Movies, books, tv

Yeesh where to start.

Succession was so great because it was so close to the current cable news environment.

House of the Dragon was spectacular, if you liked Game of Thrones. It was so good that it was able to wipe away the cynicism of how Thones ended and revitalize the franchise. That's what happens when the source material is 100% George RRRrrrrr.

White Lotus is a quick watch as it's just two seasons right now. It's a well put together comedy mystery.

Barry is a technical masterpiece. It's like if Scorsese and the Cohen brothers did a project together. Very dark but very funny.

I'd start with Succession, HOTD, Barry and White Lotus. Start with Succession and The White Lotus if watching with your wife.

Not sure if The Leftovers, The Wire, Season one of Westworld (another where the source material is gold), Mare of Easttown, The Outsider are still available.

Plus it's fun to just pull up a random Curb Your Enthusiasms when you want a quick, funny 30 minute punch.
We like episodic stuff, not long drawn out story arcs. Simple stuff for simple minds.

Tell me about it.
Omfg each episode is short and stand alone. It’s topical following this guy in ny: John Wilson. One episode might be about how to split a check. Or how to cover furniture. It’s a documentary comedy. It’s brilliant. And uplifting. Many episodes. It’s a brilliant show

She's got it. Recommendations?
Knock knock.

Have I had a chance to talk to you about The Leftovers?

Everything good HBO has made is on there I believe.

I'm definitely going to check it out now. Thanks my brother!!

Probably Season 1 of White Lotus or Barry. Barry are 30 minute episodes and season 1 is more dark humor vs just being dark like season 3 and 4.

Season one of White Lotus is pretty funny on its own per episode but it has a season arc. Season two is great also but it's not as quirky/funny. Season 2 is more serious in tone.

Going off the gf factor...she LOVES and was instantly hooked on White Lotus. She also loves Succession but it took about half of season one.

She has no interest in HOTD, Leftovers, Season 1 Westworld or Barry once it got darker (but did kind of enjoy season one, particularly Stephen Root as Fuchs) which is weird because she's a complete murder show junkie.

The Staircase (both the documentary and the HBO movie) hooked her quickly. Plus I don't want to doxx myself but my sister had a decent role in The Staircase. Gotta give her props for making a career out of background characters but she's gotten to do scenes with Kate Winslet, Laura Linney and now Toni Collette. Not too shabby!

WTF is Painting With John on HBO? Just turned it on and I am completely befuddled. It’s like a manic depressive Bob Ross off his meds and shrooming. It reminds me of a documentary version of Naked Lunch.

I only have HBOMax for a few more weeks. Recommendations?
The leftovers
HOTD
GOT
Succession
Curious case of natalia grace
Chernobyl
Mare of east town
True detective seasons 1 or 3
Station Eleven

You’ve probably seen many but you get the idea

Go ahead and queue up "The Curious Case of Natalia Grace" on MAX. I'd forgotten all about this. Damn, Westfield. These weirdos AND Herb Baumeister? Calm down.

Edit: Wow that got dark.

Edit 2: Finished the first three eps. Holy moly. These might well and truly be the worst people on the planet.
Holy shit! That was insane and those people are wackadoodles! Thanks for the recommendation. I love documentaries and I kind of have a thing for little people too, so this was right up my alley. Can’t believe I don’t remember the case.

Grandkids? Or else I've totally mistaken you as about 55-60 for a few years now (at least you'll never age in my mind Zeke).

Never be the best player on your team and you'll become the best player you can be (ancient chinese proverb)

But honestly, hold off on the travel bullshit for a couple more years at least. A ball and a wall will do her more good than any U7 travel team could.
Yep, grands. She scored 12 goals today, lol. They switched her to the other team at half, but there wasn’t anyone to sub for her, since some kids were out. She’s got an allstar type thing coming up end of summer. Will be interesting to see what they do, as they just bought a lake place and aren’t going to want to travel every weekend when she gets older. Oh and she was playing against all boys part of the time. The older isn’t competitive, but this one is.
Side note: the 9 year old is going to Taylor Swift tomorrow in Chicago. Has your daughter hit you up for that, Mcmurty?

Watched the 3 part documentary on catching Jared Fogle on Max. The journalist from Sarasota made it all about her.
Can we go ahead and change the Zionsville mascot to Predators?

Lol I figured. We got them in the midst of the Ticketmaster mess when they first came out. It’s quite a phenomenon. Little girls to old folks like her. My college girls are mostly going. Even saw Aaron Rogers last week. You’d be Dad of the Year.

My daughter is going tomorrow. Sat next to a woman on a plane this last week from NYC flying in to see the Friday show. Said she's the same age as Taylor and is her biggest fan. I found it . . . odd. She had many opinions about Matty Healy and that no-good manipulator, John Mayer.

As for movies, if anyone has kids or loves comic books, the new Spiderman: Across the Spider-verse is superb. The animation is as good as the first one and I liked the story. In fact, I think this and the last one are the perfect way to do the whole substituting POC for white people thing. They don't harp on it, instead they just cast different, minority groups and go along and tell a story without preaching. Very well done. I think my son likes Miles Morales more than Peter Parker and I don't blame him; I might, too (and Spider-Man was always my favorite comic growing up).

Watched the first episode of White Lotus. Please tell me it gets better. It has to. Even if you say so, I'm not sure I can get the Boss to watch another one...

Hmmm I'm kind of surprised the boss also didn't like it. Obviously you started with season 1 (the head of the hotel is a dude and I think it's in Hawaii . Season two is in Italy/Sicily and the head of the Lotus is a chick).

Season two takes awhile to get going but season one for us was a quick grab.

My bad. It won like a billion Emmys and was the trendy show of the time.

'HBO's “The White Lotus” was the most-winning show of the night, receiving five awards during the night including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and 10 total awards when combined with the Creative Arts Emmys.Sep 28, 2022'

Plus I've always loved Steve Zahn's humor. He was classic Zahn in the White Lotus.

I did forget to warn that there is a shocking thing in about every episode, like when Zahn is worried he found a lump in his balls and the camera cuts right to his nuts. It's kindof Borat like in that manner.

How to with John Wilson
Watched the first episode the other night (based on your recommendation) and it was pretty good. The stuff at the MTV spring break party in Cancun was hilarious - especially the part where MTV was freaking out because he was always looking the wrong way and obviously appeared out of place.

He was ruining their shots 🤣. Hilarious. It’s a light easy, entertaining watch
