Consider this unofficial info but I compared the 2021 roster with the 2022 roster. There are 112 players listed on the current 2022 roster on the iufb website. I counted 56 players from last year's squad who either graduated, declared for the NFL draft, entered the transfer portal or otherwise left. That's literally half of the roster. I realize the transfer portal has changed the offseason dynamic but this still seems like a very high number. Taken together with the coaching turnover / new coordinators it may be unrealistic not to expect some growing pains.

(Note: I am more than happy to crowdsource this. Feel free to add additional info if you have it or to correct any mistakes I have unintentionally made. I don't have an editor to bail me out lol. I just ask for a source - if you don't have one I won't make an update.)

You’re hitting on something that a few of us have been saying for awhile. The turnover here is heavy, with the top end (fourth and fifth year guys) and the newbies (incoming and redshirt frosh) having big proportions of the total player and depth chart count. That, plus five new coaches (including three on offense) makes this an uncertain way going into the season. As I said a few weeks ago, we cleaned house (pushed some players and at least one coach out) and the house cleaned us (some players and coaches decided they wanted out). It’s a major overhaul and putting that new team on the field will, as you said, likely have some growing pains. It’s why I think four or five wins would represent real progress, even though I know we’d be disappointed with missing a bowl game.

Good info. Thanks.

No question there's some talent in the group that left, and I wish them all the best, but look where they're going. With the exception of Penix and Taylor, none of the transfer outs enrolled at a P5 school. Conversely, many of the transfer ins are from strong P5 programs. Looks like a significant net gain. Not surprisingly, a number of publications have noted that IU did well in the transfer portal.

Go Hoosiers!

This comprehensive list really shows just how few guys transfer out to bigger programs or even make lateral moves (MP and Reese the only 2). So many of them drop down to the MAC, Sun Belt etc or even lower levels. Many don’t hook on anywhere, either by their choice or just no offers. Portal is a good idea, but has resulted in a lot of Unintended Consequences for both sides.

I think it is indicative of the fact that we were 2-12 and did not win game in the Big Ten, and there was a lot of talk about players quitting. So what do you do about? Overhaul the roster, make coaching changes, etc. And that is what happened. We shall see soon if it worked.

These players left for their own reasons, for those that were welcome to come back... primarily it comes down to PT

Do you have any data with respect to attrition by recruiting class? Always interesting to see who lasts a year, two years, three . . . Would imagine the portal has turned all of that upside down. Thanks.

Jonathon Haynes is back, he's on the official roster and was on the early 2 deep chart.

I believe Antoine Whitner transferred to PU.
I removed Haynes from the Graduated list. I was fully prepared to blame The Daily Hoosier but looks like it was my error. 😂 I didn't see Whitner on Purdue's roster.

Edit: The 2021 roster has Haynes listed as Grad+ - I thought the plus applied to the current year not the next year? I'm too lazy to upload the screenshot somewhere so I can attach it below -_-

If memory serves, Whitner made their two deep and played the first half of the season but I believe he was injured and didn't play the last half. What happened after that I don't know.

Boiler N may stop by with some info.

I think you're mixing up Whitner with Damarjhe Lewis (who recently trashed his ankle and is done for the year)... Not sure where Whitner has gone to but Lewis is at p u... Thought I read something about his having a cousin there but could be wrong on that one...

Darn! you beat me to it. I just scanned the PU roster and, yes, I was thinking of Lewis. A quick check of Google gives nothing on Whitner.

I think fans are tired of trying to justify why we won’t make a bowl. This bag of prebuilt excuses is there every season in some form or another. Other schools experience the same challenges.
In your 6th year, you don’t go backwards. The guys who left, the vast majority are moving to much smaller programs. How many regularly played? Maybe a handful. This wasn’t (except graduation) a mass exodus of our key players.

Hoosier Huddle told me "he decided to come back" this year, meaning last year wasn't the plus year this year is. There should be a way to differentiate a future plus year vs a current plus year. It could mean either I guess unless again I'm missing something lol.

It was not a mass exodus of key players as you point out.

After two great seasons followed by that thing we saw last season, 2022 will be the seminal season for the CTA tenure. TA has eluded to this himself recently.

Sept 2 cannot come soon enough.

I fully agree. It’s really bowl or bust. I don’t think another losing season ( would be his 4th in 6 years) will give reason to hold out much hope for his future.

That seems like too high of a bar after last season and all of the tumult and turnover that has followed. Four wins, with all of the roster and coaching changes, would be a pretty good year.

When it comes to departures, I really only look in the trenches, as that is the key to the program's development in the B1G. Kept the list to only scholarship players. Hopefully the staff can limit the amount of "misses" in this area when recruiting HS/JUCO/Transfer Portal.

Aside from Micah McFadden, Ryder Anderson, and Peyton Hendershot..., none of the guys on those lists (graduates, transfers, and other) played anywhere close to a Big Ten level last Fall.

Anderson and Hendershot should be replaceable, with McFadden being the only guy who we'll Really miss (in my opinion)... He might be a "replace his production by committee" situation... The biggest concern there is, is there anyone on this current roster capable of filling his role as a Leader... Hopefully Cam Jones will be The Guy...

For the most part, aside from the 3 named above..., this is clearly an addition by subtraction situation..., which is why I believe we'll be better this Fall in nearly every category...

I feel the same way about the staff turnover...

Agree, although I think Bjorson was also valuable in a limited role.

On the whole, the number of guys the team is going to lose for next year due to exhausting eligibility is going to be harder to handle than this season. Mullen, Williams, C4, Sio, Bedford, Bryant (I think), Haggard, Layne (I think), maybe Monster? Unless the guys waiting in the wings are really ready to go, next season might be more of a rebuilding year in a way. This is a very experienced team they’re going to be putting on the field this year.

I am concerned about next year's team, but I will focus on this team hoping they have a great team.

Well, six wins would be great, especially if it means a trip to a nice venue. there are ways that a five win season can look like significant progress given the brutality of the schedule. Beat Ill, Idaho, WKU, PU, and one of Neb, MD. Rutger and Penn St and i think that looks like progress.

With the increased speed on the team, I beat IU wins more than 5 games and fans will feel excited. I forgot to add with our new coaches and coach Wilt and coach Allen calling defenses teams will have a hard time scoring.

Agree wholeheartedly and don’t let the Purdue fan pretending to be an IU fan back with his umpteenth handle tell you otherwise.

McFadden is in my opinion the only player from last years team whose combination of production + leadership can’t be replaced. I do think Cam Jones is capable of taking on that leadership role, and while I think he can be a high level player in his own right, matching McFadden’s production is a tough ask for any one player.

But as the OP illustrated, all but 2-3 of IU’s departures are addition by subtraction. Taylor’s departure could be felt if there are injuries to the regular starters at corner like last year, but nearly everyone who has left the program has transferred down a level, and for good reason.

If IU can get consistent QB play and avoid massive injuries to key guys at key positions which played a role in last seasons derailment, six sims isn’t out of the possibility, even with tough schedule.

Everyone considers their portal guys to be addition by subtraction. The fact is, however, nearly all of them transfer for one main reason - they’ve been passed over at their previous school. That’s basically the case for our incoming guys, and it was mostly the case for the outgoing ones (Penix and Taylor being the obvious exceptions). I get the A by S argument, but it’s mostly wishful and rarely based on any objective analysis.

Go Hoosiers.
Hardly, Shivers played behind real honed talent. So did 3 others. Differences are made by a single player making plays motivating the team. Subtraction by addition is the proper analysis until proven wrong. Enough talent on this team to jump the bar set last season. Optimism is called for.

Shivers couldn’t get on the field last year. He was passed over due to disciplinary, injury and competitive forces. He had 32 total touches. Doesn’t mean he’s a bad player at all, only that he left AU because he wasn’t playing as much as he wanted to. That’s true for just about everyone who left us, and everyone who left another school to instead come to IU.

Jumping last season’s bar of 2-10 / 0-9 shouldn’t be difficult. That’s more like jumping a notebook.

What discipline issues did Shivers have? To my knowledge, he never missed any games for disciplinary reasons.

The damn headline says "updates injury status of Running back Shaun Shivers and....

It's basically the same article, written the same day as the one you posted.

You're wrong on this one.
He was away from the team for two games for a non disclosed reason. The rumors at the Auburn site were that it was an issue with Harsin. I’ll tap out.
