know if it is better.
I am hopeful we will be better. The schedule looks harder, so even a better team could have more losses than last year. I think we need to (and hopefully can) beat some of the “traditional” big guys. That would go a long way to proving we are moving from the team everyone schedules for their home coming game to a team you have to plan for.

It all starts in the trenches. Teams like OSU and Michigan are getting nothing but can’t-miss 4-star and 5-star studs every year in their recruiting to play on the offensive and defensive lines. That’s where it starts and ends. And, if they go to the portal, they get the same. That’s why they are elite.

I got to think IU is better next season. Cignetti is in a much more favorable spot than last year at this time.

I hope you're right but at the moment I'm looking at who we've lost and it's looking to me like we're missing the heart of or Defense (our two graduated DT's and Walker our LB) and the heart of our Offense (our C, QB and TE).,,That's a Lot of consistent production to try to make up...

Throw in a schedule that looks tougher this Fall and we appear to have our work cut out for us...

I'm not saying they can't do it, I'm just saying they're going to have a more difficult path this time around...

We're better with a more difficult schedule, but I like our 2025 team. We're in it to win it!:)

I'm trying to ease you guys into my now annual "I'm not sure these guys can play in the Big Ten post" a little bit at a time so it won't come as such a jolt...(I'm afraid someone will report me and get me tossed from the board this time around 🤣).

We have three All-American defensive players returning.
Not too sure you thought very much about this before posting.

Sure, but this year 60% of the team has been through a season with these guys. Last year only 13 had that experience. Should be ahead of last year right out of the gate.

We should be better offensively, and might be a touch better on defense if the two new DT are good. One thing to note is Cignetti and our GM Matt Wilson are phenomenal talent appraisers- both in the portal and in traditional high school recruiting.

Offensively:
LT: Carter Smith--should continue to make improvement steps
LG: Evans was hurt last year--no clue when he is back, so maybe it is Benson or Bray Lynch
C: Katic had a great year and an awesome dude that was somewhat limited athletically. Coogan is an upgrade on talent level and definitely looks like he will fill a leadership spot
G: Lynch or Benson
RT: Benson or Michalski (who potentially could play guard).

On paper, this could be a really, really good OL. We also have some depth, with a couple of the true freshmen from last year being internally well regarded.

QB. Mendoza is really good. Tough to be better than Rourke though, but Mendoza is going to be able to move around bit. Can't afford an injury there though
RB: Losing Ellison hurts the most, but we have some really good guys coming in along with some depth. We should be far more dynamic in the running game.
WR: The group has the potential to be excellent--there is a bit more overall speed on the field, and we struggled a bit at times against teams playing man and pressuring us last year. We might see a freshman like Bond play some serious minutes.
TE: Horton was awesome last year--most technically proficient blocking TE I have seen in college.

If Mendoza can play like he did last year (or better), or offense will be better and we have some real home run threats in the backfield now

Defensively:
DT: The huge question mark. West and Carpenter were awesome. They also played a ton of snaps. Wheeler played more snaps than Carpenter last year, which is saying something, and he can play the NT or 3T, and he's damn good. Ratcliffe is the traditional 3T, and he's great on film. Tucker provides some really good depth. Burris is the question mark. Every staff that has coached Burris in college says he has NFL talent with an NFL body, but it just hasn't translated yet. Still, he stuck around, and we need him to play a significant role. Losing West is a big loss--almost irreplaceable. Still, this is very much a quality interior DL. We might be down a notch, but we should see some growth. Monette and Harrison are just guys at this point. I don't see them doing much. Good opportunity for young guys to maybe contribute
DE: Kamara back--GIGANTIC. A great young man who has a huge goal in front of him--first round draft pick. I wouldn't bet against him. The SDE is likely going to be Landino for one more year until he slides inside. The young guys like Ndukwae and collins must step up--not a ton of depth. All eyes on Caden Curry following this spring as to whether he sticks around. He'd be ideal in this system
LB: FIsher is awesome. Staff loves Rojan Hardy but impossible to replace Walker's energy, speed and athleticism. Jones is a plugger--not a lot of depth, but we signed two fantastic HS lb in Farmer and Nelson, and both can run. Probably a little drop off that decreases as the year goes on.
Rover position--Farrell was great here and amazing at safety--I would guess that he will stick to safety unless one of the new guys from the portal is not a better fit for the rover position. Maybe Boyd will have progressed.
S: Farrell and Louis Moore would be a fantastic pairing. Boykin here is well, and he could slot in to safety if healthy and kick moore or farrell down to the rover to ensure best 11.
CB: Really nice upgrade with Gandy and Knighten playing at one of the corners. Sharpe is back and now we are a really solid 4 deep with the bell cow ponds. Johnson had a decent year last year--he played his best football, but we had to play a lot of off coverage with him because he lacked some speed.

My guess is that the staff, if they had anyone, it will be a DE and LB. That may change if there are injuries during spring.

Cig's comments from yesterday were illuminating--he talked about it being a good day, and most importantly, he talked about how our Strength coach had reported all winter that the players were dialed in with the weight room and running program.

We might not go 11-1 again, but we have a chance to be a better team than last year. Fingers crossed--should be a fun season to watch. Really hard to bet against Cignetti.

Same for me, no argument. Lot more equipped at the LOS.
If a solid TE hits the mark I wonder if he wouldn't end up wearing C&C.

Great post Mark. Nice to see it all put together. The one thing you brought up that scares me is the possibility of Mendoza getting hurt. Let’s hope the kid from Old Dominion can handle it if that happens.

Sure, but this year 60% of the team has been through a season with these guys. Last year only 13 had that experience. Should be ahead of last year right out of the gate.

I don’t think the chance of Mendoza getting hurt is higher than that of any other QB. The o-line looks solid and Rourke was well protected outside of the Michigan and Ohio State games. And both of those teams have elite players on the d-line.

Been a lot of years since IU made it through a full season with a QB getting hurt.

Getting Evans back healthy may be more important for our line play than he previously was given credit for. Note he missed the Michigan, OSU & ND games.

Yeah, I think his loss was more costly than they let on. Coming back from that injury though may take a while.
