Never liked Goldwater... but

Reissuing the Goldwater info and thoughts here:

It's "the Godfather of Conservatism" who said :

"I am a conservative Republican, but I believe in democracy and the separation of church and state.

The conservative movement is founded on the simple tenet that people have the right to live life as they please as long as they don't hurt anyone else in the process." (in a 1994 Washington Post essay)

"The religious factions will go on imposing their will on others,"

"I don't have any respect for the Religious Right."

"Every good Christian should line up and kick Jerry Falwell's ass."

"A woman has a right to an abortion."
"A lot of so-called conservatives don't know what the word means. They think I've turned liberal because I believe a woman has a right to an abortion. That's a decision that's up to the pregnant woman, not up to the pope or some do-gooders or the Religious Right." - Barry Goldwater

Goldwater Was Outspoken, Untamable | WaPo

I'm completely opposed to selling automatic rifles. I don't see any reason why they ever made semiautomatics. I've been a member of the NRA; I collect, make and shoot guns. I've never used an automatic or semiautomatic for hunting. There's no need to. They have no place in anybody's arsenal. If any SOB can't hit a deer with one shot, then he ought to quit shooting. – Barry Goldwater

But the current Christian right was not to Goldwater's liking. He had no use for its doctrinaire style. In the end, he was a libertarian, for abortion rights, for gay rights – a Goldwater grandson is homosexual.

If this was the conservative party today (Goldwater conservative), they would own our country's governance. Instead, they have marginalized themselves and are making their place incompatible with the future. Appealing to a smaller and smaller audience.

Without racism on their side, they'd be reduced to insignificance in today's body politic already.

...and the right wants to keep going down that road apparently. They'll end up not only being unable to win the presidency, but they'll also end up losing congress. May not right away, but it's in the near future, they'll lose seats this next election.

Just think when they introduce computerized, getting rid of gerrymandered, voting districts. More loss for the right.

The writing is on the wall and you all are ignoring it.

Thank you for being so smart.
Thank you for informing us folk of our stupid.
Thank God for creating you to help us.
You win.

pro-choice

In the bible life does not begin until outside the mother and the then baby receives the "breath of life".

Also in the bible, someone strikes another man's wife and causes her to lose the baby, aborting it. The man was fined and sent on his way. They even mention how it is the status of the husband that determines the amount of the fine.

For all intents, a woman is just chattel in the bible.

So...

The bible is pro-choice. Perhaps what you need to do is perform a human sacrifice, those are talked about being done in the bible, beastie sacrifices as well.

Hey did you ever explain how Unicorns got in the bible?
I disagree. John the Baptist while in his mother's womb had the Holy Spirit upon him. He rejoiced in the womb as Mary met Martha. David says in Psalm 139 that he was knit while in his mother's womb, and that he was fearfully and wonderfully made.

You're on the right track, but still off by a bit. The Babylonian captivity is a major part of how God is portrayed in the Bible, but it's not that he was modeled off of Babylonians. Rather, the Jews had to come up with an explanation for why their country had been destroyed, so that's how God got his vengeance and fetish for making his children suffer, and that's why the entire history of the Jews is replete with them turning their backs on God at the slightest provocation.
Don't forget that the prophet Jeremiah prophesied that they would only be in Babylon for 70 yrs and then would return to their homeland. The Babylonian Captivity is only God holding them to the covenant he made with them in Moses' day. The deal was serve me and I will bless you and the land. Deny me and you can't live in this land. Now God didn't kick them out right away. It took 100s of yrs for his wrath to say, "that is enough". Even though they sinned many centuries, God only made them stay in Babylon for 70 yrs. This shows that God is very gracious and compassionate. In Babylon many of the Jews repented and it was glorious to see how through the decree of Cyrus 539bc they were able to return.

Fairy tale

SPIRIT...they NEVER refer to them as living being. Not once, anywhere in the bible. It is only after receiving the "breath of life" that they are deemed a living human.

The Republican party made a deal with the devil years ago to get the southern states. . They sold out to corporate america, the religious right, and the NRA. Now they will reap what they sowed. That's getting Donald Trump as your front runner possibly the most inept person ever to lead in polling at this stage. It just goes to show what kind of a person who is drawn to the party. It is not pretty.

I am not ignoring it and if that is what you see in my posts you are a blind liberal.

I have tried in the past to have discussions with you and explain things to you that you don't know very much about. You have too high of an opinion of yourself. You think you are the smartest person here about every single topic. There are some topics you probably are the smartest person on. On other topics, you are woefully and obviously uninformed. But you aren't capable of learning from others. So I stopped trying to have conversations with you. And I'm not going to start back up again.

I only responded to you in this thread, because I don't like you, and I wanted to tell you to F off.

Goat trying to explain to someone that they don't know everything? Pot meet facking kettle man. You are the king of know it all.

LOL if only I could be the man you are, Goat. I may know enough to draw unemployment and try and sound smart on the interwebz.

Evidently not enough...

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” ― Mahatma Gandhi

If they want to honor the life o Jesus this is the bible they ought to be using: Jefferson Bible It only contains the story of his life. Which is what the christian right ignores and instead concentrates on the words of others before the life of Jesus. imho

Just remember, the christians I'm knocking aren't about how Jesus lived his life. It's about using the bible as a lever for them to guide people to their political ideas. Hardly Jesus.

Why are you replying to me with that crap?

I dont give a phunk what you think. Go crawl back into the whole that birthed you so that someone can abort you...

This post is exactly what Goldwater was worried about. We are a nation of laws, the laws of men, not the laws of God. Goldwater was pro-choice, not because of any personal opinion he had about abortion, but because he believed that it should be up to the pregnant woman to decide what was best for her. He was a libertarian, essentially.

If you refuse to compromise on certain issues because of your religion, and you want the government to enforce your views, you are neither a libertarian nor a conservative; you are a Christian fascist.
You're the kind of guy who would be for slavery because it was the,"law of the land". Sometimes laws are unjust and need to be changed. What is best for the woman is immaterial if the baby inside of her is a person. If it is then this child has the same rights as you and me. As Americans we have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The baby can't speak for itself but I sure will, "I don't want to die" is what the baby says.

Your slavery comment is stupid and proves you don't have the least idea what I am talking about. Or you're just an asshole.

A fetus isn't a person, legally. Never has been. Ever. Even the ancient rabbis, who opposed abortion on the grounds a fetus was made in the image of God, still recognized someone was not a person until they were born. That is why they allowed abortions if the mother was in danger.

Sound like an irrational psychopath to me. Worship me or I'll torture you.. what a jerk.

Run over and kill a pregnant woman.

See if you charged with one death or two.

I wish....

This right here is the difference between eastern and western culture and the way it views knowledge. The west and it's main religion view knowledge as somehow wrong, while the east and it's main religion appreciates it. The goal of western religions is ignorance, (leap of faith) while the goal of Eastern religions (complete enlightenment) is knowledge of everything. And, though neither Phish, nor I are religious, the cultural norms have seeped into our perspectives. I appreciate knowledge, Phish appreciates ignorance. He is so very American in his perspective. I credit my Mother, and blame his ..

You'll be charged with two deaths in most states (38, I think), but that's not because a fetus enjoys full legal personhood. If it did, you'd be charged with both deaths in all states, and we wouldn't need separate feticide laws to make it happen.

The Holy Spirit was inside of John the Baptist while he was in his mother's womb. This is my point.

...and he was also outside the womb, a living breathing being.

You fail to understand the book you use.

You want to preach Jesus life, use Jefferson's book, you want to preach the bullshit that lets you tell people how to live from your political views, not only are you a failed christian far from the path of Christ, but you're an idiot as well. (which I already knew from the IndyStar forums).

You need to leave your vocation, you are corrupting its teachings.

What is best for the woman is immaterial? So, from that, I take it that you believe women are only put on this earth to be brood mares?
The baby has rights, men have rights, but the women has none. I get it. Chattel.

Not that you whiny bitches are capable of staying on subject, but Barry won me over. I was raised a true liberal at IU, and wore me freak flag proudly when I went to U of AZ to get my masters in 1979. When I graduated, I moved to Phoenix, so I got to know the Goldwater estate like everyone else in town. Not ostentatious, but a view that was killer. What BG had that no one else did was a radio tower on his property that he let his constituents use to talk to their kids in Vietnam. He used his own $ for that, not just something that he claimed credit for while we all paid for it. I changed my mind about Barry once I knew that.
Of course that is also around the time that I quit smoking pot, so maybe the fog was lifted.
