Strongest in the instrumented period to hit the US. I remember reading about a wind gauge that showed 186 mph just before it broke.Flashback for me. I was in St. Pete when Hurricane Camille (Cat5) hit Mississippi in '69. We were not in the direct line of fire but had to evacuate anyway. Palm trees & electrical wires were down and the cops could not get the surfers out of the water. Usually there's not enough waves to surf but we had six and eight foot breakers coming in. We didn't stop driving until we got into northern Georgia.
