We are searching for another coach.

What are the top 3 things that you think a coach wants when considering the job? Everyone will have compensation in their top 3, but I’m curious what other 2 things you think are paramount?

#3 is why Louisville and Kentucky hired mid-major coaches, and possibly why we will too.

Big name coaches don’t typically hop around in college ranks.
Guys like Beard, May are guys that will rise to bigger jobs but the Steven’s, Wrights, Self,’s of the world arent leaving jobs

You don't get the first 2 if you have #3. That's just goofy, all these guys know the score: if you're top 5-10 in salary and NIL, you're going to have high expectations. The only other way is to go to a lesser program and build it. IU has the top 2, and great support, the best league affiliation, reasonable admission standards and history and facilities. I doubt that means we'll fare any better with the very top level candidates (Stevens, Oats, Pearl, etc...) than UL or UK did last year, because those guys have it rolling now where they are. But, it seems both fanbases are happy with their choices so if our admin does their homework I think we will be too. The worst thing we could do is lock in early on a particular candidate (like May) and not research and interview a full slate of candidates.

Some of these SEC teams that are football teams pay like elite bball teams. Pearl at Auburn is a good example

Correct, and they have moderate expectations compared to IU and UK fans. There's a reason why Dusty rejected Louisville and may reject IU.

But why? Do you think some places, like coaching at a blue blood program, might be more stressful than their current position? Lots of guys don't want to coach in a fishbowl.

Thanks, looks like you listed 7 things. 😉

Plus it’s a better basketball conference. BIG basketball is pretty bad in last 20’years

haven't seen Self on the Illini bench for a while whatever happened to him?

I’d add the area talent pool. Indiana is lucky to have so many good kids in state.

Supportive fan base should be in there too. Some places just don’t care as much as Indiana fans.

I was really replying to Pryghts comments about moderate expectations. If I had to rank, I believe it would be: 1) salary, 2)NIL and 3) conference affiliation. Not only is the B10 1 of the top 2 conferences and I believe the top revenue producer for bball, but it's also got a more favorable situation with the top of the conference in coaches. The SEC is a meat grinder, while the B10 is basically Painter and Izzo at the top, with lots of good coaches after that. That gives you a much better shot at conference championships and high seeds year in/year out.

Ding ding. I didn’t think anyone would have support system in their top 3. Thanks, and I agree.
An elite level candidate WILL come in with his own ideas, methods, etc... on how to run a successful program. Feeling comfortable that he'll be supported, encouraged, and allowed to do all those things...might actually be the number 1 on most guys list.

Our fanbase is supportive only if you’re both contending for the league title and get past the S16 every year. I wonder if our fanbase is actually a liability.

What is intriguing is the blue blood hires the last few years havent been big names.
UNC-Hubert Davis
Duke- John Scheyer
UK- Mark Pope
Villanova- Kyle Neptune
UConn- Hurley

None of these guys were big name hires and all of them except Hurley had some type of connection to the school that hired them. To me this seems like a May or Beard hire for Iu.

I think you exaggerate. We've been so, so, far from that for the past 10 years that most fans would be quite happy with games that were not embarrassing blowout losses, respectable standing in the conference, not discussing if we were completely out of the tournament or possibly squeaking into a play-in round, etc. League titles and low tournament seeds are a goal but if we are making clear progress towards those things I think most fans will be happy. At least for a while.

In basketball, would you say that Alabama fans have moderate expectations compared to IU fans?
Yep and the same amount of money as well! Sec coach isn’t coming to the BIG.
Sec is better league
Can make same money there
Same NIL
Better weather
Less focus on basketball an more on football from fans

Not even close to true. We haven't been that level in forever and the fan support has been very good.

It's softer now, so change your comment to 'fans expect to contend for sweet 16s and further, and league titles, once in awhile, instead of having no hope whatsoever for those things' and you may be right.

And yes, fans do expect if we get a great coach, we can regularly contend for both things. That's just reality, of the advantages at Indiana.

not anymore. I'd say they are expecting a 1 seed and a return to the F4. We're expecting no tournament and a new coach.

Let’s be honest…Bama basketball fans aren’t like IU basketball fans. They would closer to how IU football fans are. Loving the ride but know it could be short term because they are a “football school” or in IU case…a “basketball school”
