Movies, books, tv

I don't think it is great. Like Jack Ryan she has strong Mary Sue tendencies. Some of the politics requires a leap of faith and serious suspension of disbelief. So no, don't order Netflix for this show. It is more good than great, at least so far.

Agreegence. We're just two episodes in, and it's fun, but it's not going to be remembered as anything great.

For those that like military history, I just finished Luck of the Draw about a WW2 B17 navigator. he flew in the 100th, called the "Bloody hundredth". This a source material for the Hanks/Spielberg series, and the author is a character.

First, the author had brushes with other great WW2 movies. His B17 had a guest pilot for its Schweinfurt/Regensburg mission, the guy who would write 12 O'Clock High. The author's plane was shot down over Munster where he was captured and sent to Lift Stalag 3. That is where the Brits staged the Great Escape.

His book is well done, clearly written with passion. If the era interests you, I recommend it. One non-military item of interest, he said the POWs often spoke of their favorite foods. He suggests that being from Atlanta he had no idea what this food was the New Yorkers and Bostonians talked about, something called pizza pie.

I’m two episodes in and agree. I really like her character. They work hard to give her some relatable traits, like not wanting the Cinderella theme, taking off her shoes, etc. Oh and her hubby isn’t bad to look at either.

I'm unlikely to order Netflix just for one show, but I listened to an interview with the showrunner on NPR yesterday, and they played several clips of dialogue. I was not impressed. Everything she said sounded tortured, heavy-handed, and overwrought. Just bad clip selection?
Some people have a face for radio, and some have dialogue for the screen.

If you're into the civil war, I would suggest the movie The Conspirator. It's about the only woman tried for her involvement in the Lincoln assassination. It came out around 2010.

Anybody read Road of Bones?

Hint: Stephen King endorsed it.

Highly imaginative, and well-written. But it's out there.

Sounds pretty awesome. Have you ever tackled House of Leaves?

Talk about out there. It should 100% be given the HBO treatment.

I have not.

This book was lying on a table just outside my normal aisle, regarding mystery and crime. So I picked it up along with another book of its genre, Terror. Gonna start and finish Terror first, then read the new Bosch book, then I can find House of Leaves.

BTW, Road of Bones was a slow reading 228 pages. I just didn't have the motivation to read it . . . . I guess shadow wolves and antlered people will do that . . . .

That’s how they get you.

Yep. They got me.

And that's the last money I'll spend at B&N. Not only because of that . . . but the book had a 50% off sticker on it if you bought another book . . . "Buy one, get one 50% off" . . . and when I asked about it at the register I was told it applied only if the other book also had the 50% off sticker on it.

BTW, Lars' book is expensive . . . and that's on Amazon . . . .

Yes, I'm a cheap bastage . . . .

It does seem stupidly tough to find. I suspect there's a ton of behind the scenes contracts, etc. preventing its printing by another publisher. But who knows.

But then again, I don't think anybody wants to print it. If you ever find a copy at a bookstore, flip through it. The book's design is part of the confusion (in a sense).

:(

:) But . . .

Give it a go. You may like it. You may hate it. There are somewhere between 2-7 distinct stories going on at one time. Some intersect. Some dont.

If you read and liked The Cloud Atlas, you'll probably enjoy it.

Edit: I mean how can not read this?

Had The Blair Witch Project been a book instead of a film, and had it been written by, say, Nabokov at his most playful, revised by Stephen King at his most cerebral, and typeset by the futurist editors of Blast at their most avant-garde, the result might have been something like House of Leaves. Mark Z. Danielewski's first novel has a lot going on: notably the discovery of a pseudoacademic monograph called The Navidson Record, written by a blind man named Zampanò, about a nonexistent documentary film--which itself is about a photojournalist who finds a house that has supernatural, surreal qualities.

Haven't read The Cloud Atlas. I lack culture.

Right now I'm going back and forth between Lions of Medina about Charlie Co 1/1 Marines in October 1967 and Vietnam a history by Stanley Kurnow.

Going to start WACO:The Aftermath tv series.

Finished Perry Mason season 2 tonight. Pretty solid. It was a two episode binge, and episode 7 is the one where you solve the mystery, and episode 8 is just cleanup. But the solve was a fun ride. They made it obvious what the answer was, and then maybe ten or fifteen minutes later, they made it explicit, which was a gimmick, so the viewer gets to feel smart for about fifteen minutes for figuring it out. But, of course, it was misdirection, and then when you figure out where the twist is going, they only give you a brief moment before they confirm it, so you don't get as much time to feel smart. Pretty standard cheesy mystery stuff.

That said, the season ended with a bang character-wise. The choice Mason makes to save the case is brilliant, and Della's arc shoots in an upward and yet very constraining direction. Overall, I would say it was a fitting follw-up to the first season, and I'm definitely looking forward to season 3.

Any play fans here? I’m in NYC celebrating my birthday. Seeing some of my many girls that live here and plays. I’ve got Funny Girl with Lea Michele. It’s not my favorite but she’s supposed to be a powerhouse in it. Also Parade with Ben Platt. Has anyone seen Six? Have time for one more. Going to the Met Friday. Any other suggestions for things to do during day? Weather isn’t great… should have come next week!

Six is terrific. Good choice with Parade. I saw Sweeney Todd last month and it's outstanding. Leopoldstadt by Tom Stoppard is excellent.

I hate those type of endings.
I like resolution. Leaving it open ended is one thing, but FFS...

The Diplomat's second season may be available to stream sooner than you think. According to Marie Claire, The Diplomat was originally announced in January 2022. Netflix released the series 15 months later, so if production runs smoothly, Season Two could be ready by next summer.

So should I watch this show or not? I'm leaving it up to you and Marv.

I'm excited about starting Lindelof's next series. You seen it?
No. I’m at terminal mass with content. Disc golf season is in full swing just as the EPL is ending. Still got champs league. F1 just underway (but already decided). NBA playoffs. Wife and I have to slog through the last season of WW.

And in summer I’ll be outside. No temptations. And I’m trying to read more Brad. I already rewatched Chernobyl for the third time last month.

It’s too much. Too much.

And I’m waiting on you. Let’s tighten up the communication channels.

I'm pissed about the cliffhanger ending, so I'm probably not the right guy to ask. It's a good show, but still...

The smart move would be to wait until Season 2 is released, then start with Season 1. Of course, there's no telling what they'll do with the end of Season 2.
