I think much of your Ted criticisms can be answered by "it was never about me", which I think was the perfect closure. Ted getting emotional would have made it about him. Plus, I think he had achieved peace in his decision.

I loved the Geronimo picture, though honestly I was hoping for Norm in the background of the bar drinking a beer.

I think there will be a spinoff. They created possible lines. One could be about the bar and it's patrons, a nod to Cheers which was a nod to Fawlty Towers. Another would be the new women's soccer team. And of course the Roy Kent led Richmond.
Agreed. But I don’t see it working without Ted

Here is a question, why do so many soccer teams use "football club" in their name. I don't see "Cincinnati Reds Baseball Team" or "Cincinnati Bengals Football Team" or Indiana Pacers Basketball Team" ever mentioned, but so many of these soccer teams have FC in their official name and marketing. Are there other Tottenham Hotspurs that they need differentiated from?

Long story short, many were part of larger athletic unions (remember those) or orther organizations which had cricket, horseracing, boxing, tennis, golf. you name it. Like the football team in Charlton is named Charlton Athletic FC. But this was probably b/c they were trying to appear more than what they were. Also tons were named after businesses or were run completely by the businesses themselves.

So, you know, they had to be identified. Also, I think the English had a thing for sports beings "clubs" back in the mid to late 1800's.

My take anyway.

I know you're a fan of history. There's a pretty fun little show called The English Game which does a good job of introducing us to what soccer looked like oh so long ago (hint, way more like rugby without the hands part).

So many possibilities for spinoffs. I wonder if they set the stage for one or more, but as of now have no idea if there will be any. But, then there's this:

What? Even in the thread on the Indy 11, Cincinnati FC is mentioned. I don't get why the FC is so a part of the name.
Um, it's FC Cincinnati - not Cincinnati FC. ;) FWIW, the actual formal name of the club is Fußball Club Cincinnati (a nod to the city's German heritage). But no one ever uses that name (or Football Club Cincinnati). It's always either FC Cincinnati or FCC. Personally, I would have preferred a mascot/nickname instead, such as Cincinnati Chilis or Cincinnati Rivermen.

And what's with St. Louis? Their name is apparently written as St. Louis CITY SC (CITY in all caps).

It is odd that so many MLS teams have adopted naming conventions from overseas rather than follow the traditional American sports team naming of {City/State} {Mascot/Nickname}. Of the 29 current MLS teams, only 11 have a mascot/nickname as part of their team name (and four of those tack on "FC" at the end). The others all use one of:

United
Union
FC (or Football Club)
Sporting
Inter
SC
City
Real

So CITY was actually kind of a brilliant marketing move here because “the city” of Stl doesn’t have a county. One of only two major metros. So City is kind of an identifier on numerous fronts locally here. It’s sort of an homage to the people here who live in “the city.” Because I was in the group that wanted it built in the county. In chesterfield. But it’s exploded in the city with so much pride and attendant development. I was wrong. Our CITY

I liked mrs Maisel a lot, particularly the ancillary characters. Then somewhere along the way maisel became annoying to me and I stopped liking it as much. Not sure what it was about her. Haven’t checked out the new season

Same here. They got away from the show business stuff and spent so much time on the parents and inlaws, waaay over the top Jewish shit.

I’ll share another thing about Stl CITY Sc that’s kind of interesting. The US team that beat England in 1950 was mostly guys from the hill in the city of Stl. They were actually an old club here called kutis which was a funeral home. So now that we have CITY all those gingerbread and shotgun houses fly Stl CITY sc flags in the city.

In the last few decades soccer has exploded here in the burbs with zero club representation in the city. It’s become crazy political. Elitist. Money making machine. And there’s tons of resentment. Soccer snobbery with clubs. Bringing this BACK to the city felt good. Like a counter to the elitist suburban sport it’s become.

Now prices for tix and concessions belie that idea but still. Soccer in America is very different than the rest of the world as a pay to play rich kid sport

My kid has only played soccer beyond like 6 y/o. Aren't all US youth sports pretty much pay to play now? At least if you want to get to the mid/high comp levels?

Do basketball players get schollies to do AAU?

I assume based on the people I know, that baseball is very similar to soccer (and even whiter).

Football is all local but I have no idea if there are travel teams that are pay to play.

The more I think about it, youth sports has followed the model of nearly everything in the USA, pay to play. Capitalism baby. We have to take the bad with teh good.

I really don’t know. When I grew up playing for Busch there was one team per age group. You went to tryouts and either made it or were cut and the sponsor actually was a sponsor. It was free. Now you can have as many as 20 teams per age group. All writing checks from $1,000 to $15,000. They have scholarships but it’s token more than anything. And they don’t play or practice anywhere near a poor neighborhood

As an aside my boy has his first session later this month. He’s barely two. And as god as my witness can dribble like a mfer. I’m ready to be Mr marinovich

My daughter's coach has a couple younger kids (5,8). Both are incredible. And not just the techincal stuff but understanding how to shield the ball (instinctively almost), read passing lanes, triangles, etc. Nobody was like that when i was younger.

One more generation man. One more. WC confirmed.

My daughter's first rec soccer team was coached by a former EPL player (Jon Pickup* - Blackburn Rovers). We were a bit worried when we found out who was coaching. But it turned out to be a great experience. His daughter was on the team and he simply wanted all the girls to have a fun introduction to the sport. Later, our daughter briefly played on a "select" team and was pretty good for her age. After a year of that she decided to stick with gymnastics instead (but recently complained to my wife that we "let her quit soccer" - go figure). There's no way she could have done both, particularly given the year-round time commitment required by gymnastics.

*Apparently, Pickup played for the Indiana Blast back in the late 90s: https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/6148939.blasts-past/

My son has a nickname. I’ve had it added to the back of all of his practice jerseys. Branding is critically important.

My daughter says the same. “We took her out of whatever” lol. Literally the worst athlete I have ever seen anywhere

How about that opening scene?!? That was pretty funny, and I can imagine tons of people cheering when Ted comes out, only to have their dreams dashed moments later. LOL Pure evil genius.
I didn’t want them to get together at all. I know some people did, but I never saw signs they had that type of relationship. Pretty clever opening though.

Our two little girls play soccer. Oldest is pretty good but youngest is really good. Daddy is coach, played soccer and big fan ( Liverpool). Will be interesting to see if they stick with it. She’s only 5, but a whirlwind out there. Dad took her out a couple games as she was pretty much scoring at will.

Yep. I'm not sure why people thought they would. I mean, neither of them ever hinted at being attracted to the other apart from being friends. Maybe one of the points the writers were trying to make is that a man and woman can be close friends without ever leading to more than just a close friendship.

Grandkids? Or else I've totally mistaken you as about 55-60 for a few years now (at least you'll never age in my mind Zeke).

Never be the best player on your team and you'll become the best player you can be (ancient chinese proverb)

But honestly, hold off on the travel bullshit for a couple more years at least. A ball and a wall will do her more good than any U7 travel team could.

I’m ready for my son to start travel now. I have multiple birth certificates made for him. For down the road

It's called "re-aging", according to the Curious Case of Natalia Grace.

And yes, it can be beneficial if you're looking to make moves.

Oh this is helpful. Re-aging. The nomenclature for this shit is probably growing. When Freddy Adu did it, who still claims to be in his early 30s, it was just faking a birth certificate. When he was “discovered” at 14 I’m sure some naia coach somewhere bust out laughing: Freddy Adu? Bwahahaha. That’s Musa.

I can't imagine Apple turning down such a cash cow for them.

Glad that they let the original be a short, three season series vs what we typically do....drag it along.

Now they can still continue the characters and still have the Lasso series be its own.

I know it came from Ted Lasso, but can we get the soccer talk out of this thread?
I’ll get it back on track. I finished Barry, Ted lasso, and succession this past week. Time to take a little tv break. That said we are still in the throes of an unbelievable run of great tv. Succession was super entertaining this season.

Is it "Son of McMurtry" (or something along those lines)?

Reminds me of another underrated fish out of water comedy starring Sudeikis....Son of Zorn.

(I'm not able to post any links or pics for some reason. All the options are grayed out).

Anyway it's premise is Zorn is basically the animated He Man who was married to a girl in LA and they got divorced.

Zorn decides to move to LA to be closer to his son and struggles to adapt.

My girlfriend thought it was beyond stupid, but I loved it because I'm a dumb, rock eater.

Me and the Boss have been watching Silent Witness (BBC show on Britbox) for years. We watch other stuff, but it's the go-to when we just want to watch something familiar that requires little investment (each story is two episodes long).

We just finished season 25 last night. No more available at this time. I don't know what we're going to do.

Get hbo max. So much on it right now. Now that lasso is over I’m going to dump Apple TV. And Disney.

She's got it. Recommendations?
Yeesh where to start.

Succession was so great because it was so close to the current cable news environment.

House of the Dragon was spectacular, if you liked Game of Thrones. It was so good that it was able to wipe away the cynicism of how Thones ended and revitalize the franchise. That's what happens when the source material is 100% George RRRrrrrr.

White Lotus is a quick watch as it's just two seasons right now. It's a well put together comedy mystery.

Barry is a technical masterpiece. It's like if Scorsese and the Cohen brothers did a project together. Very dark but very funny.

I'd start with Succession, HOTD, Barry and White Lotus. Start with Succession and The White Lotus if watching with your wife.

Not sure if The Leftovers, The Wire, Season one of Westworld (another where the source material is gold), Mare of Easttown, The Outsider are still available.

Plus it's fun to just pull up a random Curb Your Enthusiasms when you want a quick, funny 30 minute punch.
