This is a crazy story. If this goes through, teams literally have zero leverage with players.
Does it have to be a formal transfer? Can’t a player simply withdraw from classes and say they don’t like the school? Does that keep you from receiving a scholarship at the next school? What I’m getting at, is it more than just “it looks bad”?

That's basically what he did. He tried to enter the portal, Wisconsin wouldn't let him so he withdrew from classes and enrolled at Miami.
 
This is simply the step between “officially” entering the portal and being able to transfer and play mid season. We could’ve bought a couple big ass linemen right before the ND game.
 
I would think UW would be able to sue Mr. Lucas for breach on contract. Maybe they did, or schools will, have non-compete clauses.

Schools would have to admit that kids were employees then, which they won't do. From my understanding, he signed something but hadn't received any money on it because it was for next season, which the time frame of the contract hadn't started yet.

Wisconsin is gonna lose here.
