How does the decision of one man represent humanity’s collective intelligence?
Good grief. You do understand that correspondents are assigned to this, right? It’s a career enhancer.
It lets us know who the lowest seniority reporters are. I mute the sound & gauge the storm by how many degrees the reporter is leaning — 30, 45, 60, and gone.
Flashback for me. I was in St. Pete when Hurricane Camille (Cat5) hit Mississippi in '69. We were not in the direct line of fire but had to evacuate anyway. Palm trees & electrical wires were down and the cops could not get the surfers out of the water. Usually there's not enough waves to surf but we had six and eight foot breakers coming in. We didn't stop driving until we got into northern Georgia.

Strongest in the instrumented period to hit the US. I remember reading about a wind gauge that showed 186 mph just before it broke.

Everyone is being forced to evacuate and it is too dangerous to be out here, However, I am the most recent hire, low man on the seniority totem pole, disposable and easiest to replace.
I was in a good blow from a hurricane one time. It was supposed to hit our location at about 1:00 am. I told my wife I am going to get up and go outside to experience it. All windows boarded. Around 1 the wind wakes me up and the wife and I go to the front door and open and it is mayhem outside. I told my wife-jeez I ain’t going out in this and closed the door.
